OK, so I received it and after getting a full charge on the batt. this thing is a MONSTER. The incredible light sensitivity, the vibrant and true colors, and basically the software that controls this machine are outrageous. The buttons and knobs aren't of professional grade, but the zoom -focus wheel on the lens (digital, so endless in either direction) is a real joy to use. I stopped auto-focus immediately, because it is so much more fun to finger this ring thing. I use the zoom lever from under the shutter switch. - it's okay....old fashioned The center image that pops up temporarily in the view finder while you manually focus shows with magnified light and a Neon frizz outline what is perfectly sharp. (most of the time) The time from your ugly face hitting the viewfinder and back to the LCD: really short The Leica lens really makes the camera great, the 2.8 bumps off pretty quick, but the 4.0 is there to stay. At 400 mm you can get steady videos and pics, even after 7pm. I have only scratched the surface for this babe, but in terms of bang for the buck !!!!? ? $500 on Ebay, factory refurbed and shipped with card and pouch, 90 day warranteeee
Thanks for the review! I've watched quite a few now, but your review made the most sense and really helped solidify my decision on this as a good backup for my dslr.
There is a special feature which will only work on the Intelligent Auto Mode, go to Menu and link to IA+ right next to IA. This will increase it to 800mm as opposed to 400mm on all other modes.
Hi Lon, Found more info: "As we'll see, the Panasonic FZ1000's HDMI output supports the use of an external recorder, but not an external monitor while recording video. Therein lies the heart of the confusion and erroneous reports about the FZ1000's HDMI capability: The FZ1000 can output a clean, 4:2:2 digital video signal, or record 4:2:0 video onto an internal memory card, but can't do both at the same time." www.imaging-resource.com/news/2014/07/31/the-panasonic-fz1000-can-output-clean-hdmi-video So the limitation seems to be doing both, but since there are HDMI splinters, why not split, one to a recorder (hopefully a PC can be a recorder?) and the other to a monitor? Although since it has a LCD display on the cam, the lack of separate monitor does not seem a big deal. I plan on going HDMI to SDI to PC with SDI card. That 30 minute video limit is a bummer. Do you think if the FZ-1000 is used thru HDMI to a recorder that the 30 min limit goes away? My objective is both live and or recorded video production. Thanks again for the great reviews.
the ELMARIT lens on it IS RAZOR SHARP and the camera is really smooth , used it on my world trip from 2011 from 2014 on and off great for low light ALLAN
Man you do some good presentation in your video. Swift presentation and also good with the live camera angle switching during the demonstration. Liked and subbed.
Would you recommend this as a video camera? I also really like the Sony a77II because I guess it has an even better autofocus but the FZ1000 has 4k and Slowmo and costs half the price. Any opinions?
I got the g7. It's similar to this but the lens is tiny compared to this thing. This one seems handy too but I'm sticking to the little baby camera for now. It's good quality and super compact.
Not having parefocal AF and the noise from the sensor is the biggest downsides on this camera BUT for wildlife there is no competition, even i zoom 1184mm and digital zoom 2360mm give picture quality that although not real sharp 4K is better than 1920x1080P HD.
Just purchased this camera today. I will use it to shoot some wildlife, so how does it compare with the FZ200? I know the FZ1000 has a larger sensor(1 inch) so would that compensate for the 4.0 at full zoom compared to the constant 2.8 on the FZ200?
Lon, thanks for a really informative review. I am thinking about this one for my travel camera. The zoom on the deer...was that hand held or on a tripod?
I appreciate your detailed and very informative review, even though I already use the FZ1000. And there is something else, that makes watching your videos very comfortable. You are talking very fast but its no problem for me to understand every word for your pronunciation is extremly clear. Thank you for that, too ;-)
