Bertholdt was always my favourite character. He always intrigued me because, although he didn't say much, every time he did talk it was amazing dialogue. I miss him..
I was never happy to see him die. Even though I didn't know the full story back then, I could tell he was a genuine person after he gave that speech in season 2 when everyone was on Reiner cornering him. Sad stuff

No opening, there's no OST and just silence all throughout up until the injection was given, and then it all ends with "Sayonara, world" in the ending. They really did a fantastic job conveying the atmosphere of the aftermath! The voice-acting was also fantastic! Kaji Yuki (Eren) and Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa) really gave it their all, especially Yui. The way she portrayed Mikasa this episode did not disappoint. Her crying out as she was held back by Hange was just heartbreaking. I also loved how Hange started off holding Mikasa back and then it gradually became a comforting hug 😢 Also loved Eren's dedication to Armin as well! In his last moments, Armin entrusted everything to Eren and Eren in turn, fought for Armin until the very end. The same with Levi with Erwin. It's why in the end, I couldn't really fault anyone for the way they acted during all of this. In the end, one of them was going to die and it was essentially "reasons why MY friend deserves to live more". Bertholdt's death screams was pretty sad and haunting for me. The way he cried out for his friends before realizing what was happening by how they were all staring back in horror and sadness, and then how he started calling out for Annie and Reiner...Despite everything he has done, it's still sad to see him die like that.
In the No Regrets OVA Erwin told Levi that once you start letting people make decisions for you then you should just give up. Or something to that effect. That’s why Levi knelt down and said “I’m making the decision. Give up on your dream and die” and that gave Erwin some relief. It allowed him to follow through with his charge. That’s why he thanked Levi for choosing for him. Maybe I misinterpreted all of that but I thought that was the main reason Levi chose Armin. The “thank you” from Erwin isn’t even shown until right before Levi uses the injection.
I was wondering about splitting the injenction too, but after reading some stuff I thinks it's two reasons: 1. They dont have the resources to kill another large titan if it gets out of control, plus it might destroy the basement on accident. 2. It was unsure if they split them up if either of them would turn, so they would risk losing both instead of saving one.

Her "plot hole" question was actually good. They should be able to divide the syringe liquid between the two choices. The flaw in the logic was that there's only one titan shifter to eat and probably too much trouble to try to secure Reiner to be the second meal at the time. Btw, I think it's believed that Rod Reiss was malformed because he had a back injury when he consumed the syringe fluid.
They know so little about the syringe liquid though. It was too much to risk. For all they know, splitting it between two people might have made both useless. Why put more of this precious liquid into one dose than is absolutely necessary, you know?
Yeah that's always been a big sticking point for me. Since they've also shown the amount of fluid you inject can also influence the size, so the full, standard dosage isn't required in order to make someone transform. It's technically possible for them to have injected both Armin and Erwin and just leave one of them as a pure titan for a later date (kinda like Conny's mom). But that raises a lot of logistical issues that could be weird to write around and either way I think most people won't think about all that during this very pivotal and emotional moment. Plus that would undercut the weight of this scene.
All the characters know, at this point, is what Rod and Kenny said, and what Eren and Historia witnessed, which is very little. I've seen so many different theories as to what happened to Rod, and unless it comes from a bona fide manga reader (assuming the manga gave a straight answer), I don't know what's correct. The characters know even less.
Both characters are amazing and the choice is certainly not easy. The point is the writing for Erwin's motivation and character arc is about finding the truth and reaching the basement. Once they get there its safe to say his character development ends. With Armin however his dream goes further beyond the walls and a basement. He wants to see the world and the sea. RIP Erwin.

