This is an anti-dote to GAS sufferers who drown in gear, but can't squeeze a half-decent musical track out of all their stuff. Restrictions.. simplicity, definitely helps to produce better music.
Laurence Vanhelsuwe exactly I don't make music but in any field o work, the gear you own is to grow along with you and your skills, as your skills and abilities demand.
Eh who cares. Those people collecting gears do it simply because they like playing with the gears, not making music. It's probably sounds like a stupid hobby. At least they support the gear companies tho.
The microbrute is such a sick instrument. People who shrug it off as a toy are honestly just lazy and don't care to put in the work to get the sound inside of the thing OUT. absolutely loving these sounds man. Obviously limited in comparison to more expensive synths but this video just shows what an amazing studio tool this synth can be.
Ho scoperto i tuoi video, me li stò vedendo tutti uno dopo l'altro. Anche io sono vecchiotto ('77), e trovo certi strumenti "vintage" estremamenti affascinanti - e i tuoi video sono strepitosi
you are providing some very useful and insightful information for composers, sound designers and engineers. Thank you for sharing the knowledge you have acquired over the years. you are very generous...i imagine a book...takes all these styles you are so familiar with.....you see all the settings and patches for every sounds....it also explains the fundamental of a style etc...and it comes with a vinyl of all compositions..i would certainly buy that! anyway...thank you!
sunil solanki its kinda both. you don't want to hear Justin Bieber fool around with a Jupiter 8. it's difficult to explain, even the best can sound terrible and the terrible can sound great but the great if composed on the worst can sound.. not so great.... an example would be tangerine dreams rubycon created on vsts
Always love and appreciate your desire to share all of your knowledge of these old and new instruments amazing thank you so much I am actually in Berlin ;))
I've been watching your videos since you started years ago and I'd say you are one of the absolute top synth reviewers on youtube at this moment in time. This video is no exception, makes me wish i had more time for my analogue gear!
To me, it really doesn't matter if you're using small, inexpensive gear or a big pricey modular Moog or similar equipment to recreate that Berlin School style. It's how you do it and how effective the results are. Not everyone has the dough to afford a modular Moog but many more can afford a MicroBrute, Monotribe, and Monotron Delay. Norwegian electronic act Breidablik (Morten Birkeland Nielsen is the man behind this act) manage to create Berlin School style music on small, inexpensive portable gear. You can find out about Breidablik on Bandcamp. The music blew me away and the guy knows his stuff.
“And now let’s put it all together” could you do a video on that part? I am curious what this looks like in your multitrack setup...is it four (or so?) continuous audio tracks? Or do you record say 1 measure of the bass then copy paste a hundred times through the song? And the buzzy / noises sounds...same question, juts an 8 bar buzzy sweep dropped in or is that its own continuous track?
I've been using the MicroBrute in some of my incursions into Berlin School, but never tried to do one relying only (or mostly) on this little beast. This video opened new perspectives for me. Thank you! :)
That flute tone really came through nicely, I e been struggling to get what I want out of my microbrute for years (mainly going for bass sounds) but This made me think about the lead frequencies. thanks
agreed, I have the microbrute, I kinda wanted the mini but I went with the micro because its more portable, I'm on the road a lot and its prefect, I dont gig with it but I have a mobile studio setup for when Im in my hotel laying down tracks.
Hi, SynthMania, first of all, thank for your your so explainatory and creative videos, those are being jewels to me. After DJing, I'm beginning into the producing world, and I have a question... Do you think the Monotron will do good for Dub? (Not Dub techno, but Dub) Thank you!
Really nice! Its amazing what can be done, or what you can do, for under $400. I have a feeling my attempt would not sound so good. I would love to hear you step up with an eventide space or big sky.🖖🏻
awesome! I got a microbrute myself not long ago, as a funk guy I wasn't sure whether I'd like it but I think it's brilliant. nice to see a musical demo going beyond someone turning the brute factor all the way up...
Hay, thanks. Been trying to get someone to lay out instrument parts. The strength of the synth is how well it can do a flute, right ! Sub for this vid alone
Restrictions are good for creativity! Love the monotrons! Really understated super small instruments! I recently used them with the Korg Gadget app on iPhone for weird effects, gorgeous filter sweeps etc. Check out JUPITERBARNEN - SPELA FORTNITE HELA DAN on Apple Music & Spotify to hear the monotrons in an old school synth pop mix (with my kids screaming/singing on top of it)
I'm a little late to this party Paulo but I just loved the 'Berlin School' session. I'm curious though, how did you hook up the Monotron Delay with the 'Brute? I really want an affordable delay but I don't see an easy way to hook this up with my hardware synth (MicroKorg XL). Thanks..
HI synthmania, thnks for your videos...please could do explain about connection that your was used, line out to aux? or cv to...form monotron to microbrite?..I have try lineout microbrute to aux monotron and only sound a load and fixed tone...like electricity high tension!! please help me...I buy a monotron delay only to play berlin old school...I love berlin old school...thanx for your time .regardsfrom 32° lat south, Valparaíso, Chile
So having the MicroBrute and the Monotron, is that all you need for this set-up? There's no hidden Midi machine you have to plug everything into or an Audio Interface, I'm just learning about how these machines work. I'm from London and went to all the free Rave parties and festivals in late 80's early 90's, last festival there was Castlemorton. It's just amazing to see how the music back then was made. IMO nothing now compares to the music that was made back then.
This is all you need to play it. If you want to record it to the computer, you can use the computer's built-in audio card, but yes, you might want to consider buying an audio interface for added functionalities.

