The 2013 VGX weren't even televised, but nice try there. The 2013 VGX (and most of the Spike VGA's up until that point) was marred by low production value and utter lack of enthusiasm for the most part - at least McHale brought that to the show. Joel was the best. He was a highlight of the entire show. We want a gaming show about gaming, this means titles like "Shroud of the Avatar" from Richard Garriott himself. Where is this interview? Bring veteran game developers to talk about game design and concepts. Get them more obscure developers and bring them to the spotlight to show how diverse gaming can be. I can't believe I'm saying this but the VGA awards is actually more entertaining than this, and it incorporated every negative point Joel tried to call out from. This would be the first and last VGX I will pay attention to. Unless I heard they've corrected this problem for next year, I won't be viewing it any longer. A total waste and opportunity and I hope Geoff rectifies this problem next time around.
Michael Mike The whole ceremony was a joke because the "gaming" industry is a fucking joke. Nominated games were all AAA "cinematic" QTE crap, with no soul or substance in them. I always thought this guy used to be a guy who just yelled and got mad because I never gave him a chance and every time I heard about him he was taking a huge stance against something very strongly. But after watching this video I am extremely surprised how passionate he feels for gaming and how passionate he is for making the gaming community a better place. Can't wait to sub and becoming a fan.

The winter chapter alone in TLOU was better than anything I had played this year. The structure, storytelling and pacing was perfect. Just incredible. Something I and alot of gamers will remember for years to come.

When really, it is one of the best multiplayer experiences I have ever taken part in. I worry that the game companies wanted VGX to be a joke and not truly give game awards. Once awards are given to game titles the customer knows which ones are of higher quality and will choose to ignore the non-awarded titles. Instead they make the game ratings and the whole show a joke, get payed a lot by GTA's Rockstar and show previews of all titles making it a gigantic game commercial that each game company can agree on. What Angry Joe negotiated sounds better to us gamers who watched the VGX, but turning it into a giant buy all games commercial was music to the game companies' ears.

I say the gaming side of TGWTG (including spoony or any other willing past members), the AVGN, Machinima, RT, egoraptor, and Mega 64 should get together and do their own video game awards. Look if RT could get a convention, then I'm sure you all combined could put something together, and honestly, we'd have the potential for the best internet crossover event of all time.

I'm with Joe when it comes to Oscar-like categories for games. One thing that you don't really see a lot of people talk about, including reviewers, is the games' writing and script. It's easy to talk about Lollipop Chainsaw, for example, as an arcade beat-em-up, but no one ever talks about its amusing writing and excellent delivery of said writing.
As a writer myself, it really annoys me that people don't talk about the writing more. Story is my favorite part of the game. For instance, I loved Alan Wake because the story was well written, executed, and had terrific voice actors.

The multiplatform-in-console-category awards thing infuriates me, especially since EVERY site, be it IGN or Gamespot or anyone else, will include multiplatform titles in their categories, which shoves out well-deserving exclusives.

After watching the 2010 VGA video and this back to back, I gotta say Joe and Geoff have my respect. Joe's passion and vision for a better VGA, and in some places Geoff's, really make the whole fight between them tragic. Even with how heated things got, Joe always gave real advice on where to improve and gave credit to the shows many improvements. This video ends with telling us how they met up and reconciled before the 2013 show's disgraceful display, and that really speaks to both of their characters. Geoff's speech about how NMS (regardless of how it played out in the future) inspired him and showed what his hope for the show really was. This was truly sincere and commendable. 2013 was the last showing for the VGA's ever, but I think people like Joe could have helped Geoff really reach that vision they both shared for a better award show for gamers. I wish them the best and hope that one day we will have that award show.
I won't lie, I usually hate Angry Joe stuff, just not my speed, but he killed it here. Exactly what needed to be said about this. Granted, it's six months later now and no one cares anymore, I hope they listen to fans this year.
The thing that annoys me now is gaming isn't some niche thing anymore, The celebrity cameos are completely unnecessary in 2013. They used to be there as a way to make gaming look bigger and more important by associating it with big Hollywood stars but gaming is as big as Hollywood (if not bigger) these days, the celeb tie ins just aren't necessary anymore. Gaming won over the public at large years ago and the need to try and make it seem important by associating it with other entertainment media is gone. Just get people from within the gaming scene to host or like joe said get celebrities who are actually interested in gaming. That said the VGA/VGX have always been a joke and after this years train wreck I wouldn't be surprised if very few gaming developers/publishers want anything to do with this show or concept anymore. The awards are meaningless and all anyone really cares about is the ad's which can easily be viewed on youtube anyway. The only companies who actually might get any sort of bump from this is the smaller devs/publishers and after this year I have a feeling that's about all they are going to be able to bring in.
I think you deserve to host those awards Joe, you can go up there do an angry review, that would be Boss. But it seems like gamers have no audience appeal, someone who isn't a gamer would get bored and change the channel, or stop watching the internet video, honestly when it comes to videogames, gamers are the only ones who care, they need to understand that before we get decent products...

For musical appearance they could have had, Hudson Mohawke, flying lotus, Dr.Dre/snoop dog or Kendrick Lamar since their very known artist and have huge hit songs that many people would know that are in the game. Have a live audience even if its pretty small. Have Jack black or a known celeb who loves gaming host the show. and have influential people in entertainment in gaming, from RUclips or other gaming sites. HAVE THE GAMERS VOTE!!!!!! And make more categories. That should be enough for at least two hours, also if you don't have much to show cut it down on the time. I rather have 1 or 2 hours of amazing, then 2 or 3 hours of boring wtf moments. VGX was such a fail that even when X play still existed, it did a better job with their small award show for 30 minutes.

