Touareg V10 TDI muffler delete straight pipe

- Removed the stock muffler, exhaust is now 3.5" ss pipe to 4.5" ss MagnaFlow tips. Dyno'd 318 hp, 566 ft lb tq before the exhaust. Had just washed it, so it throws a bunch of water out at first. Two pictures of it: i7.photobucket.... i7.photobucket....
I'm amazed at how quiet that engine still is even without a muffler I can't believe it.
its because the sound is having a hard time getting passed all the pistons. theres 8 or ten of them.
+john martin they should bring back this engine with over 400hp I think it would be awesome to see them build this for a half ton pickup truck even like a Toyota Tundra or something like that, it is 10 pistons
+john martin 10 pistons and two turbos. The turbos quiet it significantly.
Yep, turbo impellers breaking up the sound waves.
The cats make it quiet too. I'm curious what a 100% straight pipe sounds like in these.
how do i put that engine into my mk2 golf?
Cut the roof off.
mtxrawkus hahahaha holy shit that's funny, i wanna think you're joking but it's funnier thinking you're serious
mtxrawkus remove the firewall, or extend the front end a couple feet. It barely fits in the Touareg, lol
why? no w12 swap yet?
It's a Mk4 Golf, but still.
Bluemotion ting

@MooperSC I have four catalytic converters and have passed WA's emissions inspections three times since I bought this thing. Mufflers are not for emissions, only for exhaust volume. By removing it, the engine runs more efficiently and my MPG's went up... On long trips I get upwards of 28 mpg cruising at 80 mph. People with software changes on these tdi's (and diesels in general) are known to get BETTER mileage, unlike electronically tuned gas motors.
Why the fuck would you have 4 cat convertors?
@@dhern2613 thought the same thing 🤣
@@Ruthlesscoach im pretty sure the v10 and v12 diesel vw/audi are basically 2 engines on a single crank, as they have 2 separate ecus, 1 for each bank and basically run independently.
So would also make sense they have 2 cats per bank, and EU regs may have dictated for 2 cats per 6 cylinders?
Sounds perfect. And what a great design that it looks like a GTI in your driveway.
Still puts out less smoke than American diesel pickups
Mast3rSkillz probably lies on emissions though
@@Santiaguilar98 who cares lol, tree huggers
RECON_RON shit idk about you but I don’t like hot weather so I care
@@Santiaguilar98 then move up north, that easy
RECON_RON rather companies not be shiesty
The turbocharger itself gives much backpressure for the engine. For a diesel engine, the less restriction in the exhaust, the better. Thus straight piping is ideal, and you can never go too big on the pipes either. But it's different for your gas powered 4-cylinder, it needs back pressure but if it's turbocharged the exhaust already has alot of backpressure just from that. This is what I've been told when asking mechanics.
Backpressure.....pressure pushing backward, from some pressurizing source outside of the vehicle's tail pipe?
No, just restriction to scavenging. Expanding gasses in an exhaust system are a lot like water flowing through a series of pipes. Is there "backpressure" at the traveling gun sprinkler connected to the end of the garden hose? no. Just restriction to efficient flow.
am not a fan on diesel engines, but damn that sounds goood
How does that sound good ? I can’t hear shit 😂
@@omarkhodr3373what do you drive?
I love the diesel sound
Yep! My wife is usually driving it though, and has to try to answer questions about it, lol.
Removing the muffler was easy, just cut it off, have an exhaust place weld in pipe and tips, with supports. It cost me just less than $400. I didn't add any cats, I just left the ones that were there in place. I have run it on Biodiesel- 5%, 10%, 20%, and one time I added about a half tank of 100% (at about $7 a gallon!). Runs great on that stuff, much less smoke. Never on WVO.
Holy shit that sounds badass
Verry nice !!!! I have a 2000 Jetta TDI, 2.5'' strait pipe and just had a potentiometer to the fuel pump ! Result: 174HP & 284 Lbs torque and the worst thing, it cost me 5$ for the pot and the switch !
REALY nice sound for you V10 TDI !!!!!!!!!! Max
Just so you know a channel called R3@L!TY used this video. Not sure if you gave permission or not or even care after all these years. Just letting you know.
Nice Touareg! I love the raw finish on those tailpipes.
Beautiful beast. Lot of appreciation. The experience would be quite amazing.
bet that 250 in the back had its tail in between its legs the whole duration of this video
Bet that 250 has a Diesel engine that's twice as loud and would eat a tdi.
bakerboy293 I bet this TDI could out pull that 250 easily.
bakerboy293 yeah that 250 is a diesel if its the 6.0 its got a chance but that tdi would walk all over a 7.3
The Red Shoto
Um, no. The 250 is heavier/has more traction and more torque than the TDI...
