WHY YOU'RE A TARGET FOR THIEVES. even if you're not on social media STORYTIME: 3 ATTEMPTED ROBBERIES

- An interesting topic!! Carrying a designer watch, bag, jewellery…. It can naturally make you a target. There’s a thought that social media can make you more of a target for thieves, but I’m of the opinion that whilst it can drawer attention… actually ANYONE out in public can be a target (social media or not)
What do you think?

Thirty odd years ago I had a job interview in a city centre office and when I left, the older gentleman that conducted my interview commented on my necklace and said just to tuck it under the neckline of my top so it wasn’t visible as there had recently been some “unscrupulous characters loitering close by ”. I remarked it wasn’t real gold just costume but as he said, the robbers wouldn’t know that and he didn’t want me getting hurt just for a necklace. He would probably be amazed at how much luxury is flaunted on the streets these days! (Yes, I got the job and yes, he was a genuinely lovely man.)
Awwww that’s very nice Person
That was very nice of him - to warn you.
He sounds like a sweetheart.
I went on a job interview and the guy interviewing me asked why I wasn’t wearing jewelry. I said that I didn’t think it was appropriate. My house was robbed two weeks later.
@@laurenmyers401 Damn.. i can only guess who did it...
It’s not just luxury goods that’s vulnerable to be taken, it’s your children, pets or even yourself
VERY true 😣xx
So true! Lady Gaga’s dog was kidnapped. The dog walker got shot during the kidnapping 😢
True. I don't think as a society we are strict enough with the sub humans that are doing these crimes.
@@JanGlow what!! .. are you kidding me ... people do that .. my goodness
I was thinking same thing about children!!!😭
I have a very simple tip that actually worked for me several times. If I am passing by a bad location or If I have to use public transport with my expensive bags, I always carry a spare tote bag with me and before I go near that destination, I put my expensive handbag inside the tote bag. People won't even glance at your bag because it looks like a grocery bag.
Primark shopping bags are ideal for that.
Thank you
I do exactly the same 😉
That’s a smart idea. Thank you.
If someone is following you make sure to stay in a crowded area then turn around and shout so everyone can hear “stop following me” or “I don’t know you why are you following me”. Take the anonymity away from the stalker and draws people’s attention to them. Also another tip is to pretend someone has called you and then say “hey, I’m almost there, oh you can see me? I think I see you too” then start waving. Makes it seems like you’re not on your own
great tip!
Done that, confronted someone loudly to stop following me! They stopped as many eyes were on them, it does work!! I don't wear my luxury purses(carry a old Liz Claiborne) while walking down a street or on trains or buses, save them for when I go out places in my bf's car, yes stinks to not be able to use them everyday, but so many scumbags are just waiting to rob you & to get physically harmed or worse while someone steals your bag is just not worth it!!
Sophie, thank you for sharing.
Another point to highlight: I don't understand people who get out of Harrods with plenty of shopping bags and get into the tube.... Seriously, if you spent that amount of money take a taxi home and be safe...
Amen!
Totally. I've seen this so many times. Its the "drunk with money" brain that makes people do stupid things (and sometimes buy stupid things also!)
You have a Lamborghini??!!!! Wow!
I’ve heard two burglaries from my friends and they were both done by their 'friends' who knew their collections, their home address even the entrance access code, and knew they were not at home... so actually, be aware of those jealous friends.
So often it is.
How terrible!
yep, commented this too
and service workers like electric, boiler, gas pipe
Oh yes for sure. Sometimes it may not even be a friend with malicious intent, just a friend commenting on something valuable/designer and their acquaintance (secret thief) gets enough info to know where to go or get invited to the next house party by proxy. I found out one of my friends was a kleptomaniac and after several years of things gone missing and a confrontation, I went no contact. Just not worth it.
@@mismamari. A month before I was to have major surgery, I had two women insisting on watering my plants while I was in hospital. One of them knew I depended on prescribed drugs (for legit reasons) and the other was always commenting on how lovely my modest home looked and furtively observed what jewelry I wore as well as commenting on how expensive my skin care routine must be.
They often asked when the date of the op was and I kept on deflecting the question. Eventually, I was in and out of hospital and neither of them were aware of it. I didn't return their calls and went absolutely No Contact.
Beware of people who are way too keen to help you.
Also Sophie made a good point. If being followed NEVER go to your work or home. Best place to go is the police station...
or a cafe or petrol station to call police
I did that once and it worked like a charm. He kept on driving...
Learned this from my college mate (at the time’s) mother who was being followed…
Anyone is a target. Long before social media, I was a “poor” graduate student with no luxury or even contemporary bags, no jewelry etc, and our house was robbed while we were out. Crime can happen to anyone at anytime. Once I graduated I’ve always had a German Shepherd. I feel pretty secure with him around.
I always felt so safe with my big Bernese Mountain Dog but sadly he passed away in april.:( Now I only have my little Chihuahua girl.^^
Our home was robbed & it's the most intrusive feeling, I felt violated. Even more heartbreaking was finding out our neighbor kid (15 yo boy) was the one stealing from us. We let this kid come over all the time (he didn't have a dad & my husband is like a big kid himself) we even trusted him to babysit our son & then we started missing things....
