The music directors were the employers of the singers. The singers got paid by the music directors, not the producers. The music directors like Anil Biswas, C. Ramachandra, and Salil Chaudhary used to think that they owned the singers. They were sometimes downright insulting to them. It has been reported by reliable sources that Anil Biswas once was so upset with Mukesh that he slapped him in the presence of others. I once saw Salil Chaudhary degrading the singers and musicians in 'Salil Chaudhary Night' in Bombay right at the stage in front of everyone. So, it is not surprising that C. Ramachandra would treat Rafi rudely.
