Bronze B Metal Coating Application & Patina

- This is a hydrocal (plaster) casting that we finished using Bronze B metal coating. The "B" metal coating is an acrylic base with a high bronze content for finishing sculpture. Because of the real bronze powder in the coating it reacts to patinas when wet. In this video we use the Tiffany green metal coating to get a rich, blue-green look.

Leilani Uy, yes The Metal Coatings work on resin sculptures. Normally we recommend using the Prime It along with it if it is a smooth resin cast but a simple scratch test will tell you if the Metal Coatings will bond to the resin on their own.
This technique works over just about any paintable surface provided it is clean and free of oil. When properly applied, both B & C coatings hold up very well outside.

@dianacerda Yes. This is a water based product so it works over alot of different surfaces. Anything that can be painted with an acrylic paint can be finished with the "B" coating.
Yes! Shellac is a great surface to work over.
If you are REALLY careful you can use a soft Scotch Brite pad and carefully polish the high points.

@Dach101 I have tried that but it winds up looking smudged rather than exposing a clear bronze underneath.
Thanks for the video - I used your products, followed the steps and like the results, although when I applied the clear coat I lost a bit more of the patina than I wanted. I found using a sponge For applying bronze b was the best texture. For the black wax at the end, I was wondering if I could substitute black shoe polish for a similar effect? Many Thanks.
Did you use the EF version of Clear Guard? That is the best for keeping those colors as they are prior to clear coat. Black shoe polish will work for recessed areas but is not a great overall protective layer.

Instead of applying the additional bronze on the raised surfaces, could you have buffed off the patina, to the underlying paint?
You could but the B version of the Metal Coating isn't made for that. If you used the Metal Coating C version, then yes that is perfectly fine.

Is it possible to wipe the patena off the high points just after it is applied ? of would that take off your underpainting? The results you get with the patena are very impressive.
Can you apply this Bronze coat inside the mould then gel coat over?
In my opinion, it is easier to use a release agent like usual, clean it off and then coat the bronze over the resin.
Thanks for sharing, I understand that the Black Wax will dry and never come off, I have a cement statue that will see some time during the day in the sun, will the Black Wax be affected by the heat of the sun? kind of like candle wax?
Never come off is not entirely true, everything wears over time. That being said, our wax is not like candle wax in the sense that it melts off but it wears more like the wax on your car; eventually it just isn't there and needs to be reapplied. Normally what I recommend in this case is to use the Black Wax as desired and then do a Clear Wax over the top. That way, you can maintain the clear wax coat instead of the color.

Does the Bronze B metal coating have actual bronze powder in it? If not would adding actual bronze powder allow for a light rubbing with fine steel wool to bring out some extra shine bronze look in a few of the high points and textures or does the coating have enough tenacity to hold most of the powder on the piece? I'm thinking of how that works with cold cast bronze with bronze powder. Thanks
I would not add more metal powder to it. If you want to highlight and use some steel wool, I would use the Metal Coating C version. That would allow you to do that!
I am making 3D prints in PLA of ancient Roman and Greek sculptures. Would the Bronze B and patinas work on this material? Do you ship to the UK, and if so what would the shipping cost? Many thanks - it looks like an amazing product!
I have not tried it on PLA though from what I hear PLA is a little smooth. You may need to scuff the surface a bit or use the Prime It in conjunction with the Metal Coatings to get a good bond.

Looks great, is this product durable enough to use on concrete pottery, outside?
The Metal Coatings are a very durable product and should be fine outside on concrete pottery if they bond properly to the piece.
How do you refinish a bronze statue with a badly damaged/discolored brown finish?
Would it work to wipe the patina off with a cloth just after applying so that the high spots would be wiped clean and the deep areas will turn green?
I want to bronze some large fish-hooks for art and need to simplify steps if possible to do many at a time.
FlymasterA Boise In that case, you might find that the places the patina was applied and then pulled off would be a duller brown color because the reaction had started. For that kind of application, use our Metal Coating C version and you can burnish it back after it dries with steel wool.

I have different poses of 3 small child lifesize bronzes around my outdoor swimming pool. They all need a little love. One in particular has aged pretty badly. They all are rather green. Can I use the wax to bring back the bronze patatina to them once again? I could text some photos if it would help.

so you cant steel wool Bronze B?
It doesn't work as well as with the C coatings. It more just scratches the patina off rather than doing a light burnish.

Can you use this on natural water-based clay?
Yes but it needs to dry completely first. I also recommend using the Prime It frist.
Can this last in the rain and Sun?
Yes, a clear coat will help lock it in and make it last longer.

JERRY DAGNA It would be more beneficial to start on cleaned up cement. Otherwise, you have to rely on the previous paint keeping the adhesion. For a cement pond sculpture you should use the Prime It, Metal Coating, Ever Clear, and Metal Wax combination.
do you have to do anything special to apply these coatings to glass?
+Kim Thomas Sandblasting the glass will help create a tooth for the products to adhere to. I would also advise using the Prime It though you can do test samples to see if that is completely necessary after sandblasting.

This was a hydrocal (plaster) casting. Metal Coatings work on many different surfaces, some surfaces you will need the Prime It to help with adhesion.
will the oxidizer work on my bronze boat fittings?
Tiffany Green works on real bronze metal but you would need to get any clear coat that is on there off to get it to work.
can you use bronze c like bronze b?
Debbie Williams The Metal Coating C will patina but the great part of it is that it allows you to polish the coating. Metal Coating B does not polish as well.

I accidently ordered some Clear Guard that isn't in a spray can. Does it brush on nicely or will the brush strokes show? Can I use Kyrlon or some other thing as an alternative?
Great question, it works best sprayed. Krylon usually will be OK but it isn't the most durable coating. You can usually find something like the crown sprayer: www.sculptnouveau.com/Details.cfm?ProdID=94&category=10 at a local hardware store and that would work.
can you use the material on concrete outside statue?
+Lou Buf Yes you can but it is a good idea to seal the concrete with a concrete sealer before moving forward with the Prime It and Metal Coatings.
How about if there was paint on concrete statue?Can i Just go over the paint or do i have to strip paint off?
You could potentially (do a small test to ensure compatibility) go right over the top of the existing paint but be sure to get off any loose areas so that you have the best adhesion for the Metal Coating and Prime It as possible.

Will your Bronze B react to Liver of Sulfur after it has already dried?
It might, I have not tried with Liver. It will with the green patinas like Light Green and Tiffany Green so I would say depending on your dilution of Liver of Sulfur I think it would.