@@loloholmes2793 that's horrible, so sorry to hear this. How did you handle it?
Agreed, I have insta and I show my items, but the average thief in the street isn’t going to rob me because they’ve seen my insta.
@@user-lt3qf3dh1n definitely! It’s so scary!
Being in NYC these days is very unsafe. After the pandemic people have gone crazy and crime has gone up so much. Especially in the subways. My daughter came home last Thursday using Amtrak(train) from Boston in business class early in the morning and someone tried to take her bag. She said she felt her leg getting tugged on because the bag strap was wrapped her leg and on the floor in front of her. So, she pull it back forcible and said loudly, "it's not worth it". You never know when something can happen so you always have to make sure you are prepared and be vigilant. Stay safe everyone. Thanks for the message Sophie.💜🌼
I am much more careful and mindful of my surroundings on subway platforms and subways than I used to be. New York is not safe post pandemic
the whole rationale of welfare was to reduce crime so they've got no excuse
Oh my God I hope she is well!!!
That's what you get when you have a mayor who encourages criminal behavior and hatred toward the police!
@@itsbritneybisch8552 So right. And that moron thinks everything is fine.
Always be alert, great tip for protecting yourself when your alone instead of pepper spray, carry a small bottle of spray paint (they even do ones that can go on keys). Instead of using pepper spray, use spray paint to aim for their face, as it’s hard to get off and will be able to be spotted by police. Hope that helps xx
making the attacker angry can make them worse....
This is awesome and will also blind them so you can get away.
Good ides
@@seabreeze4559 Not always. A robber has a higher chance of bugging off rather than hurting you since would they rather go to jail for attempted theft or for attempted theft AND assault?
I use bleach ;)
For handbags don’t keep the authenticity cards/documents in the pockets! Easier for thieves to sell on and profit from your items.
Or in their boxes in your wardrobe, heaven forbid they should break in your home.
Absolutely. Preferably they should be hidden in another room so that burglars don’t have time to go looking for them as well. Especially as you will need them for insurance.
I held off buying luxe bags because I didn't want to be a target for mugging. Eventually I bought luxe bags but even then I still am very cognizant on the environment I'll be wearing my bags to. 🙈🙈 Sometimes luxe brings unwanted attn.
For some reason with my bags I never felt insecure… but with jewellery I feel terrified!
I love the way you tell stories about things that have happened to you, whether it be about potential crime or a ghost story. You just have a way of saying things that makes everything fascinating.
She's a great story teller.
totally agree! I was listening with bated breath!!
Sophie everything you said we are always telling our young daughter. Here are some more..1- when you are coming late at night before pulling into your garage, pass your house, drive a block or two more and go around before coming inside your house, sometimes slow down like if you are stopping at another Neighbor’s house, see if someone was following you or if you notice anything strange in your house. 2- break your times routines, stop at a café or place and delay your time coming home. 3- don’t always take the same routes to go to work or comeback home. 4- depending of where I am going or if stock in traffic, I put my bag against my body on the side of my car door. 5- pls while leaving your house, do not open your garage and realize you forgot something inside your house, and just walk back to get it. Wait until your garage door is close again before walking in to get what you forgot. I am glad you are safe and you followed your gut!
All very good tips! It's just really sad that we're now living in a world like this...
Thank you and god bless 🙏🏽💕
Great points. So easy to be distracted with a baby.
And, when you drive into your garage, look back and forth between your side mirrors... it can catch someone sneaking into your garage as the door comes down. If that happened, I would hit the horn and the garage door open at the same time so I coud back out fast!
@@ashfitrn so true omg, god bless you and your baby ❤️ @design organize, great tip ty for sharing! @sexyalleycat YW ❤️🙏🏼 @Peggy true! Very sad we now need to take so much precautions to be safe. I have cameras all over my house, everywhere, inside and out and I also have an alarm system;) stay safe everyone!
Also if your someone who likes nice things and also keeps your house nicely be careful with who you invite over. Too many times people will invite whoever or friends of friends to their home and you don't know who is taking notes of your home. I NEVER have a open door policey...no thank you.
I totally agree. We have a unique home, but I am very careful to whom I provide home tours.
Same! Even my teenagers always have friends over . Never know who their friends know. We built a "hang out " room for them above the garage. LOL, they don't need to know what mom and dad have in the house. I also tell my teens not to brag about wealth, what they have, and what kind of bags mom has! Never know who is listening. It isn't always strangers that rob people.
This is spot on. Everyone is not to be trusted ❤️
I have locks on my dressing room doors
People and partys
You never know.
Even though our housekeeper has worked for us for many years, she will bring one or two people with her as helpers. Immediately after they leave, I check each and every one of my windows to make sure they are still locked.
The sad thing is this can happen to anyone even without wearing anything expensive or expensive looking. I carry pepper spray everywhere, I try to never walk alone.
