  • Fuel odor in the cabin 2015 - 2016 CRV leaking valve cover gasket may be the problem. Fuel does end up in the oil on these engines do to direct fuel injection on cold starts, fuel makes ir past the piston rings and ends up diluting the oil with fuel. Make sure to change the oil every 5K miles or less. Honda gets a big F on this engine design. If you found this video helpful, please give a like, share to anyone that may be experiencing fuel odor in the cabin, a leaking valve cover gasket may be the culprit.

Replace the PCV hose from the valve cover to the back of the Intake, the fuel vapors permeate the hose also causing Fuel smell at idle and Driving... Know issue, don't have the bulletin handy and they updated the Part number with a countermeasure hose. Siliconeing the entire valve gasket down may have been the original source of your leak in your before removal shots, in that area as well, no need to as that's why it rubber( Not saying you did that btw) New P/N is 17131-5A2-305. Good catch

Thanks for that info, I’ll jot that part number down for future reference.

Thank you. Have 103k miles. No odor yet. But it does consume oil. Will keep alert. Saved the video if needed.

Hopefully this video helps you, the valve cover gasket failed on ours, I spent hours trying to find any information to what could case this to no avail then hours and hours looking around in the engine compartment, finally found the culprit. The oil in these engines gets contaminated with fuel because of the direct fuel injection. Good luck, hopefully it cures yours.

Thanks for running the engine at the end. I forgot to check how the engine is supposed to sound beforehand; I turned it on after and was startled by the loud clicking, which I now see is normal.

Yeah they have a little clicking sound, the camera mic seemed to amplify the sound. But yeah it’s normal.

The white stuff on the valve cover is from using oil that has Parifin wax in it like Quaker State and most of the petroleum that comes from up north. Oil like Mobile and Chevron oil comes from southern crude that’s less likely to give you trouble.

Ok thanks. Others have said it is from condensation during the warmup and the plastic valve cover.

No problem 😉 From what I gather, these vehicles are notorious for developing leaking valve cover gaskets. Being made of plastic, I see why….

That is DEFINITELY WATER in that valve cover. Could be condensation from those short trips or a leaking head gasket, but DEFINITELY it's water. Good luck, friend.

Is it possible to disconnect the battery instead of putting a bag over the alternator cable?

What's the torque spec supposed to be for the valve cover bolts?

Not even sure, I just tightened them semi-snug. The special bolts bottom out.
