    The real kicker to all of this, is that XBOX has ALWAYS had these problems, even before Matricks non-sense. They've NEVER been able to consistently get projects off the ground. Anyone remember those 3 Halo side projects that almost ALL got cancelled while Bungie was making ODST and Reach? Bungie isn't exactly the hallmark of reliability when it comes to developing fully fleshed out games and ideas and were willing to cut development on whatever they were doing when they didn't think it would pan out.
      Every single one of their games that isn't Oni is rife with versions that they ended up completely scrapping. Halo 1 was an RTS that was supposed to release exclusively on Mac in the 90s, Halo 2 got completely deleted and remade in a year because they were obligated to release, Destiny 1 had most of its content scrapped like 3 different times leading to the issues with that game and its Grimoire Cards

    While watching the Xbox podcast. I repeatedly yelled “Yes Phil, the whole ‘we need to do away with exclusives. Play Anywhere’ is a nice sentiment, but not one based in reality!” You don’t lead the industry to making big changes when you’re last place. Also, Nintendo and Sony don’t have a good reason to stop exclusives, so they won’t, no matter how many speeches Phil gives. It’s because in reality, this whole Play Anywhere initiative is just a desperate attempt to cling on to their business and if they ever ended up back in the lead, they would totally backpedal on a lot of it and make things exclusive again.

    • @cyberninjazero5659
      @cyberninjazero5659 9 месяцев назад +3

      I said this in my own comment but while Xbox is in last place Sony isn't doing much better in first having just announced end of life for PS5. The biggest problem I see is a lack of what I call "Gen" exclusives. As in games that are multiplatform but just aren't on the previous generation, Granblue Relink which came out this year is still on PS4, now Tekken 8 just came out and it's selling really good which might help push the tide then add to that GTA 6 next year and we're talking. I say this because Console exclusives help you decide which console to buy when you're already thinking about buying new consoles but "gen" exclusives make you think "my stuffs outdated it's time for a new console"

      @carl8790 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@cyberninjazero5659don't forget the, "buy the PS5 so you can play games like bloodborne, now with better performance." shtick. Same for the switch 2 for their games like Zelda TOTK, whenever that releases. Sony doesn't seem that desperate as yet, because if that were the case, we would've seen bloodborne (I really like BB so apologies for using this example so much) or even the Demon Souls remake being announced for the PC by now.

    • @cyberninjazero5659
      @cyberninjazero5659 9 месяцев назад +1

      @carl8790 In a way, Microsoft "owns" PC, being that almost everyone uses Windows on it. Sure, they might not get a cut from Valve, but console hardware is a side thing for them that they've already talked about dropping previously. Sony is in a far different position while it is also a diversified company with more things going for it than the console market, but it's never really sounded like it was considering throwing in the towel before unlike MS. Hell, they managed to turn around the PS3, so over time, I think it sold more than the 360 but by a small margin. Of course announcing EoL itself is very weird since this gen is pretty much just starting Tekken 8 sold big and two thirds of that was thanks to PS5, GTA 6 comes out next year. We've seen this video talk about FF7R2, Spider-Man 2 was also a massive financial success. The EoL thing is very weird since the console if anything should just now be getting into its stride

      @@cyberninjazero5659 it seems like to me that this generation is just weird u know. With the whole pandemic effecting the development processes and whatnot. We're also in a somewhat 'recession' that we're slowly coming out of, and people aren't spending as they used to during the pandemic. Companies like Sony, we're expecting sales to remain the same like before and are now adjusting. I'm not surprised by the language they used, because it seems like the execs were really hoping that the sales momentum they experience during the pandemic would continue.

    Steam certainly isn't perfect, but we have them to thank for the rise of indie games, i think. back during the xbox 360 era, Microsoft charged a ton of money for game submission AND for every patch submission. Steam doesn't charge for patch submission at all, so that makes game development viable for indie devs, especially indie devs trying to make ambitious early access games.
    Microsoft (and Sony) had to change their policies as a result of Steam, because Steam proved that indie games from companies that can't afford to pay up-front certification fees can end up being wildly profitable.

      I'd argue that's the reason Xbox seems to be focusing so much on digital and software rather than hardware. The issue is the lack of digital library at a time when people really cemented that, So if i had to guess that's why theyre focusing so much on game pass and multiplat. The goal being to get the games in people's libraries then buying into gamepass. That should in theory shore up their biggest problem, and then the hardware will come behind it. IMO their biggest hurdle short term is actually going to be how they treat indies right now, and how easy it is for them to get things published on gamepass i.e patches.