Unfortunately pepper spray is illegal in all states in Australia (Except maybe for certain exceptions in Western Australia)... Same with taser.
@@sunshinesmile94 American here. I feel very sorry for you. I hope something changes so you are safer while going out and about🙏🏼. I carry mace, and at times a pocket 🔪, and all my bags are cross body with a zipper or other form of lock. Cause, ladies. You. Never. Know. 👁👄👁.
@@sunshinesmile94 Really? I didin´t know that, I´am from Europe and it is pretty common here, we also got some in college welcome pack... and in my hometown people carry it in case they come across a bear as well, which in some places happen almost daily... I am still more scared of humans tho
@@Krachela oh wow where do you live in Europe ? I'm from France and here it's illegal as well.
A couple months ago in Paris, a guy posted on Twitter he got robbed a 1700€ Louis Vuitton bag which was purchased for his birthday treat. He parked his belongings in a safer place but he was followed by thieves who broke his car.
The reactions and quotes to his tweet were harsh : it was his fault and he should not have purchased a bag in a context of a crisis.
What I conclude is people have no fear stealing anyone, rich or not. A teenager killed Pop Smoke for a Rolex watch. An influencer just got robbed in Paris, just like Kim Kardashian in 2015. Another not-so famous influencer in the North of France got robbed while she was away in vacations.
People have no desire (or dont see the point) of working and try to get rich the easiest possible. And if they have to harm somebody for it, they would do it
3 words, GPS Dog collar. Remove the straps and Hide one in your most expensive bags. Keep one charged by the door and put them in your bags as you leave. Hide one in your car. Yes you will have to keep them charged and Hide them well. But if you want a Snowballs chance in hell to retrieve your belongings this is the way.
Great idea..thanks!
apple air tags would work better for this scenario.
Or just get insurance 🙄
@@Oddesteidolon Yes. Your right that will work too plus a samsung tag, or a tile, or Google nest tag, or a t-mobile tag. There's smartrac, chipolo, gego luggage trackers, jiobit kids trackers and lots more. The tech is out there. People just have to start being proactive.
@@zuzanna1456 your right, but insurance will try to figure out anyway not to pay and somethings are sentimental and irreplaceable.
I used to commute by train in downtown Los Angeles for several years. These are some of the habits I developed and still do when on public transit:
I only carry bags that zipper closed. No open tote bags, preferably cross body bags worn close to the body.
I would turn my wedding ring to hide my diamonds.
When I board the train I look at everyone in the car and make note of every person who exits and enters the train. Never get distracted staring at your phone!
Make a mental note of where to call for help if there’s an emergency.
Always wear sensible shoes you can walk/run in.
Do not sit near a window with an empty seat near you where someone could box you in.
I really wish more luxury influencers would talk about this! Thank you for this video 👏🏻👏🏻
My parents house was burgled when I was younger, I didn’t own any luxury items back then but the burglars took all the few valuables I owned (I was gone for ONE hour so was clearly watched). The violation made me feel so sick! Fast forward a few years and I can now afford a few luxury items. I have been following luxury influencers for years to help me narrow down what I wanted to spend my money on but I’ve always wondered why no one ever mentions the risks of owning & wearing such items, especially the ones with big logos, out and about as it is something that has always worried me!! I think being very aware of the area you’re in, always holding your bag/have bag in front of you in public transports, possibly hiding the bag with a coat/scarf/tote bag and flip the bag so that the potential logo is hidden is the minimum we can do… It is so sad that we can’t just enjoy our beautiful items with peace of mind in public.
I lived in Barcelona for two years when I was in my early twenties - lived on the metro, trains and walking through really touristy areas - and I had to always super aware of my bag, always a cross-body, always with a zipper or a flap with a secure clasp and always right in front of me, never my side or behind me. Now I live in a much quieter city but those habits stuck with me always! Great topic, Sophie!
Sophie, thanks for the tips! One thing I've never thought about is not keeping my bag on the seat of my car. One tip to add: when I ride the Tube or Paris Metro late-ish, I always sit in the car closest to the operator and often I'll find other solo women there.
great tip
Same thing with sitting on a bus... sit as close to the driver as you can. Don't go to the back.
Sadly I way misled times by other women when deciding on which carriage to choose. They pretend they’re getting on same as u and last min they go to a different one and ure left alone.Sad we can’t help each other 😡
we need women only carriages like in japan
@@designorganize2608 I'll stand near the driver if all the front seats are occupied. I don't care how many seats up the back are available.
