  • Time to take the slightly scabby old top off my Festool MFT table and put on a replacement, at least that was the plan............

    I really like your videos. However i find the front of your shed in the intro a slight irritation. Please can you fix the central trellis below the window so that it has the horizontal bars to the front and they line up with those either side? It would look so much better IMHO...

      Hi Charles,
      Couldn't agree more, however I was a bit constrained by the bits I had left from cutting down the 6ft trellis panel. As a result there wasn't enough length of timber to properly match the spacings on the other trellis. It's on the list of snagging as soon as I get a bit of appropriate treated timber!

    Hi Peter, I’ve just ordered a 81cm MFT and metal workbench to go into my 6’x6’ workshop and to create a L shape with my proper wooden workbench. I doubt I will be doing any cutting on it as I saw outdoors with my Bosch workmate style thingy because of my respiratory difficulties. Or I use my table saw which is also moved outdoors because of said breathing problems and I can’t get in my shop unless I shift it. I also believe MFT dust is just about the worst thing for your lungs in the true wood substitutes. I’ll have my drill press, bench grinder on it but it’s mainly for storage as I only have one drawer in my workbench. What protection do you recommend please? I used Danish oil on my wooden bench.
    Another great video that I missed and I think most of your viewers would have had the same realisation as you at the exact same time in the video. I know I did. How old was the top please before you had to turn it?

      Hi Mark, the mft was purchased second hand, as I'm too tight to buy one new, and was in that state when I bought it. Fortunately the replacement top came with it, which I subsequently used on the under bench cart. It's now had about 4 months of use and still remains pretty clean. I use a sacrificial ply or celotex when cutting on it, and a disposable cover most of the time. I gave the tops a coat of water based polyurethane, followed by a beeswax and the only downside is that everything slips about on the surface, so Danish oil may be a better solution. Cutting with the TS55 keeps dust to a minimum, and as you note MDF is not good for you.
      If your only mainly using it to support tools, and not as a clamping bench, think about using a solid top, or at least minimise the number of holes. It's quite annoying to lose small parts down the holes, hence my small rubber lined tray for keeping parts together.

      the small shed Thank you very much Peter, I really appreciate your comprehensive rely.
      As I have holes in both my wooden table and my Bosch I wasn’t going to bother with any. I also have 2 wooden vices on my table so I was going to put a very small engineering vice on the new bench. Isn’t it amazing how much we can fit in a small small and still make it work?
      Have a fantastic Christmas and New Year and thank you for all the advice you’ve given me over the last few months.

    Impressive little corner of your little shed. Look forward to seeing the overall build of the under-bench cart. Looking at the effort to pull it out you could do with motorising it - perhaps with a wee remote control unit.😂 Enjoyed the moment of realisation that you could use the B side of the bench top.👍

      Hi Norman,
      The cart is almost complete in real time, and the videos to complete are due up on 12th, 19th, and 26th. Materials for another 2 carts arrived yesterday, and I shall do single videos for these, to show variations. I have modified the design for the remaining carts to reduce the amount of aluminium, and give another 20mm of vertical room, as the other carts have much less weight to carry.

    Hello Peter, Loved this video and how fab was that being able to use the same work top which by the way came up lovely after a good sand and polish !! Did you buy the bench and cart as a kit if so can i ask from where?

    • @thesmallshed
      @thesmallshed  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Joanna, the bench is a used Festool MFT table, they are a bit too pricey new but I managed to find a decent second hand one.
      The cart is built from components sourced from varios places, and all of the videos are contained in one of the playlists. The unboxing one gave sources for most of the components.
      I have simplified the design for the remaining under bench carts, as they don't require drawer runners, the first of the simplified design ones comes out in a week or so.

    Hi Peter, Where did you purchase the 20mm 45 Degree hand trimmer (company and part number please), regards corrie

    • @peterlloyd2306
      @peterlloyd2306 5 лет назад

      Hi Corrie, the trimmer is from Axminster, the UKJ Technology Parf chamber tool, code 104464. www.axminster.co.uk/ujk-technology-parf-chamfer-tool-104464
      It's a great piece of kit, though having to chamfer the whole mft top is a bit of a pain.
