Hey coach! I'd been blaming the referees for giving 'incorrect' warnings for the long range hooks I threw with my palm facing myself. Nobody told me it was wrong, even I felt like my knuckles had the impact. Now I finally get the whole thing! I'm from a city from South India where boxing is not mainstream yet. But I still believe that I can make it big. I never had the right guidance in terms of boxing technique. I'm glad that I'm getting it through your channel now. Keep up the good work!
@@bubonicduck1262 Other example that explains it really well. Look up Sainchai (Muay Thai fighter). 1 of his signature moves is a cartwheel kick, touching the mat with your glove. According to the rules, it is a foul. A lot of western fighting-promoters like the flashy stuff so they "allow" it by just not addressing it. Saenchai is a big name, he brings in the money. Its unfair but yea.
By the way ever since I've studied your videos. Some serious boxers at my health club have definitely been impressed by the improved technique, thank you.
You are the number one boxing coach I have seen on the internet Frand Sands and most of my studies on boxing for my free style stand-up fighting system are based from the way you analysed the techniques and tactics of boxing fir our convenience. Thanks coach for your great contribution and I'll always support your amazing channel and follow your advice to guide my student's in the correct path in boxing.
Your video has really been helpful to me , sir. I had a fight yesterday and was warned by the referee for the same.I have been wondering since my match about what went wrong. Looks like I have the answer now. Thanks a ton.
Tuesday First of November Two Thousand And Twenty-Two. 16.34pm. Dear Coach. Mr Sands. How are you? I hope you are well. Three very interesting punches. You throw the punches very well. Were, you a junior Champion at School? Thank you very much for the lesson. Yours Sincerely The Bull of Lewisham. 🌹
Good-evening Mr Sands. When you say "drop, the forearm" when delivering the short close hook, what do you mean? Please can you describe it, for me. Thank you. The Bull of Lewisham.
Great stuff, Would love a more in depth look at the starting position of hook I have a lot of shoulder pain throwing them on the bag. I think I’m throwing them too high of a position with my shoulder but I do rotate my hips too.
i had no idea about the punch foul, could anybody explain why it's considered a foul? Is it dangerous? It seems like it would cause more damage to the person throwing than the other guy.
Once again thanks for sharing this quick tips with us. The short hook to the body is so deceiving... what about fake a punch to attack with another one? Like a short left hook to the body that travels to opponent jaw/menton becoming more like an uppercut? Greetings from Spain.
hi sir i want to ask a question about this foul hook punch... is this rule in every professional boxing or a rules in amateur boxing?... because i see a lot of hooks in professional boxing that uses hooks with palm facing the face and no one saying its foul unless it hits the back of the head...
Wish I lived in Liverpool. There are literally no good clubs where I live. At least not for over 30's. Great vid. Interesting about the foul, never knew that.
A hook is an elbow with the arm open. First master elbows. Then open your arm to a 90 degree angle or smaller. Anything much beyond that is a haymaker.
It feels natural for me to use a horizontal fist for body shots and vertical for the head. The hand seems to naturally turn over the higher one punches (I'm only a beginner). Thanks again for the info!
First and I Appreciate all the informative information that your channel offers. Ok. In regards to the rule ... This may be true however never in forced in professional boxing..
+pete carrol No problem Pete. Agree by the way, the pro code and amateur code are very different and this stuff is let go in the pros. These vids are really aimed at amateurs and white collar guys.
I feel long range punch with palm facing toward you is more powerf right? And when triying to throw right long range hook, I feel only the knuckle of my pointy and middle finger made contact, did I throw correctly?
For 15 years (in Muay Thai, mind you) I was always taught to never throw the hook palm down unless it’s thrown in short range only. Long range hook thrown palm down will put the pinky and ring finger knuckles at higher risk of damage. This is the first time learning that it is actually a foul in boxing. The more you know.....
THanks Fran as ever! Please can you explain why the hook with the palm facing towards the boxer is a foul ? You are still landing with knuckles though? Please explain. Many thanks.
+Nick D If their head is closer than the length of your extended upper arm away then it won't be a foul. Beyond that and you are more likely to land with the inside of the glove and the ref could well call a foul shot (slap).
Thanks for your replies Fran. I guess with the long hook you have to be conscious of keeping the fist with the thumb pointing up & the fingers facing yourself. It requires a slight "flare of the elbow" upwards & flexing of the wrist inwards. I guess..... Thanks again. Please keep posting.
Hi Frank, If have Orthodox stand I personally don't like throwing hooks with my right cross, specialty to the body, unless I square up my body legs a little, but I like to teach to throw the right as across the whole time. good stuff though Frankie 👍 do you have a Facebook page?
Hey Acen, thanks for the insight. The right hook does carry some risk, but then again doesn't everything! :-) Yes I have a myboxingcoach facebook page, there's a link of the YT channel.
+Jay Chong Well spotted Jay. The shape of the bag can result in pain when using this shot, but not when it lands against a jaw...strange but true. Drop the power on the bag and use the palm in/shorter range shot for power.
+NikeSoccerTennis Hey there, thanks for the question. In the amateurs the rules are more strict. My guess is that your forearm is dropping just below parallel and the guy's head is a little closer than you think. Well done on the KOs though, top man :-)
is the hook with palm facing inward illegal cuz it's effective or it's bad technique? If it's like judo where the most effective techniques are illegal, i want to learn and practice what is foul.
Wow, I wasn't aware of that foul, but since I'm not going by the rules, at least I don't have to worry about the fouls. It is good to know though. Thanks.
I enjoy these videos but I must say, watch almost any fight in history and hooks have always been thrown both with palm down and turned through as he shows as well as palm facing the thrower. I have studied film for 15 years of all eras and at least in the pros hooks are thrown both ways with no punishment for the latter.
Depends on the ref. IF the forearm is parallel to the ground then the ref may consider it a slap. Some may not of course, but if you know why that particular ref is warning you then you can adjust.
You can’t say “ you are teaching fault point “ . You should say “ it’s fault point in Amateur boxing competition , not in Professional boxing competition “
+b zanon Yes I know. Point I make is that a referee in the amateur ring may issue a warning for incorrect punching. If the boxer is not aware that this is what the ref is pointing out then he may not be able to make adjustments in order to avoid point deductions.
Understood, and I agree, not a foul in the pros. The amateur system does matter in the pros though. Without the amateur system you have no pros. Boxers learn their skills in the amateurs and perfect their fighting technique in the pros.
+Vasquimho Because the palm of your hand will hit the opponent as opposed to the knuckle part of the glove - the ref can call a 'slap'. If you drop the forearm from parallel and keep the palm toward you then the punch will land correctly as it will if you keep the forearm parallel and the palm down. That make sense?
+Vasquimho The palm of the gloved hand is pretty uneven and can cause skin damage...cuts etc. The knuckle part of the glove is also classed as the scoring. This is from the rule book (classed as a foul): 6.1.3 - Hitting with open glove, the inside of the glove, wrist or side of the hand;
+pete carrol Sorry Pete, not wrong. My job as a coach is train people and be conscious of the rules. This rule is taken from the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) Technical Rule Book and is classed as a foul: 6.1.3 - Hitting with open glove, the inside of the glove, wrist or side of the hand. Saying 'Watch any boxing match' doesn't really cut it for me.