Nick Motsarsky There are videos of a stock VW out pulling a modded ford.
it is the stock bumper, i just removed the cutout filler for the trailer hitch, trimmed some of the inner bumper, and filled the stock cutouts. the turbos provide back pressure, they muffle a ton of the sound as well. it isn't even that loud until i get on it under load.
Nice, that's winter mixture too. Probably quite a bit better in the summer.
Maybe one of the best sounding diesels ever?
I have been entertaining the idea... I have the factory air suspension set to 35mm lower than stock- I could set it to a lot higher. It raises up almost 7" when I set it to offroad height. Thing is, it has to have at least 18" wheelsto clear the brakes, and 18x9 or so wheels are tough to find in 5x130. I have a big lifted truck already anyway. :)
0:17 oil?
ChiTuSai No, water. I had just washed it, in spraying it down, some got into the exhaust.
ChiTuSai i think it's water with a lot of soot in it
Thought the same thing at first I was like holy shit
Sounds like a monster!
you need to make a vid of this thing accelerating! tdi exhausts come to life when you are moving lol
@VeeDubTDI2 I tested out to see if I could get good audio from mounting the camera outside and driving, it sounded pretty good. I'll make a video in the daylight and post it later.
I hear good things about Rocketchip, but I can't send my ecu's away- this and my work truck are my wife and I's only vehicles. She commutes in this, can't have it down for too long.
Yep, still has all four cats. Thinking about removing the two that come after the 02 sensor.
23 mixed. Just took a trip to Whistler, BC and got 28.95 mpg on the way up.
@jlcool007 K&N air filters
6000k HID headlights
Votex rear spoiler
Before exhaust it dyno’d 316 whp, 566 ft-lb tq,
350 mm Brembo brakes, Brembo 6 piston front calipers, 4 piston rears
@jlcool007 The stock exhaust holes were filled with material from another bumper, then we just removed the small piece that covers where the hitch would exit the center. Trimmed a bit of metal to match the bumper opening and painted it all when I had the lowers done. The guy did a great job, you can't tell the stock opening were ever there.
This is the only VW I would ever own.
The Ford Super Duty in the back round shits its pants every time the Touareg starts up!!!
well I think one thing hurting that is that theyre unibody or monocoque easiest way to explain it is theres a small subframe up front, and one at rear. the body itself makes up the centre segment. it CAN be done just pricy as hell to do it properly. these vehicles are not cheap to repair. although easy to acquire second hand. the 10 cylinder diesel here isa rare bird in the states. . I am envious of Mr bergs vvehicle. normally a straight piped diesel or gasoline is loud as hell this is nice
@alexcheetah79 Thanks man. I just recorded a video tonight from a camera mounted to the license plate in back. There are no visuals, so I don't think I will post it. I'll do another in the daylight. Under load it sounds better.
@M3iscool Sure- I have seen straight piped Passat and Jetta TDIs before. The turbo quiets them down so much they don't get very loud. Go to a good exhaust shop, mine cost less than $400 total.
@MooperSC Are you aware that soot is nothing but unburnt diesel (biodiesel in this case) and it goes straight back to the ground therefor it does not harm the atmosphere. Diesels are far more economical than gassers. Please do not insult anyone if you have no idea what you're talking about :).
turbo sounds amazing
They only brought about 390 of them to America in '04, none in '05, then sold them again in 2006-2008. Not sure how many. The '08s go for mid $30's sometimes, still.
What a amazing machine!! I would give anything for my tiny jetta tdi to sound like that ... I think i know what my next car is!!!!
that sounds insane, now i want one
@jlcool007 The piping goes the same place as stock did until the muffler, so it doesn't hang down at all. It might tuck up higher than stock, actually. It doesn't see much more than logging roads and snow during winter anyway.
Flyby/exterior mounted cam videos are gonna happen soon.
Its just weird to see a vw blow smoke.
Lane Braddock notta false 1
+Lane Braddock It is a diesel
+Lane Braddock lol not at all.. look up TDI rolling coal on youtube, you'll have tons of results
It's carbon. Falls out of the sky in less than a minute. Becomes part of all the carbon on the ground. Or you can breathe all the noxious fumes produced by burning gasoline and ethanol that no one sees, but are worse than diesel.
Not *that* weird.. Volkswagen has been making diesels in their cars since the 70s (in America, anyways..)