    "It's almost as if our overruling principle is to always maximize shareholder value."
    "Yeah, even for a cutthroat business it's weird for them to say that so bluntly."
    What you guys may not know is that publicly traded American corporations are legally required to maximize shareholder value, and can be sued by shareholders for making seemingly normal decisions that drop the price of the stock in the short term. The reason that companies like Larian are able to disregard maximizing shareholder value is because they're privately traded.

    Game Pass is such a ridiculous revenue generation tactic because it inherently created a system where it's core consumer base purchases a one month subscription at $10 whenever a brand new $60-70 game comes out, resulting in a two-tiered purchase platform where the vast majority of releases can be completed within the $10 one-month timeframe and never returned to, meaning that in the mind of the consumer most games are not worth their full purchase price.
    The only measures that Xbox can realistically take to mitigate this are either making games that do not respect your time and have a shitload of padding to boost hours played, releasing games with an episode format so they can have a release schedule that requires several months of subscription fees to complete, or canning Game Pass completely which would immediately blow up in their face.
    Also remember when a video game console launched at like $300 max and then over the course of its lifespan would drop in price until it eventually settled at like $99 + pack in games as a bonus, meanwhile these end of life consoles, as defined by the manufacturer, are still $500-600 and come with absolutely fucking nothing

      It's not strange but mostly the result of Xbox being the small fish in a big pond. The expectations around ROI of a Microsoft division are naturally going to be WAY higher than for Playstation out of Sony or Nintendo out of, well, themselves.
      Xbox has been on the backfoot with their own parent company basically breathing down their necks and looking at axing them for 10 years and that's led to them making decisions for short-term profit just to stay alive.
      By comparison, Playstation is one of the biggest revenue earners at Sony and, while not by much, it leads in profit within the conglomerate (just a bit ahead of financials services and music).
      Nintendo would rather DIE before giving up gaming because it's 90% of the revenue and even more of their profit.
      Xbox has to make decisions because Microsoft doesn't even really need the Xbox console or hardware to survive as a conglomerate or brand, unlike Sony and Nintendo which either largely or ENTIRELY depend on their consoles

    Playstation has been very clear about why porting exclusives to PCs works. That happens about two years after the initial release and even brings in people from PC who want the next game early. Case in point the FF7 Remake selling insanely well, getting ported, everyone knows Rebirth will do the exact same thing, and people are still buying PS5s to get it years early. Same with God of War Ragnarok and Horizon 2. Plus people double dip and you get money from a new audience.

      I think Sony is also deliberately vague about which games are coming to PC and when. It's been nearly four years since Ghost of Tsushima came out, but it hasn't hit PC yet and we don't know when/if it will.
      I think this ambiguity makes it harder for people to say "I'll just wait XX months" and then okay it on PC.
      It probably helps Sony's console sales when they release God of War 2018 on PC shortly before they ramp up the marketing campaign for God of War Ragnarok. I've seen a few streamers play GOW 2018 on PC and then buy a PS5 for Ragnarok.
      I think most PC gamers are content to wait and play Sony games if and when they come to PC. But there is a greater than zero number of PC gamers that buy a PS5 because they don't want to wait.

    I cannot believe that Phil Spencer comment that good games don't matter. That is the entire fucking reason people buy consoles. When the 360 came out they had Mass Effect, Halo 3, Gears, and BioShock. Those games did not exist on PS3 and I was way too young to understand the concept of a "timed exclusive". Fast forward to Christmas 2009 and I'm opening up a PS3 with Infamous and Batman: Arkham Asylum packed in. Then I'm playing Uncharted, Killzone, Littlebigplanet, Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Last of Us, and others. Fast forward to Christmas 2013 and I'm opening up a PS4 with NO GAMES IM INTERESTED IN aside from Killzone: Shadow Fall and Battlefield 4 and playing Resogun on a loop for like a year straight all because of the promise of the next Uncharted game being imminent. Fast forward to 2020 and in the option of getting a PS5 or Xbox as an adult, I opt to purchase a PS5 for $500 and a year later I grab the Series S for Halo Infinite and so I can subscribe to Game Pass so the indies I like will just come and go on a shittily made UI so I'm not spending hundreds on games per month. The best thing Xbox has dome is basically offer things at a discount, which is fantastic for consumers but does jack shit for anybody else. Since Halo Infinite, I have no purchased a single game for over $40 on my Xbox. I don't expect to boot my Xbox up and spend $70. I have bought 28 games in the last year at full price on my PS5 and if Starfield, Lies of P, Forza Motorsport, Hellblade 2, and others were on PS5 and there was no Game Pass I absolutely would have purchased those games on PS5 for whatever the day one asking price was, no questions asked. Nintendo, decided to do their own thing and have pioneered portable console devices to the point that even Valve copied them to great success. I suspect the next Xbox and Playstation will be portable gaming consoles too.
      Honestly, what Microsoft is doing right now is pretty smart. Shooting themselves in the foot short term, but they have been able to pivot themselves into having a strong foothold in the PC space (game wise). They are actually in a much stronger position financially than Sony, which is crazy considering Sony has sold more consoles, but console sales mean less and less with each generation as more and more people move to PC.
      Eventually, I see Playstation and Xbox being the main platforms for their games, but everything of theirs will be everywhere. Effectively, like buying a pre-built tower. And they barely make money off console sales anyway. Game sales (specifically digital) and subscriptions are the main money makers for both now. Why do you think Sony doubled the price for their online service without offering anything new for it? Because they could and PS fans ate it up.