Just like what you said, Armin is like mini Erwin already, he had proven a lot and we all witnessed that because we follow the story on their (main characters) perspective so its natural that we appreciate Armin's achievements more than Erwin's . But imagine, if Erwin was the one who was revived and inherited the Colossal titan with his great intelligence in both military and political aspects, his leadership, patriotism, confidence, bravery, judgement, influence, and great combat skills. How will the story turn out?
This episode along with the ending of Season 2 has the most insane voice acting in the show. (Also a scene in Season 4) Mostly due to Eren's VA giving immaculate emotional scenes

Lots of people tend to come up with this same idea. "Why didn't they split the injection and turn them both to titans?", right? Well yeah, theoretically they might be able turn them both but then what? Since they'd lost Reiner by then, only one of them could eat Bertholt and turn back to human, the other would have to stay a mindless titan, which arguably equals to or worse than death.
They had no idea if doing so would cause the injection to fail or not, but in the case of them doing that and restraining the new dumb titan, I'm pretty sure Erwin would gladly live as a dumb titan for a dozen years or so for the chance to learn what's in the basement (and even go over seas at that point), he'd def think it's worth it.
They were the number 1 and 2 rated episode of any TV show of all time for a while on IMDB, until Breaking Bad fans started hate reviewing it to get Breaking bad episodes back to the top.

Levi realized in that moment what Kenny's dying words meant and it gave him a new perspective: everyone is a slave to something, because everyone needs a reason to face the cruelty of the world and still keep pushing. He realized that whoever was going to lead the scouts needed to have a dream, to motivate him, to push him to fight. Erwin had practically achieved his dream at that point, his ultimate goal, which was to get to the basement and learn the truth about humanity and the titans. He was extremely close. After that Erwin would have had no more goals, once his life's mission was fulfilled, so he also would have no reason to keep pushing and endure the fight. Armin on the other hand had a different dream, he wanted to explore and discover the whole world outside of the walls. Armin was younger and his dream was far in the future. That and the fact that Erwin himself recognized Armin's potential and said of Armin that he was one of humanity's greatest weapons (or something along those lines), ultimately made Levi change his mind about who would be a greater asset for humanity. He also realized that letting go of his dream, letting another person (Levi) decide and finally surrendering to death, had removed a huge weight off of Erwin's shoulders, a weight that he had been careying for a long time. And Levi thought that the peace Erwin experienced in his final moments would be a good way for his friend to go out.

"Teacher... how do we know there's not more humans outside the walls" Erwins whole dream was to know if there were more humans outside the walls. The Basement was going to be his validation. When he was planning to capture the Female Titan, he could have gotten some validation there maybe... but Annie hardened. So he still couldn't get that 100% assurance. Then, just a while ago when the Beast Titan first appeared, and with all those others... at this point, Erwin knows for a fact that humans are in the mindless titan. Remember when he smiled about hearing that for the first time? Well that was because it was more evidence that humans are outside the walls. But, during this fight with the Beast, he knew his dream came true... There are defiantly humans outside the walls... and they want him and everyone else inside them, to die. Its bitter... Erwin has been fighting man eating beasts all his life. fighting for humanity's sake... but now that humanity includes the enemy... All of that, he knew without needed to go to the basement... and bringing him back to a dreamless life, one where he has to plan against humanity, sending soldiers to die and kill other soldiers... that was never a thought until the very end... so he elected to let his LIFE not be in vain, and the DEATHS of everyone else be stain with a hollow, sorrowful victory that would lead to countless more deaths... deaths that may very well lead into the "useless" category.

Daily dose of aot clarification - i find it interesting how the author interconnects everything that happened. E.g u might think Flock is an irrelevant rando that isn't in anyway part of the situation but if u think about it, he kinda is, and he literally has every right to be. The biggest "pussy ass biatch" in the squad was Floch BC HE WAS THE ONLY ONE COMPLAINING about everything. "He's doing it for the right reasons, Erwin" He absolutely was NOT doing it for the right reasons. His entire goal was to prove that humanity existed outside the walls because they murdered his father to keep that a secret. He managed to get to the position he held because he had a natural gift for making amazing speeches and strategy. He said it himself, he was selfish. The entire conversation with Levi was him trying to convince himself to abandon his father's dream and actually do what he had been asking his soldiers to do all the time: dedicate his heart to humanity instead of his own selfish goal. The flashback to Kenny was directly related to Erwin. Once he got to the basement and got the answers he needed to prove his father right, would he still have the motivation to keep going? Would he, in the words of Kenny, have something to be drunk on? Levi knew the answer was maybe not. So that's why he chose Armin.