Nice man I love your videos I want to ad the 70s and 80s electronic sounds to my modern tracks I have a Roland Jupiter 6 and a jp8000 I also get great sounds from my electribe
Please, can you tell me how connect both brute and monotron? What I/O and cables needs to your setting? I have a small external audiocard too. I bought both the brute and monotron but i'm a newbie and i'm not able to use monotron as delay-fx for brute (like you)... Thanks in advance.
Ross, all you need is a couple of simple 1/4" to 1/8" mono audio cables (or a small adapter with 1/4" female and 1/8" male if you alread have a standard 1/4" to 1/4" instrument cable), for example, like this: media.sweetwater.com/api/i/q-82__ha-3d7f7949e01e16bd__hmac-45def56e909b4660984df87fb832785623c7bb4a/images/items/750/CMP305-large.jpg
Solved. Connect the brute master-out to monotron aux-in (with jack to mini-jack adapter) and monotron phone-out to audiocard input (with mini-jack to jack adapter). I don't know if the best solution but it seems to works.... Hope is the same solution you wrote me. Thank you very much (Sorry for my english.).
Great demo!!! Can I ask how the recording process was? Track by track into a DAW? I guess the Microbrute can only play one 'instrument' at the time? Or am I missing something?
I have one of these & it always amazes me how these guys can make bloody amaze ballz patches on the thing!! I just twist the knobs & hope something cool happens! What am I missing! I have the patch cables. By the way, does anyone know what channel I set for Midi for this synth? o.O
KINDLE Marco Ossidiana may I make a suggestion? Search for the videos, "intro to synthesis" by NY School of Synthesis, and take the time to watch all 3 parts. I love it!!! Dark, atmospheric, evocative! Superb track!!! Is the Minibrute able to save patches, or did you have to manually create all the sounds (filter adjusting, patching, parameter tweaking, etc.) while tracking? I hear there are "templates" you can use to note down all the parameters and switch positions to recall patches?...it sounds great!!!
I just bought a micro brute a few weeks ago its my 4th analog synth I love its simplicity and many times 1 LFO beats 2 tbh my Bass Station 2 LFO 1 I absolutely can't stand... the micro brute is a beast nice work!

plus the microbrute is an absolute sound beast.
I have too little experience to produce something worth listening to, but its so damn much fun
Rocknoob49 don't defeat yerself, you may make music that sounds good. 😎
Laurence Vanhelsuwe exactly I don't make music but in any field o work, the gear you own is to grow along with you and your skills, as your skills and abilities demand.
Laurence Vanhelsuwe true

