Ive just recently started to go back and watch these. You can really see how addiction runs in families. Its like how Alan can be seen when no ones looking and swallow a fist full of drugs but then say how bad it is that AJ drinks. He seems to be unaware of how similar he and AJ truly are. Addictive personalities certainly run in families and I think that the writers & actors done a wonderful job of portraying it here.
He doesn’t drink because of what happened to Jason or because of the lies. He was an alcoholic before the accident. Those things just provided him with a continuing excuse.
Its great how the mid 90's Alan/Monica storylines ran together back to back. Breast cancer, Emily and Paige, breast reconstruction, AJ's issues, the accident. Alan's surgery. GH's financial issues. The Dorman trial/murder. Life started to emotionally crush Alan, yet no one saw it. Monica did not notice him taking pain pills whenever he was stressed for nearly two years?! Brenda noticed him taking them. Emily, although a kid, saw something was up and understood her dad better than the adults.
I hated how aj was treated. Ned covered for aj bc he didnt want him arrested but was so viscious to him about it. Alan literally said to jason that " ah will never have my love " how does a father say that about his own child. Alan imo caused all ajs problems by favoring Jason. People can say oh plz just an excuse but that is so damaging to not love ur own son & to treat the other like hes perfection. Imagine how that must feel. Their was a watch scene up on yt I dont know if it's still up but alan gave jason q his gold watch as a tradition . Edward gave it to him. Jason said give it to aj , hes ur first born son. Alan said he doesnt deserve it. Jason said " dont you get it dad , the way u treat aj & me is why he screws up all the time " very sad. It happens in families all the time . A parent for whatever reason favors one child over the other. It really can do serious damage to ur esteem. Like if ur own parent picks this other child to favor than their must be something wrong with u. The problem lies with the parent but it still hurts & u can live down to those expectations. I think it was bc jason was the baby of the family & monica at first hated baby jason. The scenes are there. Alan had to fight extra hard for jason to be accepted bc his mom died & jason had nowhere to go as a 2 year old. So maybe alan having to defend jasons place in the house & monica did obviously wind up loving little Jason but maybe those years of jason not being accepted & losing his bio mom is where the favoritism started. Plus monica also told alan Rick webber was ajs dad so alan hated ajs existence & maybe that damaged Alan's bond to him forever. Also jason was the baby of their family & the youngest gets favored just by being the baby.
Exactly, despite Jason bad decision of becoming a hit man, the quatermain ( except lila and Emily ) are to blame of Aj alcoholism and Jason brain damage in the first place.
Yeah, it's a crime. The family has had such a rich history on the show and yet it seems the writers just use them in hostage situations or to kill them during the sweeps. This was and should be still a front burning story kind of family. If you care about the Q's, join Daytime Confidential's Save the Quartermaines campaign.
AJ was already an alcoholic before the accident. That was the cause of the accident. Telling the truth was not going to keep him from drinking. Or maybe it would. He would have had to go cold turkey when he went to prison. Keisha, as usual, misses the point. She is really judgmental for someone who didn’t see what was right in front of her.
Damn Keesha was annoying and if SK stayed on as AJ I don't think they would have wrote him so bad. SK had a way to make you feel for AJ despite the bad things he has done.
This Alan-Kevin dialogue about alcoholism is on target and helpful right now.

That's addiction in its truest form and it's one bitter pill to swallow
Maybe Jason did not get his urge to cover up things from Sonny after all. Maybe it is just an ingrown trait from the Quartermaines. Irony isn’t it.
Such profound Alan and Kevin scenes by great actors
What were they thinking casting Billy Warlock as AJ

I love that Jason and AJ talked it out. And I loved how real it was with the guilt. And I loved how AJ separates Jason Q from Jason Morgan.

I never could stand Keesha. She is so self righteous.

The ugly side of denial