Joe, I have a serious question for you: why bother saving the Spike game awards? The Spike awards have ALWAYS been terrible and meaningless. Why save that? Tyler the Creators lyrics were absolutely horrible. Hate all you want but, this sort of thing is why I stopped listening to rap and listen to rock. Are there horrible rock songs? Yes. But it's less common in rock than in modern day rap. I don't even know what people are thinking these days when they like people that talk about raping pregnant women and calling it a threesome. He was the outsider, a person that's not really into games, that came into the "gaming" crowd and saw all the ass-licking, commercialization, cheesiness, casualization, he saw it. And he cringed. That's why he was sarcastic, why he was constantly trying to ask uncomfortable questions and expose the bullshit pouring out of these greedy developer's mouths. I want more, more of that, more Joel, Conen O'Brian, people that aren't "inside" and can give their honest opinions.

Angry Joe here nailed it. The VGX really needs to shutdown it's bullshit tirade if it plans to take itself more seriously. We want a gaming show about gaming, this means titles like "Shroud of the Avatar" from Richard Garriott himself. Where is this interview? Bring veteran game developers to talk about game design and concepts. Get them more obscure developers and bring them to the spotlight to show how diverse gaming can be. I can't believe I'm saying this but the VGA awards is actually more entertaining than this, and it incorporated every negative point Joel tried to call out from.
This would be the first and last VGX I will pay attention to. Unless I heard they've corrected this problem for next year, I won't be viewing it any longer. A total waste and opportunity and I hope Geoff rectifies this problem next time around.

The whole ceremony was a joke because the "gaming" industry is a fucking joke. Nominated games were all AAA "cinematic" QTE crap, with no soul or substance in them. Joel saw that, Joel has to deal with much more advanced bullshit in TV and movie industry every day, so seeing the low-tier bullshit that is sold to 16-yo "target demographic" of AAA crap was hilarious to him.

The winter chapter alone in TLOU was better than anything I had played this year. The structure, storytelling and pacing was perfect. Just incredible. Something I and alot of gamers will remember for years to come.

I worry that the game companies wanted VGX to be a joke and not truly give game awards. Once awards are given to game titles the customer knows which ones are of higher quality and will choose to ignore the non-awarded titles. Instead they make the game ratings and the whole show a joke, get payed a lot by GTA's Rockstar and show previews of all titles making it a gigantic game commercial that each game company can agree on. What Angry Joe negotiated sounds better to us gamers who watched the VGX, but turning it into a giant buy all games commercial was music to the game companies' ears.

I'm with Joe when it comes to Oscar-like categories for games. One thing that you don't really see a lot of people talk about, including reviewers, is the games' writing and script. It's easy to talk about Lollipop Chainsaw, for example, as an arcade beat-em-up, but no one ever talks about its amusing writing and excellent delivery of said writing.
As a writer myself, it really annoys me that people don't talk about the writing more. Story is my favorite part of the game. For instance, I loved Alan Wake because the story was well written, executed, and had terrific voice actors.

After watching the 2010 VGA video and this back to back, I gotta say Joe and Geoff have my respect. Joe's passion and vision for a better VGA, and in some places Geoff's, really make the whole fight between them tragic.
Even with how heated things got, Joe always gave real advice on where to improve and gave credit to the shows many improvements. This video ends with telling us how they met up and reconciled before the 2013 show's disgraceful display, and that really speaks to both of their characters. Geoff's speech about how NMS (regardless of how it played out in the future) inspired him and showed what his hope for the show really was. This was truly sincere and commendable.
2013 was the last showing for the VGA's ever, but I think people like Joe could have helped Geoff really reach that vision they both shared for a better award show for gamers. I wish them the best and hope that one day we will have that award show.
I won't lie, I usually hate Angry Joe stuff, just not my speed, but he killed it here. Exactly what needed to be said about this. Granted, it's six months later now and no one cares anymore, I hope they listen to fans this year.

The thing that annoys me now is gaming isn't some niche thing anymore, The celebrity cameos are completely unnecessary in 2013. They used to be there as a way to make gaming look bigger and more important by associating it with big Hollywood stars but gaming is as big as Hollywood (if not bigger) these days, the celeb tie ins just aren't necessary anymore. Gaming won over the public at large years ago and the need to try and make it seem important by associating it with other entertainment media is gone. Just get people from within the gaming scene to host or like joe said get celebrities who are actually interested in gaming.
That said the VGA/VGX have always been a joke and after this years train wreck I wouldn't be surprised if very few gaming developers/publishers want anything to do with this show or concept anymore. The awards are meaningless and all anyone really cares about is the ad's which can easily be viewed on youtube anyway. The only companies who actually might get any sort of bump from this is the smaller devs/publishers and after this year I have a feeling that's about all they are going to be able to bring in.

Have Jack black or a known celeb who loves gaming host the show. and have influential people in entertainment in gaming, from RUclips or other gaming sites. HAVE THE GAMERS VOTE!!!!!! And make more categories. That should be enough for at least two hours, also if you don't have much to show cut it down on the time. I rather have 1 or 2 hours of amazing, then 2 or 3 hours of boring wtf moments. VGX was such a fail that even when X play still existed, it did a better job with their small award show for 30 minutes.

Tyler the Creators lyrics were absolutely horrible. Hate all you want but, this sort of thing is why I stopped listening to rap and listen to rock. Are there horrible rock songs? Yes. But it's less common in rock than in modern day rap. I don't even know what people are thinking these days when they like people that talk about raping pregnant women and calling it a threesome. CoreyBlauvelt certainly it won't make you think it's a good message. It's not and tyler's not advocating it or anything like that. The song is telling a story, more character development. In all his albums it's a little story. This song was written from (I'm pretty sure) the antagonist who is a crazy guy and says crazy shit
