I thought the eyes were the problem, but I think it might be the mouth instead. I think it would have looked better if they had gone with a more realistic lip shape like how they do minifigure lips for women.
I like the look of this set. It adds to the variety of what Lego art has given us so far. There is a lot of diversity and nuance with such an iconic painting that add to the wonderment. I am not surprised that there was lots of backlash, there are a lot of people who are disappointed with the original as well, as it is small and unassuming, especially with hundreds of people trying to get a look at it at the same time. But I think that for a recreation that is the point. To generate the same gravitas with a different medium.
I know a lot of people didn't like the Mona Lisa set but I actually liked it. I know its not like the real one but I never thought it would be. I see a ton of praise towards the galaxy art set but I actually disliked that one. I guess it really just shows some people have their preferences. It would be cool to see them redo the Mona Lisa later down the line to look a bit closer to the real one though.
This guy has never hung a painting on the wall in his life, has he? 😂 The fact that he let four picture hanging strips sticking out from The Great Wave off Kanagawa is really getting my OCD going. Love the googly eyes, tho.
They surely let Mr Magoo design this "painting" that is in fact a crime against world cultural heritage. You absolutely improved it because there is definitely no way this lego set could be made any worse. It´s no Mona Lisa but a grumpy Klingon warrior on ice moon Rura Pente
I feel like the blank face option was why this set’s release date was pushed back. The initial public reaction to the face was so bad that they pushed the release date and added the blank face option.
If I tried recreating an artwork with a face in Lego, I would try going the minifig face route. Almost the way that Lego set 76393 does Harry Potter as a brick-built version of a minifig, I'd try Mona Lisa as a brick-built minifig version.
Dunow what’s the big deal people have with this set. The Face is perfectly fine as a Lego set, very good I would even say. And let’s be honest, if you find this creepy, take a look at the original: it’s already unsettling to look at.
This set just needed a bit more 3D work on it like the other 2 art sets, essentially this is a 3 or 4 layered almost pixel art build. The gold frame I feel like took too much away from their budget for the detail. Maybe a scale change really so that more of the face could be brick built, and the hands which point out towards the viewer are more 3D too, rather than just shaded differently. The Spiderman poster set was more 3D than this.
You sold me on this set, even tho I’m not a fan of the portrait or how the face appears in LEGO form. I thought I might like to build it and then MOC my own portrait instead, like a portrait of a cat or something. But then I saw the googly eyes… problem solved!
Its lego for heaven sake! If you do not like it then change it or skip it. Personaly its pre ordered. I cannot wait to build it. Also the great wave looks good, but the thought of putting on all those 1x1 is a pass for me. Happy for those who love it.
The LEGO Mona Lisa is a transformation from an infinitely variable medium to a very limited medium. There is not enough resolution in LEGO to reproduce the subtle painted details of the original, so the LEGO artists have used their talent to give us a fascinating representation of the original. The results might not be to everyone's taste and you could even question if it was appropriate to try (looking at you 21042 Statue of Liberty), but I wouldn't call it "flawed".
9:31 your on-screen disclaimer about colors under your cooler studio lights vs warmer lights at home is the main reason I insist on cooler lights at home. I want my indoor lighting as close to midday sunlight as possible, precisely so that I can see colors accurately. In general, but also specifically for Lego building. It is _so_ much harder to see some of the Lego colors under warm (or low-CRI) lights.
The Wednesday conspiracy space is gone. It's good to see the Our Family Fun Love @Home is still upside down in the background. I think the googly eyes look good. I mean the ones added to Mona Lisa, not Matt's 😂
I agree that your 'solution' makes this set miles better. But still... I just don't like the look of it. Now, full disclosure; I don't like 'lego art' in general. Lego for me is about minifigure scale worlds coming alive. The frame is nice though; I'll give it that.
You fixed the Mona Lisa. Not just the LEGO version
Your custom googly eyes are BRILLIANT! That alone makes me want to buy this set!!!
If I was to get this set I’d mod it to have a minifigure eyes and smile instead (like mentioned in the video). Just a little cartoony fun.
The reveal of the improved Mona Lisa is the first time I've ever applauded a RUclips video.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was thinking that to the right of the mouth where the two tiles join gives Mona Lisa her subtle smile.

Love the googly eyes, tho.
Imagine if you put the Lego ideas cat eyes on the Mona Lisa set
The googly eyes actually fixes the mouth.. makes it much more resemblant of the original painting. 🙂
Googly eyes 10/10 perfection
No notes
just finished this set and it is my favorite one yet!
Flock to Lourdes? You mean The Louvre?

going with an oldschool minifig smile would get it out of the uncanny valley and make the viewers smile. It’s a great opportunity for a joke.

I've seen the Mona Lisa using dots and it looks a ton better than this. I was so excited for it. Then, I saw the actual set…
I have done Mona in the dots.
Hilarious 😂. Good fix. 👍🏻😁

This review helps sell me more on the Great Wave.
Hahahaha!!! That googly eyes! Perfect
Am I the only one who will buy this set for MOCs? 😂 tons of tiles and plates + golden bricks for some golden room

I think this is just hilarious 😂 🎉❤
I went from no way to I'll catch it on sale.
Ahahah another good laugh seeing this set. Watch Stud Lords video. The face in this is horrendous. Amazed they are still bringing it out!
How about re-moving Mona Lisa all together? Just building empty backround. Would it be easy to do? Or making Mona Lisas skin yellow?
Just Got Mine In A Slightly Crushed Box For 30% Off‼️👍🏽🤗
02:13 the flaw? Remove all the brown pieces for the hai and it could be your self portrait? 😂

I don’t understand how people are criticizing it like if it is a piece of art. It’s LEGO omg
The Lego version is a very good representation... of Peter Steele.
It’s disappointing how the focal point of the painting is the one part they couldn’t get right
The art sets work best if they made use of the three dimensionality of the LEGO medium. Who would buy this Mona Lisa instead of a regular one?
I love the frame, I like most of the painting, I don't like how the face turned out.
This style of art is called "New Ugliness".
You never played with LEGO as a kid!
Popular theory is that the subject wasn't a woman at all, but rather a self portrait of Da Vinci in drag
thats me

It works but not as a recreation of renaissance art but ironic pop art kitsch.
It is a little better without printed tiles. Lego should stick to more abstract art. Once you cross into uncanny valley, the whole picture is ruined.
I hope I don’t start liking hands…

I have the art sets but will be skipping this one

I’ve always wanted a Lego portrait of Jimmy Carr!
This set is the worst ofLego's mostly bad sets. But this is pure horror and somehow shows that lego is at the end. Only fanboy products.
This set looks dreadful
Wow this comes off as really pretentious.
IMO some art should not be touch I will not buy this set or it would not be built if given to me!
