  • New challenges for local firefighters when it comes to electric vehicles. In December Pine Level, Alabama firefighters used 36,000 gallons of water to put out an EV fire on the interstate. But there is a much easier, more effective way to smother the flames. Fire blankets are seen as a good alternative by a number of fire departments.

So the roads blocked for 10 hours? This is going to work good

No, once the blanket is on it’ll take a matter of minutes for the battery to cool enough for transport of the vehicle. You’d keep the blanket on the vehicle and transport it to a holding area designated for EVs and that’s where it’d have to sit for a number of hours to prevent reignition.

Good idea. Curious about what is in the run off when using water.

Batteries contain toxic chemicals like lithium-ion, which can leach into the water supply and cause harm to aquatic life and ecosystems.

What about for EV busses, commercial trucks, semi trucks?

So fire and rescue personnel have to stay on the seen "all day long" ("when they could be needed elsewhere") when a regular car would have been towed away hours ago and the scene cleared ❗❓🧐🤔🤷‍♂️🙄🤦🏾🤦🏻‍♂️

No, the current guideline is 45 minutes

Whoever invents a fireproof EV battery is going to make a fortune.

The blanket is a good first step, but they need a secondary device to actually smother the flame. An foam that could be deployed before the blanket, or under it, to snuff out the active air supply - other than oxidizers in the batteries themselves - would help bring the fire down. At least until the vehicle is moved and air begins to reach the reactive chemicals again.
Or, perhaps, they could use far less volatile batteries with lower power-per-kilo drawbacks (LiFePo4, for example).

Foam is not recommended on EV fires. The blanket will smother the fire on its own. If you aren’t able to deploy the blanket, you’d just use water to cool the battery.

$1500 or 40L gallons of water + 7 or 8 firemen to put out one EV fire. Insane.

I team you may want to pass this along to that chief. Look in to energy security agency. They are doing up to date fire training for fire department and tow yards.

40,000 gallons sounds like a lot, but I have no idea how much water it takes to extinguish a regular car fire. Maybe it’s the same?

Some where between 1000 to 2000 gal of water worse case.

I haven't seen one advantage to using an electric car!!!! Everything about them is a nightmare! The cost of charging them. The amount of time it takes to charge them. The frequency they need to be charged. The cost of the vehicle itself. The danger to life and property they pose. The fact that it's "Fossil Fuels" that power the charging stations. I just don't see the up side!!!

I have an electric car and i charge it off my home solar. I use to pay $550 a month for fuel and now i drive for free, so when your saving $6600 in fuel it really makes more sense to own an EV over an ICE.

No, the car would be transported to safe storage area with the blanket left on for that amount of time.

I have 0 desire to ever have an electric car. They definitely have everyone fooled when it comes to these cars. Can’t even park them close to your house.

The oldest versions were built significantly different, and don't even have the features that make them good (250kw charging and AP2.0+ hardware). A 2018 Model 3 is going to need minimal repairs even 10 years from now