Years ago my now husband bought me this beautiful Dior tote for my 21st birthday. A couple of weeks later as I was walking home I rounded the corner and my home was a few metres away. This car drove down the road and this man jumped out and pinned me to the wall and said very calmly that I needed to give him my bag, it all felt really surreal I couldn’t understand what he was saying and the only thought I had was I’m not giving him MY bag. Another car drove down and it kind of brought me back to reality so I started screaming, this shocked him soo he let me go and I went screaming and running to my home. Everyone in my house came out, my brothers came out one came out with a wrench but they couldn’t see the guy on our road he’d disappeared. I was due to leave the country the next day so after speaking to the police they said they’d get back in touch. It turned out these men had assaulted a man on the road next to mine and then driven down my road and found me. It wasn’t me who shocked the mugger into letting me go, another man had rounded the corner. The mugger had them dragged him into the next road and stabbed him. After finding that out the muggers calm tone when talking to me made sense, he wasn’t aggressive as he had a knife. It took me months to be able to walk home alone, I had to be escorted to the station and from the station. Now I only buy bags I can wear as cross bodies and I hardly take anything nice out in London, I save my bags for holidays to the Middle East or Singapore. I genuinely can’t wait to move out of London and I was born and bred here.
Thank you for this safety reminder. I personally don't purchase anything flashy or with logos because I prefer a more understated look, but even then I sometimes get scared if I'm wearing an expensive piece (jewelry, bag, coat, etc.). As someone who commutes on public transportation, I know that feeling of being watched/followed and fearing that you're unintentionally drawing attention because of your appearance. As many of the commenters have recommended, carrying something that can be used as a weapon and running shoes are excellent ideas.
I once took my nicest bag at the time (under $1000USD) to a vacation with my best friend and she stole it from me! After parting ways, I had to track her down at an airport for it. I learned many things here, but one was how pervasive jealousy is and that it doesn't matter how much or little you have, no one is immune to it. I have friends with similar stories of having a coat or bag stolen during a night out with friends. :(
These days, I focus more on developing my confidence with non-material things and having fun, rather than worrying about what I look like. I still wear my nice things! But not all once, nothing with obvious logos, and I always remember to read the room. If I stick out like a sore thumb, chances are I'm overdressed and at this point, I'm not even enjoying my things because I'm just scared for my life. It isn't fair, of course, but that's been my experience.
You are correct about watching so called friends. I had two inexpensive Ace combs for years. They weren't made anymore. Two different friends sole my combs from me. If you lie you steal you cheat.
Poverty and jealousy are close cousins. I, too, have to read the room and if I don't feel too good about the company I am in, I will remove a piece or two of whatever the jealous person is casing on me and put it in my pocket. I am poor and most of my friends are poorer than I am. If they ask how much something cost me, I get a bit nervous. Who would have thought that a bit of self-expression can put you in danger?
I carry a small taser with a built in flashlight I got on Amazon. I always have it in my hand when I’m walking at night in the city . I also never talk on my phone or listen to music. I also always check surroundings. Sounds paranoid but you ever know.
Not paranoid at all. Better safe than sorry!!
Love the idea of the taser with a built in flashlight, could you please share link? Ty and stay safe!
those are illegal here - uk
@@seabreeze4559 make your own pepper spray buy a taser bring a small knife ,who care if illegal or not it self defense !A good lawyer will show how these laws are ridiculous !some laws are made to be break .
Carry a personal alarm... they're cheap and effective.
Also, when driving, I always lock my doors...reduce the chance of car-jacking.
Always look into the back seat of your car before you get into it, and as soon as you get in, LOCK your doors!
Yes, always lock the door. My car locks the doors by default when I get in.
The most important thing is to look alert. Don't walk with your phone out. I hold my purse close to me so it won't be easy to snatch off and run. I have also been carrying an alarm in my hand so it's easy to make a loud noise if someone is near.
I like the alarm idea. Thank you.
@@marina56 You can even attach it to your front door...if it is opened, it pulls the pin.
So true!! In Dublin, tourists are the biggest targets for theft because they look lost and unsure of themselves. Even if I don't know where I am going I pretend I know just to avoid having a target on my back. I carry an umbrella in hand at all times, handy for the Irish weather and its not technically a weapon if used in an altercation 😜
Yes walk with assertion like a New Yorker~ :)
I was walking behind this girl one day that had her phone sticking out of her back pocket. I stopped her and told her never to do that cuz a friend had hers stolen that way.
Please never be afraid to turn to someone else on the tube and ask them to walk with you. We will gladly do it, most people have experienced the same and are happy to help out.
Yes you should. Especially another lady because we are more likely to understand what's happening and thus help.
One time, I was in the train when a woman sat next to me. At first, I was confused why she was sitting so close, but then I noticed the look of fright on her face and her eyes kept darting towards this creepy man. I introduced myself and asked her to exchange numbers with me. The man ended up getting off a few stops before us.
Till this day, she is my friend. Her cousin and my brother are dating ☺️
Well, because of that I changed my style from wearing heels to trainers, or if I wear an expensive/designer bag I put it in a tote/shopping bag (those one you can fold) or a LongChamp bag so it hides the bag. Or put your wallet, money, ID in your bra when walking alone late at night to your car or home.
I do the same thing!