If you really want better V0 sound and performance get rid of the primary cats and resonators. and make a complete straight pipes!
It would sound amazing
Sounds strong!!
sounds really good I have a crd jeep and will never own a gas truck/suv again
this SUV I want so bad I love the sound
when i hit the jackpot this is what im buying.... my god it sounds amazing.
Nice. Sounds better than my straight piped 300D.
Robert S but your 300d will go on for ever
I have a few questions for ya.
1. What wheels are those?
2. Is the car reliable? I’d really like to get one but I’ve heard they are expensive to fix because you have to drop the motor to get to different components.
3. Would you recommend a v10 Touareg to someone looking to buy one?
That exhaust sounds awesome! That custom rear bumper really looks great!
Thanks
sweet machine
Who did the work? It looks great. Just bought a loaded 04 with 25000miles in factory condition. I am NOT exaggerating. It is spotless. Looking for ways to personalize it. Yours is great looking.
Thing sounds like a guttural air raid siren getting onto the highway.
Not at all... just means his car is modded and isnt running at its "best". The car is basically dumping more diesel that it can actually burn at that time, once the turbo is fully spooled it generally doesnt smoke nearly as much, if at all, but besides that it's perfectly alright, mine rolls all kinds of coal :D
That sounds nasty and industrial I love it
Just filled it up for about $80. Diesel is around $3.45 a gallon here now.
Black smoke is normal but excessive means blocked air filter or in need of an oil change. This one is just typical diesel smoke
That is freaking awesome! Makes me want to go trade in My LR3 tomorrow. looks great! great wheel and tire package.
@cliffjump4fun Mid 6's to 60 mph, 1/4 mile in 14.5 @ about 100 mph stock IIRC. They weigh about 5800 lbs.
@THEDLO88 Yeah, I am on vortex and a bunch of other forums because I go back so far with modified VW's. I don't have a build thread, but I was thinking of starting one so I have a consolidated place of pics and info on all the maintenance I have done in addition to mods. Probably put it on vortex even though the Touareg forum is pretty dead.
Sick!!
Sounds really good.
@Mr330d Yeah, there just isn't a lot of chip tuning available locally. The closest guy is in Portland. I could have gotten Dahlback's tune, but IIRC it was over $1200... I will someday. Was hoping Revo would release a file but that isn't going to happen.
Mega sound, good job!
This video is 13 years old. No way in hell this thing still runs, given the unreliability and complexity of this engine.
They are starting to buy more and more. Those that do have them, love them and never go back to gas cars.
sounds fantastic.
@jlcool007 22x9.5 Rial Daytona Race 3 piece wheels
285/35-ZR22 Nitto tires
3.5” stainless steel straight piped exhaust, no mufflers, 4.5” stainless steel Magnaflow exhaust tips
Painted lowers, custom rear bumper with center exit exhaust
Factory air ride, sport mode lowered 35mm through VAG-Com program over laptop computer (comfort, off road, extra height still stock)
Why am I being inundated with VW Toe-rag ads in 2024?
Whats the after upgrade Dyno'd numbers?? Those tyres are too good, mind sharing its spec and details or website link will be helpful
Never have re-dyno'd it. Someday. Tires/wheels in the video are 22x9.5 Rial Daytona Race. et54, I think. I now run 22x10 Rinspeed replica wheels. Same tires, 285/35-22. I have had Nitto, General, and currently Nexen Roadian HP's. Got these becasue they were all season and inexpensive. Touaregs eat tires like crazy, so I'd rather spend less, lol.
Cool bro thanks!
If you don't mind sharing how much was the basic maintenance on this? Oil changes? Brakes? This and that? How would you rate your time with it overall? I'm looking at an 04 right now. I don't really see the V10's around much anymore.
DIY oil changes weren't hard as the filter is right there on top, but they cost $100, $120. They'd last 8-10k though. LOTS of oil, haha. Brakes weren't bad, front rotors and pads were under $200, I think all four corners just pads were like $150. I used stoptech ones. The other stuff is what bugged me. The generator harness going bad, the driveshaft issue, peeling interior buttons. I never had a warranty on mine, ever. But I wouldn't recommend doing the same, lol.
found a used one with a turbo actuator that needs to be replaced have you ever had issues with yours? would you still recommend it? also what sort of fuel eco do you get on the highway? thanks man this truck sounds mint
I just purchased a 2004 v10 with 162k miles from the original owners and drove it 1000 miles home at avg. 75mph. I achieved 23 on the trip home and it drove like a dream
@THEDLO88 The bumper is a reworked stock one. When I had the lowers painted, I had them fill the stock cutouts. I removed the part that filled where the trailer hitch went, trimmed about 1/2" of metal just inside, and that was it. And yeah, definitely hard to find wheels that aren't the same ones you always see on these. Might switch to some Rotiforms soon though.
