Impacts aren't the problem with knee injuries our sport, generally speaking, its ligiments tearing. A brace helps prevent this. A pad doesn't.

Honestly though, being very humble in my response because I don’t know. When is the point that you say to much working out hurts your knees, or wearing knee braces weakens them and not let them build to the full potential?
I know this is apples to oranges, but the analogy I have is line men on football teams. Big boys, hard on the knees. LSU used to require them to wear knee braces all the time on their lineman. I don’t know if they still do or not. But some teams do and others don’t. I think it’s to the point now where it’s up to player.
But, same thing, your working out trying to strengthen something so it won’t happen, then you create an issue by over training it… tear, blown out whatever…
But, if you wear knee braces the entire time, working out, playing, riding, are you helping it or using it as a crutch?
Not trying to be difficult, seriously asking. Should they be worn at all times during workout and riding? Or just when your riding? Or just when you workout?
Or, should you go easier or your workouts on those parts of your body? Swim for cardio rather run and cycle? Then wear a brace when you ride?
I know it seems that I’m over thinking it, but the way these guys train is insane with riding and working out. The impact and stress will always be there we know, but what is the better way to achieve better results and have your body perform at peak?

      @sthefanv7298 Год назад +2

Unless the brace is completely welded to leg, the chances of injury will always be there. The brace or pad are only sitting on the surface of your body, your joints are still moving, your can put whatever fancy material you want on your leg , the force generated by a motocross engine will tear it apart anyways. Injuries will always be apart of any sport.

Knee braces help prevent hyper extension of the knee and they don’t stop the knee from twisting which is what causes ligament tears most of the time. To help prevent this you have to train your knees according to protocols such as the kneesovertoes guy. However the forces of moto are so great that the knee is gonna blow out regardless if the mistake is severe enough. I don’t use knee braces because the cost/comfort.

I’ve used the EVS SX01 for 10+ years now. It’s a nice hybrid between both of these guys views. They’re a nice mixture of the tp199 knee sleeve with a thin support brace down the side woven in the soft padding material. My doctor actually told me not to get knee braces until I have knee problems. I feel like the extra thickness from the leg support actually gives me more control over the bike but how thin the material is all around gives me a more 1 to 1 contact feel with the bike.

Interesting subject! I was a motorcycle and car road racer. In the 70's and 80's, the bike sanctioning bodies rarely had neck injuries, but the athletes were (mostly) strengthening what ailed them. For me...even a sprint race hurt my long-ish neck, so I did many exercises. (Nearly never even hit my helmet on the ground) In my endurance racing days, I could outlast near anyone. The ACL dilemma, is a tough one. Bigger quads do not help. Better diet/supplements that assists ligament development/recovery is the best answer. The braces? Cannot see how that helps much.

I can only speak from my own personal experience. Ive only ever worn knee guards racing and recreational riding offoad. Iv'e had to experience the hard way how a Raptor peg feels buried in your shin and hitting trees with my knee cap. The brace can help with a prevoius knee injury keeping everything stay tight, but will limit movement and take the load off the the nearby muscle at ths point the focus becomes maintaing stability and strength the knee is forever compromised at this point. Now endurance training and strength training has helped me avoid many crashes from happening in the first place prevention is a great tool as well. NOW accidents DO happen and its a risk we all take riding how far one wants to take it is up to that individual to decide whats best for them.

I think like you guys said, it is very psychological. I wore knee braces and a neck brace, both because of the fact that everybody I know says it is the best thing to do to be safe. I rode then once without a neck brace and I never put it on again, and I also feel like when the bike kicks you, the neck brace pulls you kinda in the direction the bike kicked you, without one I kinda feel you can balance it out more. Same with knee braces, the only thing is that I haven´t ridden without them, but I think I´ll try.