Good idea
😂 I just saw that I have 2 of the same comment 😅
I’m with you with the tote bag! Even if it’s a mid grade designer brand shopping bag, I like to store my shopping bags in a reusable bag to conceal designer logos when I’m by myself.
reusable plastic bag in a tacky design
Years ago, I was putting gas in my car and I had left the driver side window down. As I'm pumping gas into the car, I hear someone yelling and I look up to see my bag being lifted out from the back seat and a guy run and jump into a car and they drove off. I got in my car and tried to chase them down, which looking back was beyond stupid, and they got away. Now when I go to the gas station, my windows are rolled all the way up and my doors are locked. Lesson learned :)
When I took a cab from the airport CDG to Paris, the cab driver told me to hide my bag because he had 3 females passengers mugged by a moped gang, he now carries a big metal stick. The moped gangs target taxis from airports.. that is really scary specially when you are stuck in traffic. I too, will stop to put my purse in the trunk then then park my car a few blocks away. I always walk in a brisk pace in the middle of the sidewalk because you can either get pulled in if you close to the buildings or by the same token to a car if you too close to the road... I remember once I was walking and noticed a parked van which seemed out of place, it was a deserted street and turned around ... don’t know why.... always good to trust your instinct
they saw you spotted them, I got followed and narrowly dodged a black van. the man stopped following once he saw me on the phone talking about where I was (police need that info)
@@seabreeze4559 So glad each of you was safe.
If I plan on leaving my purse in the trunk for a quick stop after work, I usually put my purse in the trunk before I go to the destination. I just never know who is watching after I've parked at the destination. Also, don't leave anything that remotely looks like a bag. One of my friends left her lunchbox on the passenger seat. Someone broke in to basically steal her lunchbox. It was one of those lunchboxes that looks like a nylon puffy tote bag. The person probably didn't know it was lunchbox. Friend was peeved because of the cost to repair her window.
yea same thing happened to my sisters car. they broke her window. there wasnt even a bag in there just trash
I'm putting my purse in the trunk before the destination as well 😊 I thought I'm the only weirdo... nobody I know is doing this 😅
I hope they only stole it in the afternoon, so it'd be empty :D the look on their faces!
I also put my bag in the trunk before I go to my destination. But I also put my re usable grocery bags, a gym mat, my towel etc. on top and hide it.
I have an engagement and wedding ring set that I use while on vacation. It looks similar to my real set but made with sterling and CZs. If I am robbed or they fall off while in the ocean it is not a big deal.
That’s a great idea Jan Marie! 👍🏽👍🏽xxx
I do the same. Have for many years. My mother told this to my sister and I many years ago.
I wouldn’t bring even a ‘fake’ set. It’s not the worth of the item that’s important, it’s the safety of myself & family. The experience of being face to face with a mugger or being targeted at my family’s hotel room, is what I want to avoid.
I just dress down and like a typical tourist when I’m out now. Once in Honolulu i was being followed a couple of blocks by a group of local guys and i never felt so terrified in my life its just that constant are they going to jump me now feeling with every step. I had to go into a restaurant and order food just to hide out till i had a cab pick me up
Be aware o your surroundings at all times. Put the phone away, ear buds. Look under your car. When your driving if they hit your car don’t get out. They want to rob you. In the US we’re having a problem with this. When they hit you on purpose tell you you hit them and ask for money upfront. There’s a video on RUclips where the guy refuses to pay them because normally you have insurance that will pay. He breaks his windshield. Little kids in the back seat
house guests, maintenance workers and taxi drivers are used to 'spot' targets and usually get a cut like a preferred handbag
and if a scout asks you if your stuff is real, it never is
Whether it is luxury, ghost stories, or tips on life, Sophie is the best story teller.
I felt so violated when my car was broken into. They even saw the stickers on the car that I am looking for a kidney donor and a chemo patient. No empathy at all
All they found was an old coat I use to walk the dog, they took it! and it was middle of winter and I had no money to buy a new one ASAP. So for few long weeks I walked my dog without a warm winter coat.

I’m so sorry that happened to you 🥺
😢 omg, that's so horrible
I drove a classic antique sports car for years .. The RCMP told me to when in a parking lot always part right under a lamp post away from other cars as "thieves like privacy" ( their joke).
So glad you made this. I tell ppl all the time, what you wear can be an advertisement and that sharing on social media is no different. You have to know your audience. Enjoy your things, they are just things. Even if we love them. When I'm in certain parts of town I dress a certain way. As long as poverty and inequality exist people will steal.
I am glad you were not harmed in any of these stories. Thank you for sharing.
When on holiday I take a coach Cassie bag for when I’m exploring a new city. I only take a luxury clutch or mini purse for activities when I know we’re going straight from the car to the location and not walking around. Growing up in Chicago I know how easily it is to get robbed. If your new to a place and need directions always try asking an employee in a shop and not a local on a street. Also for transit always avoid empty train carts.
Yes, great tip! I do this too. No Chanel if I'm not driving door-to-door from home to restaurant/bar. Walking in any downtown with a designer bag at night for too long is just inviting trouble.
Sometimes close friends and family are usually the culprits of house bulgaries
🤷
It's so difficult to trust anyone, even close family and friends.
Not untrue...