Dude, the synth flute at 1:40 is magical
reminds me of zelda 64 orcharina of time!
Yeah that is impressive / surprising!
i spent last 4 evenings just looking and listening... amazing guy you are
I did the same, really ...
Ho scoperto i tuoi video, me li stò vedendo tutti uno dopo l'altro.
Anche io sono vecchiotto ('77), e trovo certi strumenti "vintage" estremamenti affascinanti - e i tuoi video sono strepitosi
Haha, :-) grazie, Giovanni
Videos like this are a wonderful source of inspiration and a proof that you can do a lot with little.
Absolutely outstanding!!! You are truly old school. Keep making beautiful music.
you are providing some very useful and insightful information for composers, sound designers and engineers. This gives me hope that I have a chance to make something musically with only a MicroBrute.
That flute sounds amazing! You should really do more Berlin School, especially with this sound.
Really awesome work! I love videos like this where people take a few common cheap things and try to make something great.
It's not the tools but the artist...
sunil solanki its kinda both. you don't want to hear Justin Bieber fool around with a Jupiter 8. it's difficult to explain, even the best can sound terrible and the terrible can sound great
but the great if composed on the worst can sound.. not so great.... an example would be tangerine dreams rubycon created on vsts
+Device Factor
That's right! It's both because, even sound alone can affect your feelings as well!
Device Factor 'you don't want to hear Justin Bieber'. Period. ;)
Stefano Papaleo Good point.
Stefano Papaleo that's understating it lol... whenever I hear modern radio music I want to run far far away
Oh I really liked the flute melody!
Brilliant!
Really cool what you get out of these two! Bravo!
Always love and appreciate your desire to share all of your knowledge of these old and new instruments amazing thank you so much I am actually in Berlin ;))
I love Berlin School. It's perfect for chilling and is the forerunner of many genres I like as well.
Hi Paolo, great video - You and Phat Flavour Crew are my favourite artists at demonstrating and producing Oldskool styles.
Really deserved to be released as actual track...
Well done Paolo. This proves that when you've got much talent, you don't need much gear.
I've been watching your videos since you started years ago and I'd say you are one of the absolute top synth reviewers on youtube at this moment in time. This video is no exception, makes me wish i had more time for my analogue gear!
Nice Sound buddy! Beast of a Synth I have the Minibrute and i am only just scratching the surface with it's sound

Great Demo of this two little guys in a very musical context!
sounds beautiful and authentic like early 70s !!!!
GREAT!!!
It sounds awesome!
Awesome composition! Love the sound also, has that real vintage thing going!
Bravo 👏 Edgar Froese would be impressed!!!
nice work. the sounds take u on a journey
That flute is making me so happy.
Great video! really nice patches
Thanks a lot!
Great vid! That flute sound makes me think about one of Vangelis' Antarctica songs!
That flute tone really came through nicely, I e been struggling to get what I want out of my microbrute for years (mainly going for bass sounds) but This made me think about the lead frequencies. thanks
Excellent work. Added to my growing hardware synth demo playlist. :) Greetings!
damn the flute is so awesome. you got some damn feeling
This is awesome !! I'm a huge TD fan since the early 70's and you make me wanna play Phaedra by myself :-)
Fantastic piece of music.
Thank you
Excellent job. Those Arturia synths are great. I have the MiniBrute and love it.
Wonderful machine, indeed. I have the MiniBrute SE. Beautiful and affordable.
agreed, I have the microbrute, I kinda wanted the mini but I went with the micro because its more portable, I'm on the road a lot and its prefect, I dont gig with it but I have a mobile studio setup for when Im in my hotel laying down tracks.
Now Tangerine Dream style, very impressive!
I love Tangerine Dream! The first electronic band I really got into
WOW! You have inspired me... simply AWEsome! Excellent!
Oh man I've never seen your face before and I just realised that the whole time i've been imagining you as the keyboardist from Spinal Tap
Claire A thats a compliment
At least he's not the drummer
Fun track, bro! My Monotron loves you. It was looking for that flute patch for days. Wicked feedback in that Monotron Delay!
Hi, SynthMania, first of all, thank for your your so explainatory and creative videos, those are being jewels to me.
After DJing, I'm beginning into the producing world, and I have a question...
Do you think the Monotron will do good for Dub?
(Not Dub techno, but Dub)
Thank you!
Great video and tutorial, did you use any DAW for recording it or its the Microbrute and monotron alone? Thanx
It is layered
Respect
Beautiful sounds
Skills- that tiny Monotron can cause big problems in the wrong hands
Great music
It is amazing to hear what one can do with cheap but powerful technology.
Oh wow I have those and never thought of connecting them like that!Actually using the Monotron through a phone mic and it actually works...good tips!☺
I think he just connects the headphone out of the Monotron Delay to an Audio Interface or recorder.
Wow, very impressive, I love that flute sound :)
Keep up the good work !
Très grande maîtrise des générateurs...
Programmation impeccable...
Your patches are excellent!
Thanks!
Tops. Lots of great uploads lately. Subbed.
Really nice! Its amazing what can be done, or what you can do, for under $400. I have a feeling my attempt would not sound so good. I would love to hear you step up with an eventide space or big sky.🖖🏻
Vladimir Ussachevsky Yassss!
Wow, awesome!! Somehow reminds me a lot to the "airwolf" soundtrack and background music.... :)
Sub for this vid alone
does CV out send pitch without the need of pushing keys? like if I wanted to change it with a potentiometer and then get back in CV in

