All the comments seem so old! Is anyone else still listening to this in 2024? Ive seen Kate live dozens of times but never seen her play this one. Shame. It's hauntingly beautiful.
I love her to bits and will not hear a bad word about her, kates songs are wonderful and many about her life and her family which are just honest and heartfelt and deliverred by Kate with the brilliant style she has.
I can't stop listening to this woman sing, and I'm a bluegrasser. Bill Monroe talked about the "ancient tone" in bluegrass - the old Scots/English/Irish stuff that came over with the immigrants to the Appalachians and planted the seeds for bluegrass. Some of the best murder ballads in bluegrass come straight from England 200 years ago. Thank you, Pandora, for pointing me towards Kate Rusby!
Yes, I am still listening to it! And still using it as the inspiration for my own rendition of this song. It is indeed hauntingly beautiful and her phrasing and cadence is perfect.. People do listen to stuff without commenting....especially if you listen to something a lot, actually, one is not going to comment every time lol!
I count myself a dedicated fan. She's marvellous. Saw her in Oxford, waited for an hour until she came out the back of the theatre, only to find that she had to get straight back on the road! Gutted!
I just love Kate Rusby singing this song & when first heard it I thought it was Allyn water's which is near my home in Wrecsam North Wales * I love Kate with any song with her lovely Yorkshire accent which unlike some singers who try to disguise their local dialect Kate is Proud of hers *****
I am not from the UK, but I would suppose that she adapts her accent a bit. If she used a full Yorkshire accent, I would imagine it would be hard to understand. But maybe not. Anyway I can understand the texts much better than most singers, including American singers. I have heard that politicians often try to adopt a standard pronunciation when the want a career in politics. As well in America. Of course some people are better at accents than others. I cannot imitate other accents than my own, so I suppose no one can claim I was affecting a high status accent. I do wish I could do some other accents though. Among others, Irish, Scottish, Received, perhaps also Texas or Southern US ones, Australian or New Zealand. But I cannot.
Just beautiful. She does not get the coverage here in U.K. that she deserves. Nevertheless, she has many numerous fans and I am so pleased to learn that she has admirers in USA.
Beirtrice I would say it's a traditional Scottish Song or at least the Annan is a river in Scotland & even though I now live in Wales , I was born and brought up in Fanad in Co Donegal where I lived until 1976 & then fell in love with a beautiful Welsh lady & I love Kate singing any song in her lovely Yorkshire accent which she is proud of God Bless & Kate's husband is a fiddle player in her Band & he is a Scot*****
What did she do to deserve such a caustic comment? I don't think she 'Swiped' anything, I heard this long ago and can't even remember the source. Personally grateful to have the lyrics and such a nice rendition. Lighten up!!
Some people just love to hate & me I have been a Kate Rusby fan from the very first time I heard her & her incredible band including her husband a fantastic fiddle player who is a Scot lad & with a singer like Kate & her lovely Yorkshire accent which she is proud of they couldn't fail *****
There is a picture on wikipedia of Hoddom Bridge over the River Annan complete with "willow wand" and "moody river." Fanciful, I know, but I like to think it's the location for this song.
A beautiful song. I especially like the accompaniment and Kate Rusby's beautiful voice. Really impressive Admittedly, though, I do not really like sad stories. People who risk their life for love seem a bit foolish to me, but I suppose that the point is not realism but showng how sad it is when people are intolerant of true lovers. A bittersweet, sad song, but also beautiful.
Oh, Annan waters' wondrous deep And my love Ann is wondrous bonny I'm loathe that she should wet her feet Because I love her best of any Go saddle for me the bonny grey mare Go saddle her and make her ready For I must cross the stream tonight Or never more I'll see my lady He's ridden over field and fen O'er moor and moss and many's the mire But the spurs of steel were sore to bite Sparks from the mare's hoofs flew like fire Oh, the mare flew o'er the moor and moss And when she reached the Annan waters She couldn't have ridden a furlong more Had a thousand whips been laid upon he And woe betide you Annan waters By night you are a gloomy river And over you I'll build a bridge That never more true love can sever Oh boatman, put off your boat Put off your boat for gold and money For I must cross the stream tonight Or never more I'll see my lady Oh, the sides are steep, the waters deep From bank to brae the water's pouring And the bonny grey mare she sweats for fear She stands to hear the water roaring And he has tried to swim the stream And he swam on both strong and steady But the river was deep and strength did fail And never more he'll see his lady Oh, woe betide the willow wand And woe betide the bush and briar For they broke beneath my true love's hand When strength did fail and limbs did tire And woe betide you Annan waters By night you are a gloomy river And over you I'll build a bridge That never more true love can sever That never more (That never more) true love can sever That never more (That never more) true love can sever That never more (That never more) true love can sever
I am not safe on this wild voyage. For I could drown, distracted by that voice, And nevermore to rise again, I'll sink happy on this beggar's choice. Oh, turn the boat around, my boys. And sail me fast away from here. Or I'll be dragged onto the rocks, That hide within my inner ear.

