This was one of your best videos. Nobody does 2d tutorials 👏
I don’t even have 2D sonar. I’ve always used either a heavy Carolina rig or a 1 oz jig to figure out the depth changes and what’s on the bottom. Of course I’m a 73 year old rookie 😅
What a newbie, you're just getting started 😂.
How do you do this? I know it sounds like a obvious thing, but a little more detail would help me. Thanks!
Short and sweet and informative. Thanks Randy!
You should do more of this type video! Love it
Awesome video! Do more of this type...showing your 2d and talking about what you see and strategy.
Great video, Randy! I actually undid so high tech gear off my boat because I just felt like fishing instead of geeking around.
Randy thats why I tell other people about your youtube channel and why they should follow you. Great stuff thanks
Great info and you right on point about the new tech don't care for it. Use your instincts of how to find and enjoy the hunt old school. Thanks for all you do.
Good stuff Randy keeping it real and old school....
You need to get in contact with RetroBassin....awesome channel dedicated to old school lures, gear, and I'm sure his boat would take you back a few decades...could prolly even score some lures you haven't fished in 30 years
Retro bassin,, kickin' sum assin 🎵🎶
That song of his is very catchy lol
Thank you Randy, for making this video. I'm renting a boat, and now I know what to look for, and how to approach this.
As a bank angler that has a deeper pro plus 2 I appreciate these types of videos. It doesn't tell me everything, but seeing how the bottom comes up really helps me fish more efficiently and effectively. Can't wait to try it out for offshore fishing if I ever get another kayak.
Good stuff Randy. Really appreciate you!
Randy, this is a awesome video. Thanks for everything.
Good info. Keep these on the water demo videos coming.
I'd love to see more of these 2d videos Randy! Helps us poor boys out!
Killing it with the juice today! Much appreciated!
Really enjoy your vids. I agree with your concept of "catch fish minus tech". This vid didn't need the electronics, know the conditions. I was recently on Lake Wapapello and from your vids, I knew where to target, without sonar. Keep up the good work, as a suggestion maybe show more bank or river fishing, but I watch your channel every day . Cheers
Keep it simple - great, Randy! 😊👌👊
Great video. I hear everything you're saying about the Livescope. I rent a boat for a week every year in Camdenton, MO (big nianagua) and only have simple electronics on the boat. I'd love to see more of these 'dummies down' videos!!
Totally agree! Id rather be looking at nature and studying the lake instead of staring at a screen all day
Doin' it old school - keepin' it real!
Awesome video!!! Thanks for showing how to determine what's out there and how simple it is with 2D Sonar. I'm guessing you were using the transom transducer?? Stay Safe & God Bless!!
Yes, Randy flashers are still available from Vexilar and MarCum. I really like my Vexilar flashers and there is a transducer available that can shoot through an aluminum boat.
I do believe your Huminbird has a flasher feature in it too
I’m mainly a kayak fisher man I’ve had great success with the lowrance hook 5(it’s actually a 7). Had it for three years now and it has GPS, 2D sonar, downscan and sidecan. The maps definitely aren’t accurate but for the price it’s been a solid unit. Just wanted to throw it out there but Randy’s tips have put more fish in the boat than any electronics have
Would love to pick your brain on this as a fellow kayak fisherman.
That's it Randy's been slamming out videos so much lately I'm convinced he should run for president and save the fishing tournament industry 😂
I still have a flasher on my 20 year old bass boat. I still use it, and I find it useful for depth and thermocline.
I just fished a tournament with my kayak and don’t have any electronics and ended up winning against guys who did.
I would really love to fish with you sometime and learn more from each other. And the thing about taking in nature and everything you are right it totally clears and trains the mind, heart, spirit, soul and body. Thank you for the memory flash back of me and my grandfather bass fish together again. The best tournament bass fisherman I could probably of ever known the trophies I saw alone couldn't even match up to his success. I really wish you could of met him. I watched his last breath from old age he went peaceful in his sleep.
Sounds good in seminar form, Now wheel around there and stick one for us ! 😊
Great video Randy and your right! About the time I am able to afford what is the “big new deal “ they come up with something else that is a bigger deal!! I’m just gonna fish what I got and if i get out fished it will be their electronics not necessarily them doing it!! 😅
I have a 2014 Ranger Z521C with 2014 Lowrance electronics. My HDS 10 units have a flasher in the unit. I was surprised. One day, while graphing and switching screens, I found it. Just saying.
Awesome video great to see a pro who doesn’t rely on $20k in electronics to catch fish!!!!!!!
Great video.