So true!!! B**ch tried to steal my Fendi sunglasses. I can forgive but I won't forget.
On the rare occasions I go to a shopping mall (esp. these days), if I want to drop off packages in my car and continue shopping, I will always move the car to another area of the parking lot, usually on the opposite side of the mall. I figure if anyone was watching me, they probably stopped the moment I got in my car and drove off.

Well, my craving to buy a new designer bag has now been cured! Lol. Good points raised thanks. I’m thinking a card holder or cosmetic pouch could be a more discreet option for enjoying luxury items more on the down low, inside a basic bag.
I live in the bay area, and whenever I go to San Francisco, I use my worst handbag. I pack my car before I leave so I know I don’t have to go into the trunk and I wear Jeans and t shirt. I don’t carry any designer slgs. San Francisco is very dangerous and filled with homeless people. It’s pathetic and sad that you have to put on this costume when you go places like that. you can’t wear your nice clothes because something will happen to you.
I work in SF also and am thinking I’ll stop carrying a tote bag once remote work ends. Things were bad before the pandemic so not looking forward to having to be even more on guard.
San Francisco has always been one of my favorite cities but so much has changed over the past 10 years. Always stayed in the Union Square area but now even that is dodgy. I’m quite hesitant to visit now and that makes me sad.
Same but for Paris
I never upgrade my old bag to look stylish and the other parisian girls, although I would love to. I'm too scared of getting robbed. There are gangs in the parisian metro as well. I want to buy a nice second hand luxury bag but I will be very careful of where I'll wear it (won't use the metro for sure and probably wear it only on the weekend).
I'm from SF originally, the crime there is dreadful. A lot of muggings are violent, sadly happened to some of my family members there. Stay safe everyone.
The Lamborghini story always makes me cringe! I can't believe they waved at you as they left...joke's on them though! Unbelievable
I saw that with crossbody bags, a pocket knife will be used so the bag falls off of you. I always have my hand on my purse when it's crossbody & my bag in front of my body
I do the same with crossbody bags always in front or to the side if hubby is on that side:)
Can they break through chain crossbodies though? That's what I tend to wear.
@@kimtkb I don’t know but that’s a great idea. I have been thinking to chain link the bag around my waist attaching it to the Crossbody strap. The chain link could be easily hidden under blouse :).
My mums neverfull straps were nearly cut off on escalators on the tube
But wouldn’t that make it hard to sell then?? They lose the bag and only get the contents of it
As someone who works in the insurance industry, when a property is burgled, these days all they want is cash, jewellery and watches as anything else is much easier to trace.
Thieves will walk down a road and test every single property, if they get they search the master, the study (if you have one) and the kitchen.
The most heartbreaking thing I see is people not insuring their treasured possessions for enough or correctly.
computers? phones? are those enticing to thieves?
why the kitchen?
A neighbour had their bad taken from the passenger side of the car while they were sat at traffic lights. They smashed the window, took the bag before they knew what was happening, luckily they weren't hurt.
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of always keeping your wits about you when out and about--I think it's crazy people who constantly have their earbuds in while out on the street. Another thing I'm a huge believer in is paying attention to your gut instinct and as Sophie described, going out of her way with the Tube because something just doesn't feel right.
Unless you're the crazy person who has their earbuds in making everyone around you thinking you can't hear a thing, when you can hear everything going on around you!!!
I mean for me with ADD, going out without music on to drown out everything is exhausting. I can’t filter out all the stimuli I get so to help minimise that I keep my earbuds in whenever I can. Of course they’re not super loud and I can still hear what’s going on right around me but it helps keep out things from further away. I think just being aware of your surroundings visually is enough like that, and of course on a dark street at night the music is off.
If its during the day and im not in a low populated area music is on, once its night time, music is off but ear buds stay in and I routinely look behind me. I even do this when im walking my two german shepherds, because you never know.... But especially in winter, the ear buds help stop the wind which gives me ear aches.
@@roos-marijn I get the ADD thing, I have it too.
Yes that is why I have two gates to my farm,a Rottweiler and adt security. I also never drive home the same way twice and I vary my work hours. I carry an alarm in my hand and my alarm on my Apple Watch. However I do wear my nice things to work at my hospice office but I have adt there two with cameras. When I work at the hospital I do not carry a nice bag or jewelry. Wisdom is my best weapon.
My grandmother lived in boone, NC which is extremely rural but a tourist town for skiing and massive mountains. She lived in the litterly in between two massive mountains and had a steel front door. Even she got burglarized. Someone was able-- still don't know how-- to get in her front door when she wasn't home (she lived in a beautiful massive house but it was very dated) and she kept her jewlery dowbstairs in a bathroom. They took almost all of the real jewlery i believe. I remember thinking wow i cannot believe someone could do that considering she lived way up in the mountains on a hidden road.
I usually wear a cotton hair band over my watch

Almost never carry my expensive bags😿
I know it sounds boring and depressing…but I am paranoid
Wearing a band over your watch is a fantastic idea that I am going to implement! Thank you!