So wait, is what I'm hearing 100% the microbrute? All the sequences stacked and playing at the same time?
yes, with multitracking
Really great. But i can't understand how you managed to get differents sound/patches as the same time. Or didn't you ?
This was multi-tracked in a DAW
Yes, sounds like tangerine dream!
Amazing done 👍
I feel like I'm on a mission in Mass Effect
yeah it does sound like the first game
Ohhhhh totally like that
Man! That was just beautiful and inspiring!
I'm a little late to this party Paulo but I just loved the 'Berlin School' session. I'm curious though, how did you hook up the Monotron Delay with the 'Brute? I really want an affordable delay but I don't see an easy way to hook this up with my hardware synth (MicroKorg XL). Thanks..
Is it my imagination or did Arturia stop making the Microbrute although they say no?
HI synthmania, thnks for your videos...please could do explain about connection that your was used, line out to aux?
or cv to...form monotron to microbrite?..I have try lineout microbrute to aux monotron and only sound a load and fixed tone...like electricity high tension!! please help me...I buy a monotron delay only to play berlin old school...I love berlin old school...thanx for your time .regardsfrom 32° lat south, Valparaíso, Chile
Simply amazing!
This just made me wanna get a monotron to use w my MB.. incredible
Great demo.
Brilliant. Just bought a Monotron!
Amazing work! Would love to hear it with some drums too 👍🏼
Love your videos man! Take care! :)
Very nice! Talent is greater than a collection of expensive gear. How did you record all of that? Was the bass the only track that was sequenced?
Thanks!, Yes, bass was sequenced, the rest is played
Wow, this is a really great video! After watching just two videos, I hit subscribe. Keep these videos coming, they've amazing quality value!
So having the MicroBrute and the Monotron, is that all you need for this set-up?

Monophonic means one note at a time. If you hear 4, 5 or 6 notes (tones) there must be sth more. Logic.
Or you get 4 Microbrutes,
Or you use multiple synths
Or you record and mix sygnals one by one.
So the picture is only mono synt and delay.
Bth I like the music
SynthMania, greetings and thanks!

That was awesome!
Nice man I love your videos I want to ad the 70s and 80s electronic sounds to my modern tracks I have a Roland Jupiter 6 and a jp8000 I also get great sounds from my electribe
And now - some wind effects by routing radio static into the MicroBrute and playing around with the filters!

I think Edgar Froese would have approved :-)
definitely!!
What do you mean by that? Do you want to suggest that he is writing music for porn movies from above?
Cool track! Any suggestions for bands that have this sound? Tangerine Dream I already got.
torq21 Klaus Schultz,
I appreciate the recommendation!
Hello
Thanks for this wonderful video showing how good cheap synths can sound.
I tried to use my microbrute & monotron delay but it sounds so low that it's hard to get a decent sound level with my audio interface (everything needs to be set at the maximum sensibility - I use a Roland quad capture).
Is it the same for you or did I miss something?
Thanks for your help!
You probably have a stereo 1/8" plug that doesn't catch the mono signal hence you getting an extremely low signal - try using a mono plug / cable
@@SynthManiaDotCom I'll try, thanks!
HI HOW did you made the sickens on the the monotrol
with semprini.
That's awesome buddy, Monotron Delay it's really a must have for all Synth-lovers...I recently made a piece for the Monotron for my Thesis at collegue. It written down to paper(graphic sheet),...you know what, I could send it to you, and you could give your own interpretation... buonanotte!!!
Excellent . wow very very imspiring !!

Thanks! Yes, you can use paper patch templates to "save" the sounds. Old school way
I just bought a micro brute a few weeks ago its my 4th analog synth I love its simplicity and many times 1 LFO beats 2 tbh my Bass Station 2 LFO 1 I absolutely can't stand... the micro brute is a beast nice work!
I am a total newbie in the world of the synth and I just got a Micro Brute. How do you keep the sound without holding on a key when playing with the sequencer?
There's a switch in the MicroBrute editor, swich it from "Note On" to "Hold"
I did not even know there was a MicroBrute editor hehe, I guess I will download it and check it out. I have been playing with my headphones only all this time.
Thanks for the response and the great videos!
I can't figure out how small the Microbrute is next to your Modular Synth !
Hello,
How did you fix your sequenzer ? I cant figure out why mine is not playing 😑😑😑 It starts to play when i press a button, but no from itself :()
Greets,
Julian
Sam Jenkins I love your knowledge ❤ manz thanks and hugs :3
i repeated this arpeggio on Dune 3. But this monotron thing is awesome
