    Wouldn't it be wise to set the neck relief BEFORE the action height? because wouldn't changing the neck relief change the action that you just set first?

    • @DaveTaste
      @DaveTaste Год назад +4

      Exactly that.
      Relief.
      Action.
      Nut depth.
      Intonation.
      That's the way I was taught by a Luthier in the UK. I use a Stewmac nut depth guage for all the measurements. Perfect every time.

    • @paco.taco.flaco28

      I agree. Neck relief first then action

    • @dwillc6621

      @@alamogiftshop You're correct in what you're saying... and that's the reason why you should set neck relief before the action. The action does not affect the measuring or setting of the neck relief, but the neck relief does affect the overall action. Why you should set the relief first and then the action.

    Marty, thanks so much for your instruction. I'm 57 years old and just starting with the guitar. I had a near death fall, two years ago come January. I've lost some cognitive abilities and most of the use of my left hand. I bought an Epiphone Les Paul Special to learn on.
    Your instruction is plain, simple and clear. Thank you so very much. You're a Champion.

    Just wanted to stop by to say a massive thanks for being a magical human. I went and bought a Boss Katana 100 MKII and an Epiphone Les Paul Studio in Cherry this morning. I’m going to play wrong notes and make awful noises until it starts sounding like music. All with my own personal Marty guiding the way. Thanks for the gift you give everyone Marty. Love you man.

    Thanks so much for this. I’m a beginner guitarist (less than 12 months). I bought a brand new Epiphone Dot to start with and eventually took it into my local guitar shop for news strings and a ‘setup’ as I didn’t trust myself not to break the guitar. I paid out £30 and I received the guitar back with new strings but continuous buzzing on E, A & D. Fixed the problem myself with your advice 👍

    I recently bought a Blueberry Burst Epiphone Es-335 as my first personal guitar, after 5 years of saving up my money with no real purpose. It looks absolutely gorgeous and sounds amazing too, but as I am still fairly new to the world of guitar, I was unsure on how to properly care for it, so this video has been very helpful. Thanks so much!

    Umm... The neck tilt isn’t because of the tunomatic bridge; it’s because of the arched top, which places the bridge higher than the neck joint. Same on a Les Paul. Note that there’s no neck tilt on an SG, but it also uses the tunomatic bridge.

    • @kenoakee
      @kenoakee 2 года назад

      yeah. He means well but has some things to work on. Nut slot height should be checked first. Then neck relief set. Set bridge height. Lastly pickup height. Or at least that's my usual basic order.

    I’m so confused. Is every website wrong on how to set up a guitar.
    Step one. Put new strings. Step two check neck relief and adjust truss rod if necessary. Step three three check string height. Check at first fret to see if the nut slots are correct then at 12th fret to see if bridge needs to be adjusted. Then last would be intonation. You would not adjust your bridge before adjusting the neck because once you adjust your neck it will change the string height. You also want to start with new strings because depending on how old your strings are the measurements will change slightly when you put in new strings. Yes that is a beautiful guitar. I figured I should end on a positive note

    I’m no luthier but you definitely set the neck relief before the action. Then pickup height and intonation. I also think what he said about not needing a feeler gauge is really bad. I mean a $5 tool that gives you an actual measurement. After you get the measurements you like you can duplicate it over and over. Especially if someone is doing this for the first time measurements let you know where your at.

The winner? A black Epiphone ES-335 Pro. Sounded best, played best, felt best. When we take away all the logos and marketing, it’s all about the right guitar. Didn’t mind saving $3000 either.
