John Carpenter 90's movies ranked;
1. Escape From L.A.
2. Vampires
3. In The Mouth Of Madness
4. Memoirs Of An Invisible Man
5. Village Of The Damned
Of the 90s/00s Carpenter movies I've seen, I've genuinely enjoyed most of them. Them being Memoirs Of An Invisible Man (enjoyable Hitchcockian romantic comedy thriller with some clever effects), Body Bags (enjoyable if light Creepshow-style anthology movie), In The Mouth Of Madness (very H.P. Lovecraft inspired meta-horror with some memorable visuals) and Vampires (schlocky but fun vampire road movie with plenty of violence). I haven't seen Escape From L.A. or Ghosts Of Mars, which do look pretty bad, and Village of the Damned was very disappointing.
Although his heyday was definitely the 70s and 80s, some of the films from that era are a little weak, such as Starman and The Fog. The thing that impresses me about Carpenter is whether he's making a dud or a classic he still imbues his films with a certain look, sound and atmosphere that is very appealing and distinctive. He makes his own movies, but unlike someone like Tim Burton, he didn't just repeat himself over and over. Most of his movies are distinctly him but also unique and enjoyable in their own way.