Erwin was already conflicted, he knows that his plan is the only way to counter attack the beast titan, but he's hesitating to carry-out his plan because of the burden he had to bear for sending everyone to their deaths & still not able to know the truth about the basement. Levi saw him waver, he saw his vulnerable side. He saw that his friend is already tired for carrying the guilt of sending everyone to their deaths. So Levi took his burden and commanded him to do what has to be done. Levi: "You did great, you fought hard, No one else could've gotten us this far. I'll make the choice for you, give up on your dreams and charge to your death, lead those crying children straight to hell." And after Levi said that, Erwin smiled and replied "LEVI, THANK YOU. I NEEDED THAT." 😭😭😭 🎵Sayonara sekai Narabu kage nobite majiwaranai 🎶 When Levi was about to choose between Erwin and Armin, he remembered that last conversation he had with Erwin, Erwin had accepted the mission and is ready to die for humanity, he already accepted his death, so Levi chose Armin to live and he chose Erwin to rest. Spoiler: Erwin, I didn't choose you, and I have no regrets about that, to entrust the future to someone with the same look in his eyes you all had.

choosing armin is right bcoz it was mandatory for the story and plot.. he can never become like Erwin never ever in his lifetime(I have completed the series that's why I think like that). Armin is innocent and has pure heart doesn't means he can overtook Erwin in terms of leadership and strategies.. and now talking abt the fact that armin solely dies in the battle and Erwin dies with many soldiers, both situations were different.. Armin had attack titan and he was close to colossal and on the other hand Erwin and the soldiers were too far from beast titan and still he got the plan which exterminate all the titans and beast titan.. All the characters know, at this point, is what Rod and Kenny said, and what Eren and Historia witnessed, which is very little. I've seen so many different theories as to what happened to Rod, and unless it comes from a bona fide manga reader (assuming the manga gave a straight answer), I don't know what's correct. The characters know even less.

Both characters are amazing and the choice is certainly not easy. The point is the writing for Erwin's motivation and character arc is about finding the truth and reaching the basement. Once they get there its safe to say his character development ends. With Armin however his dream goes further beyond the walls and a basement. He wants to see the world and the sea. RIP Erwin.

Just like the confusion that was caused by the collosal titan causing a nuke in this season for the first time but not the 3 times prior. It's because the shifter can choose to cause the explosion and each of the 3 times Bert had a reason to not cause it. Just like what you said, Armin is like mini Erwin already, he had proven a lot and we all witnessed that because we follow the story on their (main characters) perspective so its natural that we appreciate Armin's achievements more than Erwin's . But imagine, if Erwin was the one who was revived and inherited the Colossal titan with his great intelligence in both military and political aspects, his leadership, patriotism, confidence, bravery, judgement, influence, and great combat skills. How will the story turn out?

Lots of people tend to come up with this same idea. "Why didn't they split the injection and turn them both to titans?", right?
Well yeah, theoretically they might be able turn them both but then what? Since they'd lost Reiner by then, only one of them could eat Bertholt and turn back to human, the other would have to stay a mindless titan, which arguably equals to or worse than death.
They had no idea if doing so would cause the injection to fail or not, but in the case of them doing that and restraining the new dumb titan, I'm pretty sure Erwin would gladly live as a dumb titan for a dozen years or so for the chance to learn what's in the basement (and even go over seas at that point), he'd def think it's worth it.

The one who licked the spine fluid from the broken syringe was Rod Reiss... of ROYAL BLOOD. Which is possible that he was able to turn by just licking it. No guarantee that would be the same for either Armin or Erwyn. And regardless of being able to share from one syringe, who else can they eat? Reiner was recovered by Zeke. Bertoldt is the only titan shifter in their possession.

Levi realized in that moment what Kenny's dying words meant and it gave him a new perspective: everyone is a slave to something, because everyone needs a reason to face the cruelty of the world and still keep pushing. He realized that whoever was going to lead the scouts needed to have a dream, to motivate him, to push him to fight.
Erwin had practically achieved his dream at that point, his ultimate goal, which was to get to the basement and learn the truth about humanity and the titans. He was extremely close. After that Erwin would have had no more goals, once his life's mission was fulfilled, so he also would have no reason to keep pushing and endure the fight. Armin on the other hand had a different dream, he wanted to explore and discover the whole world outside of the walls. Armin was younger and his dream was far in the future. That and the fact that Erwin himself recognized Armin's potential and said of Armin that he was one of humanity's greatest weapons (or something along those lines), ultimately made Levi change his mind about who would be a greater asset for humanity.
He also realized that letting go of his dream, letting another person (Levi) decide and finally surrendering to death, had removed a huge weight off of Erwin's shoulders, a weight that he had been careying for a long time. And Levi thought that the peace Erwin experienced in his final moments would be a good way for his friend to go out.

