"Living is easy with eyes closed; misunderstanding all you see."
That line became instantly poignant during this video lol
@@ZoeyPaigeLunaPhD 😂
Zoey, I could not be a teacher. Can you imagine being around people this ignorant all day.
That's a great line!
@@Hayseo Yikes, But... for real.
John Lennon based the song on his childhood memories of playing in the garden of Strawberry Field, a Salvation Army children's home in Liverpool. Starting in November 1966, the band spent 45 hours in the studio, spread over five weeks, creating three versions of the track. The final recording combined two of those versions, which were entirely different in tempo, mood and musical key. It features reverse-recorded instrumentation, Mellotron flute sounds, an Indian swarmandal, tape loops and a fade-out/fade-in coda, as well as a cello and brass arrangement by producer George Martin. For the promotional film, the band used experimental techniques such as reverse effects, jump-cuts and superimposition.
Nice search, ty
Yes. It's a "promotional film". It's not really a "music video" as they are conceived of and produced these days.
John did at least 27 takes of just the opening vocal of this song and then still wasn't satisfied so they had to mix two of the takes together so his voice changes slightly when the instruments kick in.
Write a book already
nice copy and paste
George Martin is one of the all time producers. His technical genius was decades ahead of his time.
Paul finally said he was truly the fifth Beatle when he passed away. Sgt. Peppers wouldn't exist without him.
Brian eno though. Look him up. That dude had the magic. Everyone wanted to work with him. Working with Brian eno is like getting an Eminem feature on your songs in the 2000s
In a way he is part of beatles music on some songs-albums. That is how big impact in final result.
@@futurereflections4097 he is famous. Also Phil Spector. To me the impact of George Martin and Phil Spector is even greater. And then the guy that did Slayer, Rage against the machine and Beastie boys first album.
He IS absolutely the 5th Beatle.
Drugs. This was one of the first LSD-inspired songs in rock music history.
Not the first by a long stretch...not even the first Beatles song inspired by LSD.
@@wfly81 he said one of not the first but at the same time it’s not the first song inspired by LSD tho like you said
My mistake. I read it too fast and missed that.
The tree jump was edited to be backwards, that's why it looks weird lol
This video was way ahead of its time. The Beatles just never settled for repeating what they did before. That was just a tricked out upright piano. Lol
No it's a mellotron not a piano
The dog was Paul's and was named Martha. Paul wrote and recorded a song for her with The Beatles called Martha, My Dear
the video is artistic. by this time The Beatles were influencing music and pop culture
They changed everything in 1963/64 . By this time they were kings of the mountain .
The dog’s name is Martha. There is a song about her you can react to. “Martha my dear”
Love that song....Haven't seen a reaction to it
Oh, god. No.
That and Fool on the hill was about his dog
When the Beatles started out they had a saying to inspire them when they were down about things . It went like this . “John would say, ‘Where are we goin’, fellas?’ And others would go, ‘To the top, Johnny!’ And John would say, ‘Where’s that, fellas?!’ And the others say, ‘To the toppermost of the poppermost, Johnny!’ And he’d say, ‘Riiiiight! ....Your to the top Intro reminds me of that
The Beatles were high as kites when they made this video. :)
Strawberry Fields Forever, recorded on November 24, 28, 29 and on December 8, 9, 15, 21, 22, 1966 based on Take 7 combined with the Take 26 trumpet quartet and trio of cellos recording sessions. Love you guys, keep up doing Beatles reactions!
Strawberry fields is a children's home, I have been there and to many of the places they sing about, liverpool is my home city. I would love to see you react to all of the Sgt Pepper album or at least to She's leaving home.
In February 1967 this was a totally new sound in music. Nobody had ever heard anything like 'Strawberry Fields Forever'.
After this ground breaking song they released the album that changed everything - 'Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band'.
When Jong sings it’s so melancholy in this Song! It hurts!😔
More Beatles for sure, try Happiness is a warm gun, Dear Prudence, a day in the life, Helter Skelter, all too much, , don’t let me down (rooftop version)
In my opinion the best Beatles song.
I agree
It may be mine, after Hey Jude. Not a great one for an early recommendation though. The more you know who they are, the better this song is.
@@debjorgo I became a Beatles fan 45 years ago when I was a child. I listen to all songs of them. The older ones and the later. In all songs, wether they are written in 1963 or in 1968, you can hear that incredible quality - in totally different genres. There's is often a change in what I prefer at a time. But Strawberry fields is in my opinion just the best music quality they ever produced. Maybe some other songs with it too.
