20 francs Marianne Coq: rarity and value

- The gold coins of 20 francs called "Marianne Coq" are among the best known French coins in France and around the world. These pieces are called "Marianne" or "Coq" because of the engravings they represent.
The front of the coin depicts a draped bust of Marianne wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with oak leaves. Marianne is the personification of the French Republic.
On the pile side of the room we can see a cock proudly erected, surrounded by the motto of the Republic: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity. The rooster symbolizes the French people.
The drawing of 20 gold coins Marianne Coq is the work of Jules Chaplain, an undisputed master of the medal and the French coin in the nineteenth century who was already recognized and admired during his lifetime. The engraving of his splendid pieces of 20 francs gold has earned him to pass to posterity. Marianne's portrait was taken up on the Paris World's Fair medal in 1900. France's new monetary emblem achieved universal recognition.
The 20-gold Marianne Coq gold coins were made between 1899 and 1914. Identical pieces were refurbished in 1921 and between 1951 and 1960, with the same corners as the pieces manufactured before 1914 and without a change of vintage.
The circulation of Marianne Coq's 20-franc gold coins is an extension of the long suite of 20-franc gold coins inaugurated by Napoleon I in 1803 as part of Franc Germinal. The pieces of 20 francs Gold Coq take in all respects the characteristics of the 20 francs coins created by Napoleon I. They weigh 6.45 grams of pure gold at 900 thousandths or 90 percent if preferred and their diameter is 21 millimeters. Each piece contains 5.80 grams of pure gold and 10% of copper alloy.
After the disaster of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and the end of the Second Empire of Napoleon III, the Third Republic took over the manufacture of 20 gold coins with coins at the Dupré Genie. This type of coin first appeared during the French Revolution and was taken under the Second Republic in 1848 and 1849. But towards the end of the 19th century, the Republican regime, a time weighed against a new monarchical restoration, was firmly established. Public opinion demanded the adoption of new currencies.

About the coin, De Foville, who was the Director of the Mint said: "The gold coin signed Chaplain is superb and we forgive him willingly what some critics have called his anachronisms and the martial profile of the Republic. "He added that we could also forgive this new piece" the militaristic gait of Gallic rooster and on the edge, the old motto "God Protects France", that it would have been foolish to make it disappear.
Speaking of anachronism De Foville evokes the fact that the Gauls did not use the rooster as their emblem. This is a later symbolic construction. And about the style of the play, De Foville rightly qualifies the play as martial and militaristic. The French Republic wanted to assert itself against the growing German threat.
This militaristic dimension was subsequently highlighted in a poster by Abel Faivre published during the First World War. We see the Gallic rooster of the 20-franc gold coin attack a German soldier.
The piece also reflects the great developments of the time, since from 1907, after the law of separation of Church and State the motto "God Protects France" was finally replaced by the motto "Freedom Equality fraternity".
Even if the militarist dimension of the piece could be discussed, on the aesthetic level, the 20 francs gold coins Marianne Coq retain the taste of a beautiful era.

However, more than 200,000 coins were reprocessed in 1921. A little less than 37.5 million coins 20 francs cock were manufactured between 1951 and 1960. Qu'entendez-vous par "à l'envers" ? Voulez-vous dire qu'il s'agit d'une "frappe médaille" au lieu d'une "frappe monnaie" ? Ou alors, le coq regarde à droite au lieu de regarder à gauche ? Quel est son poids ? Avez-vous une photo disponible, en gros plan et bien nette ?
