Bates still needs to develop, gain weight and muscle, and learn how to play defense and pass the ball. A tall order, but he could really be something in a couple of years. Meanwhile, I one hundred percent concur about Wade. As long as he's healthy, he's like a Kurt Rambis who can shoot the three, and the piece who, I think, will put the Cavs all the way over the top this year.
The kid is 20 years old. He's just got to stay ready, strengthen his abilities, defend, get use to his new weight and keep balling. He will have his moment. If it's with the Cavs or another team.
Watched Emoni Bates play in the game where he scored 30 pts. Love him, but he's still rusty from his knee surgery. There will inevitably some injuries on the Cavs this season and he will get his chance to play then.
It sucks for him, but it seems that Emoni needs several Cavs players to get injured before he's going to see some playing time on his two-way deal. I agree that it would be nice to find a way to get Emoni some runtime because I am impressed with his ability to bulk up and he is already a legit NBA three-point shooter. The young man deserves a chance. There is no doubt that he can shoot the ball. We can't stash him in the G-League forever. A decision will have to be made on him sooner rather than later and it'll be hard to make the right decision if he never gets a chance this year with Cavs. Atkinson is supposed to be good at developing young guys. He may just have to find the right games to bite the bullet and dress Emoni. Maybe against Charlotte or Brooklyn or teams like that. Just dress him and put him out there for 15 minutes a game. It shouldn't hurt the Cavs ability to keep winning games when he plays. If he's not working, then just pull him out. I view Emoni as the eventual replacement for Levert. This is the last year on Levert's contract. Mitchell and Mobley's extensions kick in next season so resigning Levert will be tough unless he takes a significant pay cut to stay an extra year.
I like your take on Bates! Seriously, you’ve given good perspective and it’s an idea worth exploring to put him in some games against low probability (of beating the Cavs) teams.
The reason Emoni hasn’t played is because “26lbs of muscle” or not he’s STILL built like JJ from GOOD TIMES, he doesn’t pass the ball, and plays HERO BALL 99% of the time. This show is silly for entertaining that goofy caller 🙄
I love Emoni Bates but just got back from injury, needs more work, especially on defense, can even get more better at offense, but I can see He doing something in near future, also think Jaylon Tyson can get better, probably more on offense, and let not forget our Aussie Luke Travers, they can be major future Weapons for the Cavaliers, but I agree Dean Wade should probably stay in the starting line up, but my Isaac Okoro 💪😤 been showing out, We need a back up center and a consistent 3&D maybe but for a Center!! ⚔️🛡️⚔️🛡️
Emoni Bates need to go to another team...a team that is struggling. He is a good shooter, he can defend, he can bring the ball up the floor and pass it. How many players play lockdown defense anyways. Not many. And, they are still in the league doing nothing. Bates is NBA material. Talk about a bucket getter. Should not be in the G League stashed.
Bates has never been a consistently efficient scorer and he needs to get that sorted before he can be a NBA rotation player. He was awful last year in his limited NBA minutes, totally unable to guard his position and looked totally lost when he didn't have the ball in his hands (not surprising)and hasn't had a shot yet this year because of the injury. He's a young second round pick, so making a NBA roster will be an accomplishment in itself, if it ever happens.
@@DwayneJones-r5r First of all, NBA players do play defense, and some are better than others, but for winning teams being a competent-to-excellent defensive player is sort of a non-negotiable (with a couple notable exceptions). What you cannot be (and what I've seen that Bates is) is totally unaware that a) defense matters and b) the basic concepts of team defense. Physical development is needed, but so is awareness of what defense means and how to do it. Can he get there? Sure, maybe. But he has a really long way to go to make up for the development mistakes when he was younger.
From what I saw, his defense was basic. He can learn to be better. A lot of teams play basic defense anyways. Only the winning teams play better defense...effective defense. Needs more playing time. Can be used as a shooter only, like Ray Allen. Some teams have good shooters and rebounders. Can be a problem to defend against that. But, lockdown defense? What else is required of him? If you don't like him, just say so. I can name players that can't stay with their man, or play helpside defense. Yet, they play all the time.
Teams literally never leave him open on 3. And he shoots 35% this season on decent volume. That's pretty good for a guy that barely shoots uncontested 3s
Overrated. Will never be what people thought he would be. Not even close. A late second round bust. Great HS player. Bad college player. Awful pro. Next subject. I can just hear the responses "you never made it to the pros!" "He's better than you'll ever be" "hater."
@JohnMuscarella-b7p I'll admit, I was a bit harsh, but he had just declined so much since he was the National Gatorade player of the year. I think his game peaked in high school. Going to Ypsi Prep from Ypsi Lincoln hurt him. His dad did that. He should have went to an IMG, Mountverde, Oakhill type school instead of his dad creating a Prep school like Ypsi Prep specifically for him.
@@gottooooo The issue is he never learned how to play actual basketball, like, the game itself. He was so talented at a young age that he could just go iso and score a gazillion points and he dominated because it was always about him and he always had the ball. But that only works so far and it stopped working once he got out of high school. But in the meantime that's still how he thought the game was played. So on top of getting him physically ready to be a NBA player the Cavs development people how to teach him how competitive basketball actually works. Can he learn what he needs to? It remains to be seen, he probably has two more years to show something.
@CM-ft9ep That's well said. I would agree. His dad created a prep school in Ypsilanti Michigan. And yes, it was all about him. It was a complete failure. He should have gone to a Mountverde, IMG, or Oakhill type school.
Terrific guest, Dave! That was the most truthful breakdown about our SF position. I love hearing the howl, and I couldn't be happier with the Dean!

a 220lb Emoni Bates would make us a dynasty.....but he lacks discipline on defense and offensive versatility. HE NEEDS MORE TIME
You havent been watching him at all. Hes the most versatile scoring wise

he was injured most of the season. he just got back a few weeks ago.
Hopefully we keep him long term he goood I keep sayin it
Bates ain’t ready yet and Dean Wade just has to stay healthy that’s his biggest issue he’s been healthy this season and it’s showing in his play
Dude this is the LeBron NBA not the Allen Iverson NBA. Bronny James got a chance.
Ty Jerome isn’t getting playing time. How are we going to find time for Emoni?
The Cavs are on pace to win 70+ games. They don't NEEED much😂

Dean Wade how come you didn’t bring up his injury issue, which is really often which affects his availability
Because we're 29-4 and 14 deep. Who is he better than other than TT?
Because he ain’t shown he is good enough
Did bro ever open his eyes
This is a great system for hm to learn the year after next a few charge players will be rotation pieces thor ,Bates , Travers