      And then they can pad out all of their major releases with a ton of smaller AA titles because it turns out the Switch is the last bastion for other third-party mid-budget games that wouldn't be given a second glance on other "next-gen" consoles.
      Nintendo has made a ton of bad decisions, and whatever console they make next is going to live in the Switch's shadow. But they watch where they step, and you don't build up a foundation like they have by rushing towards short-term goals.

    Don Mattrick: People *hate* used car salesmen.
    Phil Spencer: People *love* used car salesmen.
    Don was pushing for crap absolutely nobody wanted/needed and he is rightly infamous for it. Phil on the other hand tells people whatever they want to hear, regardless of the reality of the situation and that is why people love/hate him. Phil likes to say it would be cool if (insert franchise here, such as Mechassault which he said again recently) came back, when he has the power to actually make it happen when he just wants to pander to his weird diehard fanbase. Phil is nowhere near as bad as Don, but his two faced nature makes it hard for most people to take him seriously. Microsoft isn't going anywhere. They are likely however to keep tripping over their own hubris and money at almost every opportunity.

    Yeah, I've said it a lot. Modern console wars stuff still exists because most people do not want to spend $500 for a box that plays video games in the first place and then once they have spent it they absolutely do not want to have spent it on the wrong box! And there will be a wrong box, always! For the last two generations, it's clearly been the xbox!
    It has very little to do with the digital library you've built up--realistically you will barely play those titles and the ones you will play will have fallen in price to be way below the cost of buying the wrong $500 box--and more to do with new, upcoming software. One of the boxes will be missing some or all of what you would like to play and that's a $500+ mistake to correct.
    I also think "all the games end up on PC anyway" doesn't really hurt Sony at all. Even though I'm primarily a PC gamer, I have friends who are console only and I talk to them about games so, uh, I'm not waiting even 3 months to buy FF7 Rebirth. I instead reluctantly own a PS5 and will be buying and playing the game on release so I can talk about it. And then I'll probably buy it again on PC on a sale eventually before FF7 Rewhatever releases to play it with better graphics/performance. They've got me. Their plan is effective. Microsoft's plan of no games I am interested in is not effective in comparison.

    I share Woolies' sentiments about PC gaming versus console gaming. Tweaking setting is annoying game to game and consoles just keep things simple and quick.
    It seems the older a game is the bigger a pain it is to get it to run on modern PCs. Why spend hours tweaking game settings, pc settings or troubleshooting a game just to maybe get it to run better? I'd love to just load up Stalker and play. I got 15 minutes in before the game crashes. Extremely annoying. For every exception to this rule (like Max Payne 2 which runs beautifully on modern pcs no problem) there are dozens of examples of older games just requiring too much troubleshooting to get running. I can spend more time getting the original Alone In the Dark to run properly than it would actually take to play the game and thats really stupid. I like to play games. Not settings tweak and troubleshoot.

    Damn, Woolie might be right that the next Xbox is just going to be a pre-built PC, but with the Xbox branding name lol. Xbox only cares about the 'ecosystem' which is gamepass. That is the platform now and they want it to be available everywhere, hell even on the Switch and PS5 if they were given permission. The console is just secondary at this point, which unfortunately for Xbox, is costing them a lot of money.
    Also, there's a brewing problem for Xbox's gamepass and that is the games themselves. They're getting desperate by buying up all these games studios and now, buying up giants like Activision Blizzard.