HI JUST DROVE PAST STRAWBERRY FIELDS THIS MORNING GREETINGS FROM LIVERPOOL
This is one the most Iconic song by The Beatles. Probably the top 10 song.
It's always good to see young people getting into the Beatles 👍
Are you guys always this happy? I hope you are, because you are so much fun to watch. This song was the flip side of Penny Lane. Perhaps the most creative Rock and Roll single ever recorded.
the Beatles were rarely, if ever, random
They did like putting in deliberately random words and phrases, if the words happened to sound good, or conjured up an interesting image.
For example: 'She was just seventeen... well you know what I mean..' They had no idea what they meant, but it rhymed and scanned, and they liked it as a second line because it kind of made you think of all the things it could mean.
Other lyrics like in I Am the Walrus and Come Together could be called stream of consciousness semi-gibberish - a style John had always liked for its surreal effect, ever since schoolboy scribbles and sketches and later his books eg John Lennon: In His Own Write. I believe this interest in the slightly bizarre intersecting with the everyday was in part based on Liverpool humour, which owed a lot to Irish humour with its frequently surreal edge.
As you say they were rarely completely random, in the sense of being unmonitored or sloppy. it was always random with a good artistic reason.
Looking forward to the premiere
Love you guys! 🙏🏼 This is literally the absolute first video ! In 1967! They were called promos then! But this was the FIRST ONE! Much love! 🙏🏼
"Living is easy with eyes closed..." means not paying attention to anything and being apathetic about everything.
Best song by The Beatles and that drumming by Ringo is eternal.
Check out these Beatle Tunes:
Got to Get You Into My Life
Hey Bull Dog
Helter Skelter
Yo Ringo killed it on this beat, his drumming is so 🔥
I've got the blue Ray and the actual time it took them to remaster the sound and the video is awesome they have to go through each frame of each video and replace Any bumps jumps alter the contrast and other elements
I'm following you guys, because everything I see you guys it's like listen to the Beatles for the very first time, and that was back in high-school in the 60s
This song and Penny Lane were released in early 1967 as a single. It ended up being a double A side meaning both songs were so good that they were both played on the radio as A sides. The Beatles had several of these during their career. No other artist even had one. Also, this song and Penny Lane were the first 2 songs in history that had the videos to promote the songs. MTV didn't come along until 1981, this was 14 years before that. George Harrison said jokingly in 1994 that The Beatles kinda invented MTV some 14 years before the concept of music videos. Strawberry Fields was actually a Salvation Army Orphanage home just down the road from the house where John was raised. As a small boy there were festivals there every summer (they were called fetes) and John would attend these with either his mother or his Aunt Mimi. Lennon said the song actually was not about the home, he was only using Strawberry Fields as an image. The song is actually a pretty deep one and you 2 should read up on it. Too much to get into right now. This song was an early one in the beginning of their LSD period.
My mum nearly got in the video for penny lane when she was a little girl she was out playing near where she lived in East London and the beetles turned up they said she and her friends could stay and be in the back ground but by the time filming started there was to many people
@@hod2116 What a memory, don't we wish it was us. Did she get autograph's?
What a great story, I think I'm getting a few goosebumps from it .
Thanks for sharing
I had a great encounter with Ringo in Pittsburgh, Pa in 1994. He was touring with his All Starr band which he still does now. I've seen him give times. He always has like five famous musicians from bands and solo artist's. This performance had Jack Bruce the bassist from Cream and what an incredible bass player he was too see live. There Timothy B. Schmidt from The Eagles and the lead singer from The Guess Who. I can't recall who else was there with him now. They would all take turns doing three songs of theirs and at the end of the show Ringo would come out from behind the drums up front and sing five of his Beatles and solo songs.
We were in the fourth row and I was at the end of the aisle. I had a black baseball cap with the green Apple on it and it said The Beatles. I had ordered it from one of the little catalogs that came with the "Anthology" series CD's. I walked about 30 feet to the front and tossed my hat up on stage and it landed a few feet away from him.
