Same with the demo version of PRELUDE TO REPULSION that's on the At Death's Door II comp. Far superior to the Breeding the Spawn album, same with that title track re recorded for Pierced.

I love the minimal production version of suffo. Like a lot of death metal, later albums are suffocated by extreme compression and tortured by excessive production. Not that it's all good,, but I'd like to hear this garage band, practicing in the school gym, under-produced, raw version of later albums. It sounds like they had 2000.00 bucks and were like can we record a demo with this in two days? Effigy of the Forgotten was released 5 months later. drums are all miced separate and every drum beat has all the life crushed out of it.
Amazing that back in the day you had to spend 2000 bucks for a demo like this and now you can produce something better than this in your Ipad or pc almost for free
@@evilevie87 Yeah, they do. to be fair, this was the early days of extreme metal and learning to produce it. I can understand the impulse to tame and control it to make it articulate, but it just went wrong. The aggressive raw spirit of the music can get lost in over production and that really is obvious in the case of suffocation. I like the philosophy of a lot of black metal to reject that. Brings us back toward punk roots.

This is a time treasure and also my favorite band from N.Y. Seen them on 4 different tours. Great times from "92 to "97" seeing them and Cannibal Corpse. N.Y. Rules in Extreme Death .
Back in 2004 or so I bought this cd randomly. I already liked death metal but didn't know a whole lot about the genre beyond CC, Deicide, Morbid Angel etc. Man, this was quite the introduction to this legendary band. Started a love story immediately.
I have one from Nuclear Blast Germany in 1990, it's 45 RPM 12 inch, when I first got it I had never heard of Suffocation, the cover is what sold me on it, I didn't notice the speed and had it playing at 33RPM, so heavy, so severe, every beat intense, brutally slow thinking 'they must use heavy effects on the vocals, sounds cool though...'. Then I got Effigy Of the Forgotten and it had some of the same song titles but didn't sound the same at all and that's when I figured it out. Got it signed when I met them about 12 years ago, they're cool people in person.
Wish this album had a lot more songs. At least 10.... Its my fave and their best album for me. The vocals were at their most vicious on this album and i love how the guitars sound so roomy. It just has a badass atmosphere. Pierced is next up for me then despise then sun. The newer shit is cool but just does nothing for me. I've tried many times to like it. Dont know what it is about it but its boring but not bad.
I really don't understand what everyone infatuation with these old ass mixes that don't do the music justice at all. I hate people like that just as much as the over polished plastic sounding worshippers