@green68chevy I left mine there, I am using all the stock support points except for the one at the rear bumper. I think they used some BMW X5 mounts for that.
@SickTwistedFrq A bodyshop in Tacoma did the bumper, the lowers. And my friends shop did the exhaust. NS Performance in Auburn, WA.
Probably the cleanest and most awesome v10 i have ever seen. What rims are those?
We'll see how loud it will get- I am deleting all four cats and doing Unitronic's Stage 1+ tune as soon as I finish rebuilding the transmission.
@KrazyKuul111 ??? Was just gonna say that yeah, he digs it- he likes anything diesel. That Ford is gone, he bought an '11 Ram with a Cummins. Beautiful truck.
I never understood why diesel vehicles in the US smoke tremendously. Here in Europe the V10 TDI which do no smoke.
Even my old engine 1.8 TurboDiesel from 1999 Ford Mondeo (famous motor to be "dirty" because low pressure injection) smoke much less than that.
Probably your Diesel Fuel is very crappy. And so it is normal that diesel cars have a bad reputation in your country.
You can find endless videos of diesels in Europe smoking. Diesels that have been tuned smoke at least a little to be in safe AFR's.
no i had 3 diesel cars and they bought smokes, i ame from belguim...
LOL...NO BUDDY U CAN NOT SAY UR DIESELS ARE BETTER....ALL I CAN SAY IS CUMMINS! THAT THE BEST DIESEL ENGINE NEXT TO CAT..BUT CUMMINS IS MORE IN EVERYDAY TRUCKS..AND UR CATS DO SMOKE...MAYBE UR EMMISSIONS ARE MORE CONTROLLED DID U EVER THINK OF THAT.
every diesel car smokes not wen its new engine...
France just banned diesels, so they have a worse rep in Europe than here in the states. the fuel thing is probably true though
I've seen pics of your car floating on the VW forums, do you by any chance have a build thread showing the work? This was exactly what i was thinking of doing, and yours looks clean, so i certainly know what I'm doing lol.
beautiful sound
Great sound man, is that a hand built pipe or kit you can buy ?
this is my dream carrrrrrrrr
I want this in a rabbit caddy. Time for a full tubular frame.
My goodness! Petrol power is great an all. But a big ass diesel such as this is just menacing
Thats how a diesel works when you rev it like crazy, diesel power
Sounds much better than stock one. But in any way v8 sound better :)
@sjberg40 and dont forget that soot falls back to earth, unlike his ozone eating gasser. when will people ever learn to not bash on diesel videos. theres a reason diesels are coming back
this motor would be awsome stuffed in a wrangler with a manuel transmission
I remember when I first heard of this v10 diesel... i forgot about it soon though since it's a VW, don't take that as an insult though. I remember now how impressed I was with it, yours sounds amazing. I'd give a nut for that.
It would sound way better if you gave it a turbo back exhaust and delete the dpf, I did that to my golf tdi and the difference in sound was night and day
@green68chevy 22x9.5 Rial Daytona Race. One of my favorite wheels, didn't know they sold them this big (had only seen them in 18's and 19's.
I know it's not but It so sounds like another diesel truck idling in the background as if this is gas motor revving it's engine. :P
Awesome vehicle awesome sound by the way!
Zinientek it's a diesel v10 :D
you ever take a video of the exhaust after you cut out the secondary cats? i just did the same to my exhaust, now i want to cut out the secondary cats, just wanting to k now now it would sounds. btw nice ride, mine sounds basically the same...i love it
Sounds pretty good actually, Wtf.
Sounds like a jet engine. AWESOME
sounds sick man!!!
I know you sold it but, where did you get the body kit for it and get you mufflers done?
Nice ride!
+Russell Simmonds Just painted the lower parts of it. All stock front bumper, stock sides, mildly customized rear bumper.
BRUTAL !!!!!
@sjberg40 have you considered re-mapping it ?? not a lot of extra bhp but more torque than you could shake a stick at
Yes, I need to do a rolling video, full throttle fly-by, etc.
Where did you buy that bumper?!? love the look you have there, good choice on wheels too, i find it hard to find the right wheels for this car.
I´m looking forward !
Sounds powerfull, me like!
lol, thanks man. I give up replying to that question/comment.
