Hi Alan! Was just looking at your old DBX286s reviews. Trying to work out how much better my live podcast will be having one of those, versus just a straight mix pre 3? Also, I’m assuming the resolution in the strike is great news for you too?! If so…congrats from Andrew in Adelaide, Australia (formerly Sydney)
The WGA has a tentative agreement to be voted on tomorrow but SAG/AFTRA still has yet to make their deal. I use my DBX-286 every Livestream and my MixPre-6 every other time. It's a matter of choice.
Thanks Alan. Apologies for my ignorance on the strike details. I just know that your industry is fighting the good fight against corporate greed. I, and I hope many others around the world, appreciate what you’re calling out. Andrew
Im pleasantly surprised. Although for the first time you left me befuddled about how you determined line level pro vs consumer. -50db tone and adding 50db. Would it have clipped at a different point on the mixpre? Anyway, i see this as a more versatile alternative to the cloukidter and fethead type devices, excepr for the need for ac power, of course. So more versatile for non-mobile use. And a buttload more gain if I remember correctly. As always, great unbiased review, Allen!
RUclips didn't recommend video. I had to search for you. Bad RUclips, bad... This is Eric from Not Bios I changed my name... The methods you use for testing blows my mind and is on level I cannot fathom.
@@SoundSpeeds I will look for your review when I get home from work. I'll be reviewing my first boom pole in about 2 weeks. I got the Rode NTG 5 to use with it. I am not the skilled talent like yourself but I do know the NTG5 is more forgiving than say an NTG8 by far or a Deity s-mic 2. I now work with a content creator that does acting full time. I do the filming, editing and audio... He runs a completely different channel, making for some side income.
In some sense, this device, when connected to a cheap audio interface with higher noise floor, have similar functionality as an in-line preamp like cloudlifter or fethead. The most obvious difference is Rodyweil R003 does not require phantom power. Instead, it provides 48V phantom power itself.
@@SoundSpeeds I understand your point. R300 is not bus-powered like those audio interfaces. Yet my question is this: Suppose you connect the Rodyweil R300 to a cheap mixer or audio interface. Would you fine-tune the output volume by adjusting the gain knob on the R300 instead of the one on the audio interface or mixer? Given that the R300 has a lower noise floor and higher gain range, should I minimize the gain level of the connected device and let the R300 handle it? Does that sound right to you?
It's very simple. Mic level into the R300 and line level out to your interface. Since preamps don't have to amplify line level like they do mic level, you should have better noise performance.
Would love to see you do a video on best microphones for wildlife recording. I would be eager to see how the Rode NTG8 does, especially next to the MKH 8070 or even a smaller parabolic system.
If portability is not a concern, will this be a better gadget than inline preamps like FetHead and Cloudlifter? with higher and cleaner gain? - Looking for an option to bump up my mic interface + dynamic mic instead of upgrading the interface, which is an expensive affair.
I'm a bigger fan of devices such as this personally but then... I'm a much bigger fan to spend the money on a better interface with the amount of clean gain you want. I love the SSL 2+ personally.
Hello. I got KRK classic 5 speakers, and it has popping and crackling noise whenever i change volume to youtube, or fast forward the video. Also if i click to windows volume it crackles/pops. I have creative zxr sound card and this 2 speakers are connected with rca cables. Is there any chance that sound card is causing all this? should i test it on scarlet or amplifier to be sure that it is not speaker issue? I took it to shop where i bought them and it didnt have the problem. I watched your old video where you said you need to disable all devices you dont use. Unfortunately it didn't help.
@@SoundSpeedsI wish you wouldn't say stuff like that when I'm debating between an f8n Pro and a Mixpre-10 II. I hear the f8n Pro balanced outs are consumer level, which I haven't verified. That would be silly and an odd design choice.
I think that's right. We used an F8N on my Deity HD-TX video and I have a memory of being frustrated at that. Also... digital limiters on the Zoom but analog on the Sound Devices.
@@SoundSpeeds Ooo... That's right. That's also a big difference. SD makes things in true "I can't afford it" professional range, so I think they have a better grasp on what's needed. Of course, either would be way more than enough for me, but I could also probably also use sub-$1k microphones, but I'm just not good at doing that. There's always something you can get for a hundred bucks more, then a couple hundred more +++. I used to laugh at people with Neumann mics and $1000+ shotgun mics, now I not only have the Neumanns, but their ridiculous headphones to match. I have the MKH-416, but now I want the mkh-50, too. I even want a Neumann shotgun mic even though I've not once heard someone say they use it. I am a manufacturer's dream. Hey, thanks for what you do and thanks for always answering questions. We all appreciate you - a true professional doing this not because you want to sell a $5,000 boom op course but because you're a good man with a lot to share. We are very lucky.

Correct but it also requires you to plug it into a wall.

What's the spec on the PSU? 9VDC? Kind of a niche ask I know, looking for a mic pre to go on a pedalboard.
I'm not sure. In away from my studio right now but if you email me, I can tell you what it says when I return. Or... look up the manual
@@SoundSpeeds found one for 20 bucks on eBay so I'll be finding out myself soon enough! Thanks for offering though.