Is it still a foul or
I thought it was only illegal to punch below the belt or into the rear/back of your opponent.

I had not heard that before either... Kind of curious about that one...
It's incorrect punching, a ref would view it as a 'slap'. In the days of lace up gloves I guess that the trim could increase the risk of cuts.

It could be amateur boxing, but yeah I agree I remember seeing a video of Roy jones teaching the hook thrown palm turned
Does anyone know why that was ruled as a foul hook. I'm a karate guy and that is considered ok and a safer version to through in our eyes.
Poor guy winded after five punches. 😆lol
Myboxingcoach.com very good. I'd like to thanks.
I don't understand why the palm inwards is a foul. As long as you're not slapping and the knuckles hit it's legal
Depends on the ref. IF the forearm is parallel to the ground then the ref may consider it a slap. Some may not of course, but if you know why that particular ref is warning you then you can adjust.
Does that foul get recognized internationally?
Yes, but some referees may be less stringent than others
You can’t say “ you are teaching fault point “ .
You should say “ it’s fault point in Amateur boxing competition , not in Professional boxing competition “
So is it illegal still or can i keep doing it im having my first fight in a month or so
RMPG Loco in amateur Boxing Can be fault or not ( depends on referee) . In profesional boxing it’s legal .
Queensbury rules
+Rz Khan :-) Indeed!
90% of the pros land hooks exactly the way you say it's illegal...
it's called american hook vs european hook...
+b zanon Yes I know. Point I make is that a referee in the amateur ring may issue a warning for incorrect punching. If the boxer is not aware that this is what the ref is pointing out then he may not be able to make adjustments in order to avoid point deductions.
@@myboxingcoach I'm going to see if there's any videos online of boxers being penalized for it
to think that there is even a warning for throwing that hook is absurd.
That’s one uppercut and two hooks
It's 3 hooks, the one you are a calling an uppercut is often called a shovel hook.
It is not a foul in professional nearly all left hooked throw it that way because it has better power...the amateur system doesn't matter in the pros

depends on the coach
its actually 102 seconds if u wanna get technical