He looked at it, picked it up, looked at it and said "I remember these guys" Put on his head and broke into "With A Little Help From My Friends". After the song he told me to come up front and handed the hat to a security guard and he handed it back to me. Ringo looked at me and said " Thanks for that nostalgic moment" I treasure that hat. My wife and brother took photos and I have them tucked away somewhere in my collection. This in no way compares with your mothers experience though. If I had been a kid or young teen I may have pissed my parents. Penny Lane, The Beatles and she was there. Come on man, it doesn't get any better than that. I did get to see The Beatles live in Pittsburgh in 1964 when I was six years old. There were 12,500 screaming fans there that evening, most being young teen girls. From the count in and the first notes played you couldn't hear much of anything, but what a memory that's still seared into my brain after almost 59 years now. I feel that unless one attended one of their shows that one can't grasp the full craziness and what I would call barely controlled chaos went on at a Beatles concert.
It was all out of love though and innocent admiration for the band.
Once again Thanks for sharing your moms story.
Peace & Love
@@dougsusie2319 don't think she got autographs I do know it put her off John lennon as she has always been in to horses and she says he was terrified of the horses they had to ride and funny you mention jack Bruce as he lived about a couple of miles from us and my mum see Eric Clapton in the local supermarket ( I imagine on his way to see jack) and as she looked at him he put his finger to his mouth and went sshh
The Mellotron Flute sound is great!
One of the greatest songs ever
Also, I do wanna say, you can FREEZE strawberries so they don't mold quick. Frozen fruits and berries also make for AMAZING smoothies, btw. ^_^
Surealistic "What did they do that for ?" To get you asking questions.....like, what did they do that for.
Ahhhh, Ringo's goofy groovy drumming, always so perfect.
Ringo was about timing, and he had timing in spades.
If you want more Beatles......of course we want more Beatles. LoL. Once you start, you just can't stop.
Strawberry Fields is your frame of mind.
My common is they be tripping. No really they’re high on LSD😳
It's half a piano, half a piece of art, it only plays music if you really think hard about it.
The Beatles - don't let me down- rooftop concert
Paul, the one who jumped up into the tree (the film was run BACKWARDS, he can't jump UP that high LOL) who you asked how old he was, the song was released in Feb of 1967, Paul was still only 24, I am not sure when the video was filmed. Paul would turn 25 on June 18, 1967
Two songs I would recommend is Love You To and Within You Without You, both are written and solely performed by George Harrison and are imo absolute masterpieces and my two favourite songs of his, both strongly use an Indian instrument called a Sitar (basically an Indian guitar) and its use in both tracks are otherworldly and hypnotic
YES! Great song. So many great songs, but trust me, react to "Girl" or "You've got to hide your love away"
living is easy with eyes closed means a closed MIND.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS
The mixtures of random sounds and multiple musical layers was part of the "psychedelic" sound of the time. Strawberry Fields is the name of the recording studio where they did a lot of work (I think they recorded this album there)/
Greg, are you thinking of Strawberry studios in Stockport? Owned by 10cc
More Beatles
Another masterpiece from the fab four.
young people of 2021 want explanations to everything
Yeah, just take the damn thing in, kids; music is not a science project!
Keep in mind that this song came out in 1967, when the Beatles (and other bands) were experimenting with psychedelia--surrealistic and mind-bending music, imagery, etc.
They were young back then in the 60s and I think the piano is art, They also had a lot of good drugs back then!
Almost certainly one of the first video "promos" in 1967!
Secret to life in these lyrics
Tied for my fav Beatles song with Day In The Life.
The piano you are asking about is not a piano but a piece of art.
More Beatles. Please.
It's an Acid Trip.."Everything is broken up and dances". (Jim Morrison)
No Strawberry Fields near me in Suffolk, England. But, we did have, at the time of my own childhood in the 60s, five fields of roses just a sparrow's hop away and, not a mile further, a hill that was called, locally, 'Strawberry Hill' . . and everything, except within which my imagination played, was real.
They chose the name “Beatles” in honor of Buddy Holly and The Crickets.. as did “The Hollies”.. The death of Buddy Holly (the day the music died) was a major influence on early rock n roll.. it’s explained in Don McLean’s song “American Pie”
ME TOOOO
You guys are precious trying to understand psychadelica
My reading glasses are just like John Lennon's glasses.
National Health Service?
Paul, the guy in Yellow, jumping up the tree was 25 back then, so not "older" he is older NOW, almost 54 years tho ! :D
The Beatles were in their twenties in this video and the film was using reverse techniques which showed the action backwards. This song and the band were heavily influenced by LSD during this period of time. (don't try this at home kids) The piano is just a piece of artwork, the (not so subtle) hint is when they're pouring paint all over it. Taking acid helps to "get" the video.
Best thumbnail ever.
This piano is a junked out upright piano. It was turned into a musical sculpture for the purposes of this video. Most of the keyboard parts in this song were performed on a Melotron.
