    I've been running a RPi 4 HA setup for a while now and due to a failed router, i've been looking to start from scratch. Enter this video. I love it and immediately ordered a Zima board, received it, installed Home Assistant from the Applications folder. Super easy like you said! Now on to adding other apps like MQTT from within Home assistand (like one would do on the RPi...only to find out that thissss usesss....Dockers. To which I'm 100% unfamiliar with, including the the concept itself. I've done some research on it however there is very little documentation for the CasaOS custom install (unless you are a superuser and know coding inside and out already). Would you be able to either do a tutorial on the concept of custom docker installs or point us somewhere that explains the process? I'm eager to learn dockers as the principal seems rock solid...just need to start at ground zero lol. My previous Home Assistant setup used Tasmota, MQTT, Node Red, ESP Home, HACS apps, etc....

    attached. I'm really pleased that it met this specific need so perfectly. Not happy about the lack of sleep/hibernation though. The ZimaBoard concept is cool, and they have an almost-good idea. It needs a substantially better NIC chipset, more documentation, and needs to feel less like a Kickstarter project that died after they shipped the product. The bulk of tech support is through Discord only and it's very poor, plus no solutions are saved or browsable for future use given the fleeing nature of Discord. It took a lot of searching to find information that they should just be throwing on to a wiki somewhere. The NIC is fast enough to stream 1080p media to another device for decoding, but it can't keep up the video decoding itself (missing audio aside). Likewise it performs well when the desktop is in 1080p but lags considerably when in 4K. I can't really recommend the ZimaBoard unless your use case is very similar to mine and you don't mind the caveats I described. I do really like it for my application and it's much nicer construction quality than other cheap Mini PCs. It has a lot of potential as a NAS or other network device.

It's not the cheapest SBC, but compared to the price of a Raspberry Pi 4 even now, it is a good option. Really nice and easy to use. I quite like the board, though I think it is overkill just for Home Assistant, but if you run a few other things or even use small virtual machines, you can't go wrong with this board

    Bought one, tried HA with it and yep, nice quick installation. This is the first time I tried HA on anything and I thought I was going great guns... I followed guides for setting it up as I am rather the newbie in Linux and HA and then I became stuck. Find this in the add-ons menu of Home Assistant'... The what.? Where the hell is that? After a bit of research there are a number of different installs for HA and the one in CASAOS is not the supervisor installation. OK, how do I go about getting this fabled add-on installation then? To the Internet again.... Oh. Looks like a fair bit of learning is in my future for getting to grips with installing HA into docker containers etc. 😕
    This is rapidly becoming a paperweight for me now as I just can't be arsed to go out there after a days work. I just want something to work without it becoming a chore. I guess I might utilise it for something, one day I might just make a push and learn what I need to to get HA working with the supervisor install, until then though, it will remain lurking on the desk unless it gets sold on.

      I'm in the same boat. I didn't even know there were different versions of Home Assistant and this one is not the one we want. After researching we need Home Assistant OS. This version doesn't include add-ons where most "how to" videos with Home Assistant start. A learning lesson for sure and I'm pretty sure I got a pricey paperweight.
      I'm going to look into seeing if it is possible to install Home Assistant OS (the actual full program on this) and if not then toss it.
      I think the Home Assistant developers should rename the version that is on this to Home Assistant Lite and use a different icon.
      Google search shows many people asking "where is my add-on button??" and from the Zimaboard website there is no indication that this is a stripped down version.
      A great RUclips "how to" video would be how to get HACS working with this so it is usable.

    Not bad, but I'd rather spend a bit more and get an Odroid H3+ with much more power, since we go the x86 route anyhow.
    For around $220 ($20 more then the 8Gig zima) I get an N6005 CPU, more USB, 2x2.5Gig ethernet, 16G RAM, and a 250G SSD. Yes you have to buy the SSD and RAM separately, and you loose a PCI slot. But since this is not for the average user, I assume finding and putting in the RAM and storage is not a hard task to do.

    The Zima board has the same problem as the RPi - cables everywhere. Also, I am not convinced that the eMMC is sufficient if you want to run more that plain HA.
    A much simpler, cleaner and more economical solution would be to use a second hand Optiplex Micro which easily runs a few VMs on Proxmox.

    • @EverythingSmartHome
      @EverythingSmartHome  Год назад

      It has one network cable and one power cable, how would you get rid of those?
      More economical solution sure - simpler, I don't agree. I'm a big fan of the Optiplex solution though, made a video about it in the past

    • @ManfredBartz
      @ManfredBartz Год назад

      @@EverythingSmartHome The Zima board on its own is at best marginal for most home applications. Once you add essential peripherals including a PCIe card and an SSD, you really need to also add some enclosure for robustness and to contain the cable salad. Why bother with Zuma if you can buy a more elegant and economical solution such as an Optiplex?

    Hey, y'all. I'm back to this video because I am contemplating getting an Odroid M1 8G/32G and adding a cheap 250G NVMe. The price is about the same as the Zimaboard, but I love the preinstalled HA and onboard connector for the NVMe. Are there any big pros to getting the Zimaboard as the main HA controller compared to the Odroid M1?
    the Odroid M1 might be less powerful (I'm not sure tho, the 8GB M1 seems pretty powerful), but the power consumption is even lower on the M1
    I have been meaning to get back to HA for almost a year now, so I really need to get some hardware and reconnect my tiny amount of cameras and switches 😁

My question is if anybody knows if the ZimaBoard can handle these Services or not. I´m relative new to hosting and i cannot estimate if the ressorces of the ZimaBoard - CPU-power and RAM - are enough to provide a solid experience.

You can put hass on it or Linux and build your own containers.

    • @AndrewJonesMcGuire
      @AndrewJonesMcGuire Год назад +1

      Right, but part of the reason the Pi needs that support network, is because of its CPU architecture. This is an x86 CPU, so stuff not running because the architecture isn't supported won't happen, and any Linuxy issues that you need help with, can be found online - as if it was any other actual computer, whether that's a server or an Intel NUC - because it's a standard CPU.
