Joe Abercrombie understands better than a lot of authors how to make miserable world without simply exploiting human misery ever chapter. Glokta’s chapters, for example, are filled with self-pity and self-contempt in equal measure, he despises being what he is but is too enduring a person to simply give up. Jezzal is pampered, spoiled but has a relatable sense of listlessness and boredom. Logen is a, on the outside, a good man who was very bad man in the past and hasn’t left that completely behind. Ferro is filled with justifiable rage and an emptiness brought about by once being property. The Bloody Nine is, I think, one of his best thematic tools for that. He’s the epitome of ‘badass’ but he’s also the reason Logen has almost no friends or relationships. What could easily be mistakenly praised or idealized in other works, Abercrombie presents only rarely and from a perspective of blood-crazed sociopathy. Logen Ninefingers, freed of the North and his own reputation, might become a good man. But every time violence threatens, the temptation of the Bloody Nine’s near-invulnerability and barbarism proves too strong. Rather than shocking displays of gore and brutality, The First Law works best when it makes each action a personal sacrifice on the part of the character. Generating, in me at least, a sense of disappointment and hopelessness rather than fear and revulsion. Amazing work.
I always liked how Logen’s alter-ego is framed as a separate character who is aware of Logen’s existence. That illusion of life makes the Bloody Nine so much more menacing.
I wish i could see that in real. The battle of the bastards would look like teletubbie baby tv against THAT! Raw brute violence - bloody nine unleashed! The bloody nine killed more men than the winter. Easier to stop the white flood than the bloody nine :-)
