  • Natural resources are our open spaces, preserves, forests, ecosystems, wildlife, our waterways. Basically anything that is nature. Natural resources and Planning go hand in hand. Planners will have to work as a priority around protecting natural resources for the most part. This is that natural resources are not fragmented, destroyed or developed on. However, this varies throughout the world.
Natural resources are usually protected through zoning, ordinances, environmental statues. Some jurisdictions will zone certain lands as open space preserves, not allowing developments to occur on these lands. Some ordinances can be certain states or jurisdictions have an ordinance on what sorts of trees can’t be cut down. Some environmental statutes could be the designation of national parks or forests or protection of certain wildlife.
Natural resources are important because of the greater part they play in our ecosystems throughout the world. But also, keep in mind that the depletion or destruction of our natural resources can lead to Tragedy of the Commons.
From a planning perspective, I explain what natural resources are, and how urban planning affects natural resources.