Randy. Your Hummingbird HELIX may have flasher display. Would love to see you catch fish in the water with flasher or 2D sonar
Randy I finally got my grandfather used to do the samething with his 2D Sonar unit he had an old Eagle and taught me right of that. And you also gave the best advice you can give an angler period you all these guys fishing all theses high tech units they are only going to fizzle down from us 2D guys because of their ping's,bean's or lazers. Where we can vertical fish with a lot of and catch a lot of fish also. And I have been thinking and for all theses guy's with all this high tech unit's and everything. I can probably beat all theses by only seeing vertical fish and blind to all the rest of them actually I know I can. I think I finally got your point Randy.
Doesn't the humminbird have a flasher screen you can turn on in settings. Not sure about the newer units but my old 798 had that option.
You realize that 30 years ago, when 2D sonar started becoming affordable, "old-school" fishermen were going on and on about how that's cheating and how anyone could catch fish if they were using all that fancy technology. Kinda like the noise you make about forward-facing sonar, livescope, or any other new wrinkle in the game.
Thanks Randy but seeing fish and catching fish are two different things .Would have been nice to see you try and catch those fish.
When I see the schools of bait on your sonar I want to break out the sabiki rigs and see what kind of bait it is. That's a saltwater trick I haven't seen done in freshwater. A string of hooks with little feathers and a weight at the bottom is used to catch bait, or you can just find out exactly what bait there is so you can copy it with your lures. I don't know if shad or whatever will bite hooks but if so you could use that trick to ID whatever is down there. When I see that bottom finder I think it's time to catch that bait and get to trolling slow or bottom fishin'. That's why I watch, or ine reason, I have to unlearn stuff. Or maybe to modify my salty tricks.
One tip I'll give you, turn on your oscilloscope feature. That's instant feedback and tells you exactly where to drop your marker buoy.
How do you determine the chart speed per boat speed?
Some anglers match the boat speed and chart speed (2 mph = chart speed on 2, 3 mph = chart speed on 3, and so on). Other anglers will put the chart speed one above the boat speed. I’m not sure which is right, or if it’s just a matter of opinion.
@@fisherman9317 thank you for passing this info along. I had never thought of matching chart speed to boat speed. I will put this info to use. Thanks and tight lines.
So are you going over the point "parallel" with the bank or in and out fron the bank and back to deep water?
Thanks
My 40 year old flasher conked out last year and I scoured the earth for a new transducer but none were available. I was forced to modernize to 2D sonar. I miss my flasher.
Some new graphs have flashers on them
great video
Finding them with the ole Lowrance elite 4 hdi. My entire rig costs less than some of these guys electronics 🤷♂️
Big 👊on that ending right there🎣
Apparently you don't ice fish at all period they definitely make flashers n their high tech
Here the water is so shallow , idling around I don’t do much of it , I use my eyes and my rod to find fish , here if u know what to look for you don’t need no expensive fish finder
I'm still rockin a Lowrance HDS 5 on my rig. Can't say I see dudes on my lake with 100K boats doing much better. But I do see them looking down all the time and missing a lot of nature right in front of them.
Get you a dug out canoe, fashion together some line from a silk worm, whittle you a little wooden hook and dig up some worms. Who needs a 250 and 10’ poles. Lose the carbon rods too straight cane pole. Really take it back to basics 😅
Randy failed to mention why he has his unit zoomed out and failed to mention the double return for hard bottom most important thing.
Good point but I’ll trade you. I have a flasher still.
Why not just start casting lures out away from the bank and work your way closer in? 90% of the time that’s what I do. I use 2d to make sure I don’t get too shallow in stained water. As far as Johnny goes he spends hours using side imaging marking fish before he even casts a lure so maybe not a great example (just saying). I have no problem with anyone using any type of sonar. What I have a problem with is catching fish and leaving them in the livewell for hours. There was a study done of fish kill rate of professional anglers in tournaments and about 16% of the fish died after release. You can imagine what that rate is for anglers who don’t have very good systems. The kayak tournaments and MLF have the two best systems.
Lol shot at Johnny?
No. He’s the best offshore angler in the United States
Couldn't you just drive around with a flogger? Or use one of them underwater drones or maybe buy live scope?
Take em to the water, but you can’t make them drink ,if forward facing sonar is ok what of cameras . Don’t they fall into the same category, look but don’t touch ,only if we say it’s ok ,company’s that make underwater cameras should complain it’s unfair
So this is not cheating ?
What’s funny is watching these guys that have all the latest and greatest and they are fishing shallow don’t even know how to use it.
Didn't see any results