So terrifying! When I lived in NY, I found that even if I was wearing a mid-range designer item (like a Coach or Marc by Marc Jacobs bag) that people would often follow me around and try to catch me off guard. Thankfully, I was almost always with a guy friend or several. But by myself, I would always be panicking.
I was also robbed by two girls in the tram, I was leaving home from the city, the tram was not even crowded,i didn't have any money in my wallet but I had so many valuable books from uni.. I was terrified when i saw my backpack open when i sat down...a week later my wallet turned up at the tram company,my ID,tram card and everything else was in there but the old photos of my mom,dad and sister were gone. So weird. I feel you! Keep safe everyone! 💓
Sophie, I'm so glad you speak about the downfalls of owning expensive items my son was thrown off his mountain bike and the bike was stolen also my husband was followed by two men in a van whilst riding his bike luckily my husband was vigilant and got the men on his go-pro they stopped following him when he told them to smile 😆 my son hasn't ridden his bike since the incident you're correct we should be allowed to use the items that we have worked hard for but vigilance and awareness is paramount bless you Sophie 🙏
I hear horrific things happening in London and Paris now with theft. This reminds me that Tamara Kalinic in her video where her apartment was robbed, she said the thieves didn't touch her RTW or Shoes. Maybe thats where I will be spending my money more in the future
Most likely because these people want things that sell quick and with a profit. RTW and shoes hardly ever because of sizes and also because most people spend their money on handbags or accessories before RTW or shoes.
She was robbed in St.Tropez too years ago which leads me to believe that someone who knows her schedule most likely did this.
I have a feeling in her case is a close friend or family
What is RTW?

Hi Sophie ! I follow a luxury fashion influencer Tamara Kalinic who has been living in Paris for some time . One week ago she posted a vlog about being robbed of her whole collection ( luxury handbags, jewellery etc. ) . It was heartbreaking and infuriating .Like in your case , It's her work to buy , to unbox, to review ( most of the time) design items . I'm from Paris as well and the probelm you notice after living certain time in my city is the number of fake homeless people from Bulgaria , Romania ( gypsy people) who are sitting at the entry of your building ( especially posh districts ) and asking for money. In reality, they are there to discover, at same point, an entry code and to get to know daily habits of wealthy inhabitants so as to easily organize robberies . I believe that was in case of Tamara who buys lots of luxury , going back and forth with design logo purchases .
The rom are more a community actually they are not necessarily from Roumania. I’ve been between Belgium and France for many years and those deserve to be quick out of your country. About Tamara it was professional, criminal organization the kind of the peoples how robbed Kim Kardashian and Nabila the next days after Tamara.
It wasn’t a coincidence and you can easily find Tamara in Paris if you want, after waiting the good time..
@@aufe46357 Hi Alexandra . Maybe you are right about that . In the end ,is it worth buying design stuff ? I mean almost everyone is wearing a design handbag crossbody .
@@joannasliwa8147 I agree you point of view but in my opinion the big issue is the justice.. They know they will have anything ( the one in the street) so why should they stop? Sad to say but I wouldn’t wear a gold watch in many city’s of Europe at least when you are browsing. That make you a huge target.. Bags you just need to be careful and yes it’s « terrible » when you think about it.
If you have the chance to catch one of them don’t hesitate to break his hand and scream !

@@miriamhavard7621 the begging peoples that you will find in France for example are not gypsies. In French we call them les roms.

Thank you Sophie. I have a tip that when you enter your garage, keep your car in the reverse gear as it activates the camera and the warning buzzer, so that you can see anyone sneaking in. Once the garage door is down, then put your car in park. Also, always lock your car the moment you enter it and keep your handbag on the floor and not on the seat.
I agree - lock the car the moment you get in. Some cars lock automatically once you put it in drive. Do not wait for that. Also, some cars have automatic locks where every door opens once you open the driver's door - deactivate that.
If you are a photographer - I usually put my gear in a backpack that looks like a backpack, not a camera bag. Also, make sure to get a backpack where the gear comes out from the backside and not the front. Whenever I am out and about photographing I only wear simple clothing. I will often research what areas have the most photo potentials - so that way I am not having my camera out all the time. Which can be a target. :)
I live in the outskirts of a big city. And I always have to take a train to get into the city. It can get dangerous at night, so what I do is that I put my nice bah in a black tote bag so it is concealed when I take the train, and when I feel confortable I take it out. 😊 it’s sad to have to live in fear.
I keep a can of wasp spray in my car in the console between the front seats and one next to my bed. This is something the police (in the US) recommend because wasp spray shoots out as a stream, not a spray, which means they don't have to be that close to you for you to get them. You aim for their eyes and it will blind them so you can get away.
That is what I got my daughter to keep in her 1st car when she was in high school (USA here too). Even though she was a competitive shooter, she can't have that on school grounds so wasp spray it was. If anyone asked, she had to take care of a wasp nest under her car, lol.