The Basement was going to be his validation.
When he was planning to capture the Female Titan, he could have gotten some validation there maybe... but Annie hardened. So he still couldn't get that 100% assurance.
Then, just a while ago when the Beast Titan first appeared, and with all those others... at this point, Erwin knows for a fact that humans are in the mindless titan.
Remember when he smiled about hearing that for the first time? Well that was because it was more evidence that humans are outside the walls.
But, during this fight with the Beast, he knew his dream came true... There are defiantly humans outside the walls... and they want him and everyone else inside them, to die.
Its bitter... Erwin has been fighting man eating beasts all his life. fighting for humanity's sake... but now that humanity includes the enemy...
All of that, he knew without needed to go to the basement... and bringing him back to a dreamless life, one where he has to plan against humanity, sending soldiers to die and kill other soldiers... that was never a thought until the very end... so he elected to let his LIFE not be in vain, and the DEATHS of everyone else be stain with a hollow, sorrowful victory that would lead to countless more deaths... deaths that may very well lead into the "useless" category.
It was just that erwin's goal ended at the basement but armin had a comparatively long term goal, so levi choose the latter

E.g u might think Flock is an irrelevant rando that isn't in anyway part of the situation but if u think about it, he kinda is, and he literally has every right to be. He absolutely was NOT doing it for the right reasons. His entire goal was to prove that humanity existed outside the walls because they murdered his father to keep that a secret. He managed to get to the position he held because he had a natural gift for making amazing speeches and strategy. He said it himself, he was selfish. The entire conversation with Levi was him trying to convince himself to abandon his father's dream and actually do what he had been asking his soldiers to do all the time: dedicate his heart to humanity instead of his own selfish goal. The flashback to Kenny was directly related to Erwin. Once he got to the basement and got the answers he needed to prove his father right, would he still have the motivation to keep going? Would he, in the words of Kenny, have something to be drunk on? Levi knew the answer was maybe not. So that's why he chose Armin.
Floch asked tò levi why he choose Armin his answer was to not let Erwin become the Devil again. Dreams goal..

Erwin was already conflicted, he knows that his plan is the only way to counter attack the beast titan, but he's hesitating to carry-out his plan because of the burden he had to bear for sending everyone to their deaths & still not able to know the truth about the basement. Levi saw him waver, he saw his vulnerable side. He saw that his friend is already tired for carrying the guilt of sending everyone to their deaths. So Levi took his burden and commanded him to do what has to be done.
Levi: "You did great, you fought hard, No one else could've gotten us this far. I'll make the choice for you, give up on your dreams and charge to your death, lead those crying children straight to hell."
And after Levi said that, Erwin smiled and replied "LEVI, THANK YOU. I NEEDED THAT."

choosing armin is right bcoz it was mandatory for the story and plot.. he can never become like Erwin never ever in his lifetime(I have completed the series that's why I think like that). Armin is innocent and has pure heart doesn't means he can overtook Erwin in terms of leadership and strategies.. and now talking abt the fact that armin solely dies in the battle and Erwin dies with many soldiers, both situations were different.. Armin had attack titan and he was close to colossal and on the other hand Erwin and the soldiers were too far from beast titan and still he got the plan which exterminate all the titans and beast titan..

In the No Regrets OVA Erwin told Levi that once you start letting people make decisions for you then you should just give up. Or something to that effect. That’s why Levi knelt down and said “I’m making the decision. Give up on your dream and die” and that gave Erwin some relief. It allowed him to follow through with his charge. That’s why he thanked Levi for choosing for him. Maybe I misinterpreted all of that but I thought that was the main reason Levi chose Armin. The “thank you” from Erwin isn’t even shown until right before Levi uses the injection.
