Well done mate. You're learning along the way which is hard. If you still have problems with Bergen rash tape your shoulders and back before training. Also make sure you have a good dry bag inside for all your kit. Also don't overdo the running with weight especially if you're not conditioned for it. Run less, speed march/ fast walk more and if you can get out on the hills. The specificity of that training will save you all sorts of grief. Most of all enjoy the process. The route is very doable. People just build it up into something it's not. It's as hard as you make it. Comfortable, well broken in, footgear is key. Happy feet, happy dude....
Dude, mad respect. You must know that the guys who do this for real, that is the guys trying out for SAS, are maybe 1/2 your age. Incredible. Way to go.
I remember that feeling, getting rid of the old civvy backpacks after ruining your shoulders. I had the same gamchanger feeling, I'd gone through about 3 backpacks before I got a military backpack. It's still going strong today and is an absolute beast of Bergan. I try and not run on my rucks, I guess I should man up lol. But yes, nothing feels better than a loaded march in the mountains or hills. The views, the accomplishments, the self reliance and the whole learning experience is what we should all be doing. Very best of luck on your march around Beacons - that place is a favourite. A hill walkers dream in teletubbie land. I really enjoyed your video 💪
I like to roll up the extra length of my backpack straps and put an elastic around them. That allows you to adjust them easily if needed and keeps them short and less annoying. They also make magnetic clips for the hydration pack hose. You put one part on your chest strap and one on the hose and they clip together. Let’s you get the hose quicker and also points the end up so it won’t possibly leak. I use ones made by Osprey but I’m sure other companies must make them.
Great video. Well done Ryan. I love my DG3, and I’m running about 6 miles in it at the moment. Slowly building up the mileage & elevation. I’m also running in my boots to get used to them. Keep up the great videos, and see you on the FD start line!
Sounds like the pack is a much better fit. From my experience backpacking (not running, only hiking, but with a similar pack) you do want almost all the weight on your hips, with the shoulders mostly holding it close (pulling back, not down). Not sure if your pack has 'load-lifter' straps that attach at the tops of the shoulder straps, but if so, you may want to get them tight to pull the top in over you. I do recall you mentioning loading heavy items towards the top, but I'd think you want them midway up, and as close to your back as possible. Make sure you break in your boots, and I'd recommend an inner pair of very thin 'liner' socks inside a thicker wool hiking sock to reduce friction. Good luck and looking forward to following your progress!
A big sigh of relief from me. When conscription comes up, they'll surely take you first with that rucksack rather than me with my tesco bag for life. 😂
Go Ryan, as an infantry vet, I know this TAB. It’s tough, train the body and the mind. There’s also Paras 10 series if you can fit one in as training, all good fun. My advice is ramp up the weight/ distance, no raw recruit goes straight in to SAS selection.
Hi Ryan. Good effort. I reckon the best rucking pack would be one with a long back length, so all the weight is taken by your hips, not your shoulders. Good luck with your endeavours. 😊
Great video, and respect for taking on the challenge. As someone who TABs a lot. You should aim to TAB (walk very fast) on the inclines and flats, and shuffle on the declines. You can shuffle on some flats too, if you are feeling good. You will likely not be running/shuffling much on the actual Fan Dance, apart from the turn around and the finish. So practicing the very fast walking is key. You will have some very burning shin muscles when you first start, but they'll strengthen in time.
Nice pack march mate. Looks like a great bag and it will only get better over the next few tabs/marches as it wears in and you fix up the small niggles like that loose strap. Also Happy Birthday for the other day and I hope you enjoy the Zwift Play. I ordered one last week but because I am in Australia I had to do some package forwarding shenanigans and I am still waiting for delivery. The main reason I am getting the play is for the virtual shifting as my jet black Volt V2 doesn't come with shifting.
Hi Ryan, kudos/👍 to you taking on yet another challenge to test yourself. My hat off to you. Do you plan on doing a review on the backpack? 🤔 I was wondering if you would say that most of the weight was carried on your hips, when carrying the 40-45lbs of the backpack? 🤔 I find your journey to fitness/health quite inspiring.
Thanks Dazza. I appreciate your comment. The backpack isn't cheap and not easy to get to the UK so for that reason I wasn't going to do a review but I'd say the load is very evenly distributed, it has a back cage and it ensures the weight isn't all on my shoulders.
Nice one mate! 10 miles looks far enough to be honest - what sort of distance will you work up to in training for this one? Glad the new pack is a winner!
Good effort mate, have you got a decent pair of boots? Be careful tabbing with trainers you can go over on your ankle easily and they won’t give you the support that boots do.
45lb is a lot to carry. How do the Fan Dance organizers ensure you have all that weight throughout the entire race? If the inspection is at the beginning what stops you from starting with a bunch of water and getting rid of it immediately after you start? If it is at the end you could get away similarly by using some stones or logs.
Trust I suppose, the type of people that take this on don't cheat the system as it's disrespectful. Plus they do spot checks throughout the event I believe. In my view, it's like signing up for a marathon and getting a Uber 100m before the finish line. Pointless. There is also a version you can run without the pack if that's your thing.
Great training and great pack, how much does pack weigh on its own out of interest? 20kg is not a small amount , at work 15kg is the h&s adviso for single person lift 😅 have u been doing any weight training to strengthen the body ?
The military 6 or 7 Ps haha. Good luck with your training (rather you than me). Is there a step machine in the local gym that would help with elevation training until you can get to the hills?
I've got a plan to attempt The Yorkshire Three Peaks with it as a tester soon. I'd rather do it outdoors, I'm not a fan of gym training for stuff like this but I take your point. I do need to get the elevation training in.
It was bad enough for me doing the old CFT, Combat Fitness Test, 10 miles in 2 hours with 35 Lbs of weight including weapon. Followed by a 100 yard firemans carry of someone of your own size with their gear on THEN into the gas chamber with CS gas. Character building at its finest.
Thanks for watching. It's my first venture into the world of route marching. I'm sure even you had basic training. I might give something bigger and harder a go in the future. 👍
There are huge benefits to route marching or rucking. I'd prefer to do this than squats in the Gym. I also burn more calories than a simple run over the same distance. I spent 25+ years eating, drinking and sitting on the sofa, that does more damage than strength training with a new challenge. Thanks for watching and thanks for vocalising your opinion.
@@Dropthehat-dj1qu of course I do. Maybe check out some of my other videos too. Probably don't watch the 100k in a HEATWAVE one if you didn't like this one though. 😬
