- Here's the third in a series of videos profiling the sabre fencers I follow on the FIE circuit and what makes them awesome.
Starring Gu Bongil (Korea), world #1 at the end of the 2013-2014 season. An extraordinary athlete with an attack which leaves biomechanics experts speechless, and an incongruously clumsy and awkward game which leaves his opponents enraged.

Lol "That lunge..." I totally agree. Gu plays the most simple games among his other Korean teammates (Won, Kim and Oh esp). He's not so big on stop-cuts and parries as most other sabreurs. How he can lunge so far, fast, long and low AND recover from them is beyond me. Even the Korean WST have a different style that typically looks more like the Korean MST (esp Kim JY and Yoon JS). The Koreans are fast but Gu just fences weird from the other top male sabreurs in the world.
thirteenpizzas He's got one nice point counterattack, one nice parry and one utterly fantastic counterparry. But his repertoire overall is incredibly specialised. I think the lunge recover is aided by the fact he weighs nothing at all.
Congratulations to the editor - the tic tac sound synchronizes very well with the touchés and almost touchés. I keep having to rewind the video to understand what happened because whom I thought would score just didn't. It must be honourable, thrilling, and very annoying, for those who duel this guy.