I was 12 years old the first time I smashed my knee into a tree. That was in 1975-6. I wish I was wearing something. Knew braces didn’t exist back then neither did surgery to fix torn tendons and ligaments.
As a soccer player I used to run 20 miles during a game. As a cross country runner champion in high school my knees were amazing. I never had knee problems until I stopped running 3-10 miles a day.
Riding Moto and enduro now at 57 I won’t get on my bike without having some kind of knee protection. I rode mountain bikes and downhill like I did 20 years ago. Can’t wear knee braces riding a bicycle. The mountain bike has always been my canary in the coal mine. If I can’t ride my mountain bike I have no business being on my motorcycle.
The reality is this. If I get hurt riding in my back yard on the enduro track and can’t ride my bicycle I’m done. I use the two sports together. Without the mountain biking I could not ride motocross or enduro.
When I was a kid riding BMX all those years of playing soccer made me that rider I was.
I have knee braces but they are medical ones. They are used for recovery.
I wear knee guards these days for protection against trees, rocks and foot pegs. Knee injuries are the worst. If you can’t walk you can’t work. If you can’t work you can’t pay bills.

Very debatable, however there are facts you can use to conclude an opinion for yourself
    1. A brace limits mobility which can help not tear your ligaments
    2. Limited mobility can infact interfere with natural motion which can cause the fall in the first place, thats why some pros arent wearing them, which is a good point
    3. Stretching your knees daily helps prevent tears as you increase natural mobility
    4. Braces prevent impact injurys (bike falls on your knee" example
To me, doing enduro races i will always choose a knee brace
On motocross i still like my knee braces but i can see why some dont

If you stick your leg out, making contact with the ground, that’s going to PULL or TWIST your joints, tendons and ligaments. Add to that the pulling force of a 4 stroke race engine. With that in mind, if you think a pad or a brace are going to completely prevent the damage, then you are wrong. Our body is to soft to support the physics involved in hard crash.

I wonder what the stats are for knee braces in regard to knee injuries? If only 10% wear knee braces and they account for 30% of knee injuries then you would know to stay away from knee braces.

Knee brace is prevention. Been riding for 20 years before I did my knee and it was a freak accident not even an incident at the track. I could have hurt my knee the same way walking. No reason to wear a brace until you’ve done your acl. That’s when you go to a brace. Otherwise your giving away mobility and strength by relying on a brace to support your leg rather than training your knees to be strong. Definitely you lose grip on the bike with knee braces comparatively. There’s tons of cons to a brace and only a few pros. Wait til you need one. Wear good knee pads with an internal knee support system and get after it. Knee injuries happen in our sport. Regardless of a brace. It’s not the same as a helmet.

Sports research has shown knee braces DO NOT protect against ACL injuries, and only marginally protect against MCL injuries. Though the majority of this research was conducted in other fields, such as football, the mechanics of an ACL tear are the same. Additionally, from a biomechanics perspective, if you are not tall enough such that your knee braces rest ABOVE the seat, then your stance will be widened and you will absolutely be giving up leverage on the motorcycle.

''Back in the day'', people destroyed their knees, but slowly over a long time. Sure people injured them aswell, im not stupid. But not as much on PRO level as we see today.

I think it a leg mass and size thig then but more like a boddy builder doing moto but the knee brace definitely don't limit my movements due to it not on my bone but on flexible muscle boddy and i can get more leverage on the bike due to the knee brace being a large contact area so maby it more if you have a low amount of muscle mass they less protective but for me i still end up with bruise on the knee frome gripping and thats with a larger surface area to contact so there not much way this happening this knee pads but again just more muscle more room for bones to move in different ways to brace so now it more of a mechanical advantage should bring it up but the small size rider of the 2t days are out so may start being a better topic soon size not just product
    Like suspension setup

Braces or not, all that impact has to go somewhere, just like a neck brace!!

You are crazy if you believe knee pads are better than braces. Also for someone to say that it would have been better to tear my ACL is delusional

Knee pads in mountain biking are a big deal, yet NOBODY uses knee braces in mountain biking …..still see those stupid neck braces on occasion though

Great. Let's not wear a helmet next because someone else broke his collarbone. Besides, a helmet isn't a guarantee you will live....dude you have a large enough audience. Respect the gravity of your opinion please. Share your opinion, don't force it on others

Fantastic Conversion !!!!!!!!! But I do agree with Johnny, it's nice to have more to grip, but riders do piss and moan about bike widths. So Knee pads with extra padding on the inside of the Knee ??