Strawberry Field was an orphanage close to John Lennon's childhood home in Liverpool, England. I was there when I went on a Beatles Tour of England in 1994. There used to be a fantastic Victorian mansion there, but it was torn down in the 1970s; you can see a picture of it if you search Strawberry Field on Google. I can't say I understand this video, but I do think I understand the song. The singer is getting higher and higher as the song progresses; by the last verse, he is so high that what he is saying is incoherent. So the song is about taking drugs to "tune out" the world and revert to your childhood fantasies; in the singer John Lennon's case, he used to play with the orphans at Strawberry Field, so his idea of the perfect escape from the world and its troubles was to be at Strawberry Fields - he added the S at the end because it's easier to sing - forever.
You guys trip me out trying to groove to psychedelia.
LOL. The jumping around the tree was filmed and played back backwards, yo! 😂 (He dropped down from the branch and hopped backwards)
You two have a great following but you don't know what you're missing without headphones, for real!
The video is surreal.
One of the first music videos made.
They were trying to be experimental. React to REAL LOVE, a video that was made many years after the beatles broke up and after John was killed. John's wife Yoko decided to give the rest of the ex beatles a song that John worked on before he died. This was a beautiful gift to them and they put in their instruments and voices and recorded it in1979 and suddenly the Beatles were on the charts ...it was very exciting at the time, cause when they broke up people were very upset and crying..In real Love you get to see them older. It's a nice song.
Great song. I grew up on a strawberry farm. They taste good, but it's back breaking work; out in the hot sun bent over. It taught me I didn't want to be a farmer.
Lucy in the sky With Diamonds
According to the thomann.de blog, it's a Mellotron, an organ-type instrument that uses pre-recorded tape loops of different instruments which are triggered by striking the piano keys. The Beatles experimented with all sorts of instruments.
For better success wit strawberries, rinse them when you first get them home and cut out the hulls (green stems) before they go in the fridge. This makes them more appealing to eat right away. This was the first rock video of all time.
It would be so much fun to take you guys back in time... when this was released.
Seemed like all the amazing stuff was released in Fall, early Winter.
Imagine 1967! I was 13. I had never heard anything like “Strawberry Fields” and “Penny Lane”. They were the two sides of a 45rpm record I still have.
The lyrics were printed in the music sections of even local newspapers. This record was a milestone. Beatles were bending brain cells at the time. Seriously!
I love that you played this. Maybe the music slipped past. It’s so hard to live another’s life. You are wonderful people. I wish you the best, of course.
This is an interesting song on a number of levels. First of all, it was the first time anyone saw The Beatles after their lovable mop top personas ceased to exist, so the facial hair was a bit of a shock. Secondly, it used a lot of avant-garde methods of video recording, including backward film; Paul “jumping“ into the tree. I was seven when this came out, and it was groundbreaking at the time. Plus, incredibly bad ass cool
Good song!
This video was made during a time when they were experimenting with mind altering drugs ( psychedelic). They made several movies: A Hard Days Night is one of therm. Yellow Submarine is a cartoon movies also. Great band
Strawberry is a orphanage in Liverpool.
The second time John says Let me take you down cuz I’m GOING TO…
it’s because they used 2 versions of the song that are 2 speeds then slowed it down so it sounds creepy
This song was released in 1967. They were around 23 to 26 years old.
Paul was around 26-ish when they recorded that (Paul’s the one who jumped on his knees)
React to John Lennon Beautiful Boy ❤️
Thx! LSD!
Haha I have the same shirt in my closet that Kae's wearing in this video
"The Beatles right now is random." lol
Mr Martin did not let his own ego get in way he worked with the band
With the weirdest key change which was 2 different takes sliced together, after the first (Let me take you down you) can hear it Paul here was about 25
Hey key love your videos keep the grind up from Lulu
Psychedelic beatles era i Loove it😊👌✌
Back in the day, we thought strawberry fields was the afterlife!
Are you guys back from your medical time off already? If ya are that's totally fuckin awesome & that would be tremendous so here's to hoping that you 2 are back & I'll drink to that 🍺🍺
The piano you were asking about was a Mellotron
No, it's a piano
To the top! That, for some reason, reminds me of what Lennon used to say to the guys in the band when the Beatles were starting out... Where are we going boys? To the toppermost of the poppermost Johnny!
The Beatles were in their mid twenties.
The end of the song i hear John Lennon said " I Buried Paul " No Craberry Sauce.
