  • Many labels have been placed on China’s post-1990s generations who now make up the bulk of China’s workforce. With 190 million of them, they have been labelled everything from being individualistic to wasteful and caught up with consumerism.
But are the millennial and Gen Z generations just a mere product of their times? Or are they a driving force that’s shaping the country? CNA Correspondent looks into how China’s millennial and Gen Z generations are navigating attitudes towards work, housing, national identity and societal pressure in a new era of change.

From the young ppl who were interviewed, I feel that they r no difference than the majority of working ppl in this world: Try to find a life that’s balanced between work & their personal interest/development. I think the pandemic made ppl paused & reflected on what’s important in their lives, thus, sped up the changes in lifestyle, goals & attitude.

Nothing bad, me I'm also a gen Z but I guess we are fed up or we don't want to be a slave for a huge company like in the late 60's up to 90's but I guess we have this vision that we can do the things that make us happy which is fine. The only bad thing about us is that we are too anxious and not confident enough with ourselves because we want to be perfect and not have this fear of rejection or I think we are too independent that one can feel lonely and make us anxious to speak to other people.

China used to be family oriented. After the 1 child policy, it made the people compete with one another. Relative, or not. And that's sad to see. I'm from the Philippines. I'm from what I consider a lower middle class family. We have only enough money to live comfortably, no extra money to go on vacation but we do seldom go on road trips near us if everyone is free. I had plans to move out of my parents house but then the pandemic hit. The world stopped. Even my plans got derailed. I experienced worker burnout after working 14hrs/4 days a week. When my company closed the site I worked at, I also handed in my resignation. I took a rest for a year. As well as stop all social media interaction because for me, social media just reminded me of work since that's how my old team communicated. I almost tapped my savings out. Luckily, my parents understood me and let me be free to do what I want tp recover. And since I had no vices, I just spent the year doing household chores, doing sidelines, reading novels online, and sleeping in. Currently, I finally had the confidence to start working and finally have a new job that has decent pay and a pretty good work/life balance. And if everything works well, I could restart my plan in a year or 2. This is something that most Gen Z adults in China would probably not be able to experience.

There are over 600 different cities in China. You will only encounter problems when you want to own a house IF you want to live in tier 1, or tier 2 cities. If you don't want to live a stressful life, living in a small city isn't a bad choice.

Thats not how it works. People that live in small cities/towns/county's still have stressful life, without the financial gains. Last time I visit my relatives, they didn't have heaters in the winter, the room was -10C because they can't afford the energy bills. I get that China have come a long way, but for the average Chinese citizen, there is still a long way to go to catch up to first world countries. Thats how I honestly feel as a Chinese.

CNA is obviously shallow on China issues. You will see "lying flat" everywhere on Chinese social media, but you can never see them give up oppotunities, if your conclusion is right, there will not be so fierce competition between our young people. Young parents tend to pay more money for their children in education. I've never experienced less competition in my real life, otherwise young Chinese won't be so anxious now like me. Many Chinese are eager for the opportunity to overwork actually, if there are good job oppotunities.

While I agree with you on your point about shallowness of the report, I think the message of what CNA or this reporter is trying to raise is the issue of post-90s gen Z, i have one of my own post-90s, all the things these gen Z were saying resonate with what we as parents face with our own kids. I have also seen another good info-documentary program from HK where I am now, conducting similar interviews with HK post-90s, you will find exactly the same attitude and the ideas of “laying flat” it’s because of some, though not their own faults, less mature and awareness of the reality and challenges ahead, they are not giving up or anything but is finding their own way to fight and survive in this rat race, which they are not interested in.

@@iammeandmyself2083 I was teaching in Guangzhou china from 2009-2013. I saw the laying flat mentality then from rich kids. I also noticed the workers didn't spend work hours productively. Working long hours in the 996 rat race doesn't yeild productivity. My teaching assistant took long time to finish thier translation and with mistakes. I asked them to cross reference, but they just find the first thing on Baido. I'm not German but we know how productive it's workforce are.
One example, there are 2 international trade shows in Guangzhou. They have 4 greeters standing by the hotel shuttle buses to greet hotel guest, it makes no difference to the visitors if there's 4 ladies saying welcome or no one greeting by the shuttle buses.