Hi how are you? Have u used a FZ70 too? Just wondering with day light and cloudy days .. Will these two camera produce Big difference photos pls? Thanks a lot! Regards, J
Gidday from Australia mate! :-) Watched this video the other night - Just got myself an FZ1000 (STILL working out how to BEST set it up!) LOL HOW do YOU upload your 4K files to youtube? AS IS or render them to 1080 (or less) FIRST via Vegas (or what have you)? Cheers, Steve
+Lon Seidman Yes, I discovered that in my upload tests yesterday - direct upload (unedited) of the 4k had best results, but naturally BIG files; when I re-sampled in Vegas, quality went down but so did filesize (i.e., only 12mb per 6 seconds of video)...
Hi Lon, First love your videos. You said you can not get HDMI out live in video mode. That would be big deal to me, as thinking of live greenscreen with it. Shoot in 1080 and reduce to 720 for smooth greenscreen edges. HDMI to SDI converter to PC Saw this on another review: While not directly related to the EVF or LCD, this seems like as good a place as any to mention the FZ1000's HDMI output capability. Of course, it supports standard 1080 output (both progressive and interlaced), but it can also output still images at 4K resolution if you're lucky enough to have a HDMI 1.4a-compliant TV or monitor capable of displaying that. We have a 28" 4K monitor here at IRHQ, and I have to admit that there's maybe something to this 4K thing after all, unlike the 3D TV fiasco. Looking at high-res still images on a 4K monitor is really an entirely different experience than viewing at standard 1,920 x 1,080. So is it a case of 2k can be HDMI out but in 4K mode HDMI out can not be done?
What did you use to down sample the 5k video to 1080p ? Was it in camera, provided software or a third party software ? Do you have a recommendation for free pc software that will do this effectively?
Mr Lon Seidman. I have Lumix FZ1000. I have explorer problem. Can you check your camera and see you have same problem like I have. I shoot 4K video at 25fps my shutter speed is 1/50 my Apture is F11 my explorer meter read almost +3. when I shoot out side with normal sunny weather. Is to high explorer I can't crank it down.Pleased help Thanks.
Hi Lon, I am interested in this budget 4k camera. I'm wondering if it's possible to output to an HDMI monitor for framing/setup while recording simultaneously in 4k. I heard it only allows HDMI out while it is not recording while recording there is no image output. Thanks
Hi, I'm thinking of this camera for Christmas. I am hoping to use it for RUclips so I'm most interested in the 4K. I am not too bothered about the image quality as long as it's not horrible. I am hoping this will last me quite a few years. I won't need to zoom much so that's not a big bother. Can anyone tell me if this is a good choice and how long would it last if it doesn't get damaged. Thanks
I'm so glad I watched your review and asked! I almost pre-ordered it. I never use the lumix kit lenses for that reason. I needed something similar but with constant aperture or stay at f2.8 to around at least half the max focal length. Thanks so much Lon and keep up the great work!
A few years ago I bought the Sony HX300 but was disappointed with the grainy viewfinder, the lack of movement available of the lcd and the feeble low light ability. It seems with this camera that all those problems seem to be solved.
Dear Mr.Lon, Is it possible to mirror through HDMI output (camera display not turned off while outputting on monitor through HDMI cable)? Thank you in advance.
Not sure but I would imagine yes.. I do that with mine and its a cheap camera lol (using my monitor as a display when filming helps me to see if it's in focus a LOT better!)
Hi Lon, advise please, I'll try to be brief. I'm looking for a great point and shoot plus, will this model fit the bill. I've a Nikon d7100 that's been in my cupboard for 8months it's very heavy, complicated (well for this mere female anyhow Lol) and was so expensive with the lens am afraid to take it out, so was wanting something I can actually use to take great pics.... Thank you very much
+Lon Seidman Hi Lon, thanks. In brief I have a 50mm and 24mm lens do you think I'm best persevering with the Nikon than the lumix or even the Sony RX10?? advice please 🙏