The shoe thing isn't crazy at all... I feel and realise that I'm a much more appealing target if I'm wearing platform sandals, or even a block heel boot. These are the most "limiting" types of shoes that I wear and I realise I'll have difficulty running with, if I have the need, so I can't even imagine people who wear heals everyday... Not only women are easier targets cause they're tipically less resistant and easier to dominante, but the shoewear just makes it even worse!
It's sad that we have to consider think about these things, but it's true
Great video Sophie. It is uncomfortable to think about it but necessary. I will add that if you can’t run or ask for help do not struggle just pass your things. Your life is more important and you never know how far the thief is willing to go!

@@adamr-j232 omg I get second-hand anxiety every time I see people keeping their phones in their back pocket! 😅

Thankfully I’ve never been in any of these circumstances, but one other thing that should be mentioned is, workers that come into your house!
I’ve heard of people having say a plumber or electrician come in to your house and once they have spotted something of interest, they inform a “friend” of theirs and usually a week or so later, you get robbed.
I would suggest, if you don’t know the worker you are inviting into your house, make sure you keep an eye on them and put away any thing that is of value to either you or money wise.
Stay safe everyone
If you need work done to your home (plumbing, painting, etc) make sure to hire only licensed and bonded contractors. Don't hire small companies. And yep, watch them like a hawk. And don't have contractors at your home when you're not there. I had to have new steel screens put on my windows, and had to take a day off when they came out. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been home when they came. (Jan Griffiths).

Hey Sophie, I had one incident when I had just graduated high school and was in town for the day. I had gone to the library and there was this guy who was acting suspicious and I was always running into him whenever I would go around a corner or down one of the aisles. I left the library and was walking down the street looking through shop windows and notices him standing across the street in the reflection. I turned and started walking further down the street and noticed that he had crossed the street and was following behind me. I immediately crossed the street again and ran into a drug store and started walking towards the back of the store. All along the back of the store there were mirrors angled from the wall onto the ceiling so the store clerks always had a view down every aisle to watch for shoplifters. I looked up and there he was over in the next aisle. I left the drug store as fast as possible and ran across the street. He had followed me and caught up with me at the street corner. It was winter and he had one of those long mid length car coats men wear with suits on and he stopped me face to face and he mumbled something to me and opened his coat up. I just said no thanks and walked on by him. It turned out being kinda funny because it was like something out of a movie where some sleazy guy opens up his coat and there are watches and all kinds of things pinned to the inside that he was trying to sell. Probably stuff he had pick pocketed. It was really creepy. The other things that I’ve had happen is when I’ve been driving on the highway and someone comes up behind me, changes lanes to go around me but then get right beside me and just keep the same speed as me. If I speed up they will keep up the pace so I usually have to put on the brakes so that they end up getting far ahead of me. Sometimes I’ve had to take an exit at the last minute and go a different direction to where I was going. I assume they were checking out the car to see if it was worth stealing or carjacking. I always take good care of my cars and have sometimes put aftermarket wheels on them.
Similar happened to me, except the guy had nothing under the coat... 🤪
I was also stalked on the beach, whilst I had my toddler with me. As I ran up the beach, he undressed and started (you know what)! There are some sick puppies out there.
I would fit a dash-cam if I were you.
yea when people pull up next to your car and are obviously keeping the same pacce for no good reason i dont understand why people try to speed up. just hit your breaks lol. you were smart for doing that.
So sad for Tamara Kalinic too. I’m not sure if this video was made with that event in mind.

OMG Sophie, my heart was pounding when you were talking about the guy on the train sitting next to you and then following you! 😳
Appreciated the topic you selected for story time and loved even more your subscribers' stories. When I was a young girl, my siblings, mum, and granny went shopping together and purchased bedding and clothes for children. All the kids helped carry the purchases. As we walked up the path to our house, an unkempt young man with a cigarette in his mouth asked me a question I didnt understand. I asked my mom what he said. It appeared he asked for directions and as soon as she pointed out where the street is loacated with her right arm that held her purse, he snatched it off and mom fought him. I was scared he might have had a weapon and screamed for mom to let go. She did. Weeks later the empty purse showed up at our front door in a black garbage bag. We felt so violated.
Great video Sophie! Crime can happen anywhere and at any time so being aware and vigilance is the key. If you are carrying an expensive bag or wearing an expensive item and feel that you may be followed go to the nearest police station. DO NOT go home or somewhere where you will be alone and vulnerable. Stay safe everyone!
Thanks for Harding. You are so right. I was robbed several years ago in South Africa. I had just gotten into the country and arrived my hotel when these robbers armed with AK47 guns showed up out of nowhere. It turns out I had been followed from the airport. I lost my laptop and luggage but thankfully hid my purse. That experience taught me the need to be aware of one’s surroundings. Don’t get too drawn into phone or what you are doing. Folks are watching you all the time whether you are decked in luxury gear or not.... whether you are walking, driving or just sitting in a coffee shop doing your own thing. Your ability to read your environment, assess possible risks, chart possible exit plans and be proactive regarding your personal security might save your being a victim of crime. Stay safe y’all!