Hi I have some questions for anyone that can help. I am thinking about getting this camera for my RUclips channel and I want to check if it would be fine for everything I am about to list. As I said I would use it for 4k RUclips and the quality if fine. I would be filming mostly me talking, maybe with other people. There will be times I talk and around me will be a detailed set. I will film hardly any sports if any with it. The zoom would not be used much but it would be good if it had a quick focus when zoomed in but it's not needed. In terms of still images I wouldn't be doing too much but I will still be doing some and it would be great if it focuses on every detail and I can choose whether it focuses in the back or fore ground. A feature that is nice but not needed is wifi and Bluetooth. The final thing I want to know is: does the camera make much noise when filming. My current camera makes quite a loud focusing noise and that is one of the main reasons why I'm thinking of another camera. Thanks for reading and if you know any answer please leave a reply. Thanks.
+Lon Seidman thanks. I'm looking bad at old comments. Can't remember if I already said thanks but thanks anyway easpically as it must be hard to reply with a channel your size.

Think about how limited they were back in the day and yet they made good films. It's less about the camera and more about the story IMO.
ahah gps? really?, the camera cant set min shutter speed in manual mode, neither it can do exposure compensation.. gps should be the least of your concerns
well , a6000 is a better camera as it has a bigger sensor, aps-c vs 1" but , technology wise you have way more in fz1000. But then again, getting the lens equivalent of fz1000 for the a6000 would be super expensive. you may lack the wide angle aspect on fz1000 , if you do landscape you might feel like 25mm is not wide enough. 2 completely different products , depends on your need and use. but noyou can just get a a6400 and get the best of both world. fz1000 aged pretty well that being said 5 years after release.
Jeremy D You also get Adobe lightroom (that's $150) and a three yaer warrantee. So in the end you're paying just $250 for the logo and two years extra warrantee. I think it's totally worth it.
Including Lightroom instead of spending money on some stripped down proprietary software was a good move by Leica, and I agree, that's worth something. I didn't know about the extra standard warranty; that's smart too. The way things like this work is that they're either fine unless dropped, or they're bad from the start, so it was a no-brainer for Leica.
Thinking more on it though, I think what I'll do is get a gently-used Panasonic and knock another $150 off the price. Then, we're talking about a $600 Panasonic vs. $1150 Leica.
+Deborah Joan Hi Deborah, If you don't have lens noise you are very lucky, many reviewers comment on this noise. When I attach my panasonic mic. and video someone speaking in a quite room the background noise sounds like a cement mixer. I bought my FZ1000 in December 2014, perhaps panasonic have solved the problem.
Desmond Graham I misunderstood the issue. .I thought you meant the camera was making motor noise the whole time you were using it. I haven’t made a video with anyone speaking I use mine for landscape and wildlife photography- outside..so that would explain the lack of motor noise.I am terribly sorry you are hearing a sound like a cement mixer. That’s terrible.
Lon, you are always my go to for camera reviews as you get right to the features and explain them well.

what about the video quality? and it's slow motion feature?
Fantastic review the best yet and i've watched a lot of reviews on this camera....i think you've sold me on it.
Thanks a lot !!!...thanks too you mention 4K photo mode....almost ALL videos never talk about that...now , in 2020 the FZ1000 is a goal at 500$ !!!

Great review. I need info how to use new features with v2 firmware up date.
Good review, well presented . . .

very cool review. Thanks for that : )
when i am filming in 4k having problems to get clear shot
when you are filming in 4k can you use flickr on
i cant dont now why
can you help my to get got settings filming 4k on sunny days
en to get sharp videos
you dont need the flicker on, as the camera gives you the ability to set the shutter speed during and before recording in a 3840X2160 format, unlike the other modes, which offer 1080p video recording, and makes using the camera simpler. henceforth why you only get the option to change shutter speed regardlessly in the advanced video mode.
@@Megatholis can you use advanced video mode in 1080?
cool explanation
FZ1000 can ae-lock in video mode please? Can't find this info.
Thanks. No reference about AE-LOCK in movie mode.
You don't need AEL when shooting videos in manual mode since you have full control over shutter speed, aperture and ISO, meaning the exposure will stay consistent (the same) regardless of what you point your camera at :-)
***** thanks, this is right

I heard that with the latest firmware, you finally get 4096 x 2160 in the FZ1000. Is this true?
thats okl. thanks for replying
does it come with remote control?

beautiful beast i swear specs = real shit !
i just checked flickr
I thinh I would spend the extra money and get the Leica V-Lux, just because of that naughty logo...
+GEORGE ZARIFIS ...but the V-Lux costs $400 more. That's a lot for a logo!
Jeremy D
You also get Adobe lightroom (that's $150) and a three yaer warrantee.
Jeremy D
Maybe you could get a used Leica (if you can find one)...
How about the fz1000 vs the lx100

hi
The motor noise from this camera is unacceptable and will ruin indoor videos.
Desmond Graham What motor noise?Mine doesn’t make any noise.
+Deborah Joan
Hi Deborah,
If you don't have lens noise you are very lucky, many reviewers comment on this noise.
@@maharg1942 are you saying Everytime you shoot video you have constant noise from the fz1000?