On the other hand, given the singer and the song title, it would have taken about two seconds Googling to work out what album it's from. So relax, for fuck's sake.
Ahah its always funny to see that people have their own problems in life, and how it can be so much different. Some fight for peace and others are worried about the missing title of an album
All the comments seem so old! Is anyone else still listening to this in 2024? Ive seen Kate live dozens of times but never seen her play this one. Shame. It's hauntingly beautiful.
First time hearing this. New to Kate Rusby's work. Just wish there was more English Folk music around.
Yes! A very live lot of listeners. It's the kind of stuff you never fall out of love with.
This song refreshes my soul anytime I remember to lean on it for its assistance. I need to remember more.
I've come back to her videos many times over the years (Aug 2024 now)
I repeated this song today during my pipes lesson
This is the song that literally stopped me in my tracks as I was driving. I had to pull over and observe the tears on my face.
found this underrated gem after years hearing Kate. greetings from Austria :-)
I love her to bits and will not hear a bad word about her, kates songs are wonderful and many about her life and her family which are just honest and heartfelt and deliverred by Kate with the brilliant style she has.
One of the most beautiful song ever!! And Kate Rusby my biggest love!

Still listening to her.
Take a drop of rain and fill it with an Angels song. Our Kate is the warmest shower. x
This is my favorite of Kates songs. Its so beautiful and mournful, and its such a sad, romantic story, it always makes me tear up.
Well... if we're being anal here. It's a nic Jones cover. Show some love for the classics;) trust me. He's worth your time.
This is proper music. I wish they'd play more music like this on national radio.
I'm lucky enough to attend her Christmas show every year in Huddersfield. She makes Christmas complete, does our Yorkshire lass.
Precious jewel here, people!
The song, the singer, and the experience.
I will listen to that lady till the end of my life, whatever she will sing, she completes my world
Her voice is both light and a little deep which is absolutely amazingly beautiful

My home is in Annan Water. It's a pretty river where we are in it's upper reaches. Nice to discover the song.
Lovely song of heroic love. A character train mostly missing today. This lady sings everything with her emotions inserted. A true professional.
I count myself a dedicated fan.
She's marvellous.

My God, this is incredible.
Oh mama. Your voice is silk to my hoary ears. You sing both me and my three children to sleep more often than you know. Thanks for all you do milady.
I know that Sandy Denny, one of my favorites, would've loved Kate!! This is just simply beautiful....:)
Thank you. I whish to meet you 💜
Beautiful.
Another haunting song from Kate.
Ok out of all her songs this is seriously the best it really is
A haunting melody. Kate has a beautiful voice and the instrumentation in this song is awesome..
it is!
Peter Green Yes a beautiful haunting Scottish song
Annan is a river in Scotland. :)

Thanks Rusby08 for posting this.

too true ...whats not to love about her???...this song is about as good as it gets !
What did she do to deserve such a caustic comment? I don't think she 'Swiped' anything, I heard this long ago and can't even remember the source. Personally grateful to have the lyrics and such a nice rendition. Lighten up!!

See her halo shine for Angelic song our Kate does sing and sweetly too. X
absolutely one of my favorite Kate Rusby songs, but so sad
I come back here every year or so. Love this album, ‘r since I came across it in a stack of store CDs at one of my first jobs.
just discovering her music, what a lovely song!
one of my favorite songs by Kate Rusby
You did a beautiful job putting this video together! With the pictures and the music....BRAVO! Que Bella!
I stand corrected, thank you, a lovely rendition of a scottish song :-)

this version needs to go on Spotify I prefer it to the one that's available on there
she is beautifal!!!
Infectious voice✈
I find this song also especially wonderful.
Oh, Annan waters' wondrous deep
And my love Ann is wondrous bonny
I'm loathe that she should wet her feet
Because I love her best of any
Go saddle for me the bonny grey mare
Go saddle her and make her ready
For I must cross the stream tonight
Or never more I'll see my lady
He's ridden over field and fen
O'er moor and moss and many's the mire
But the spurs of steel were sore to bite
Sparks from the mare's hoofs flew like fire
Oh, the mare flew o'er the moor and moss
And when she reached the Annan waters
She couldn't have ridden a furlong more
Had a thousand whips been laid upon he
And woe betide you Annan waters
By night you are a gloomy river
And over you I'll build a bridge
That never more true love can sever
Oh boatman, put off your boat
Put off your boat for gold and money
For I must cross the stream tonight
Or never more I'll see my lady
Oh, the sides are steep, the waters deep
From bank to brae the water's pouring
And the bonny grey mare she sweats for fear
She stands to hear the water roaring
And he has tried to swim the stream
And he swam on both strong and steady
But the river was deep and strength did fail
And never more he'll see his lady
Oh, woe betide the willow wand
And woe betide the bush and briar
For they broke beneath my true love's hand
When strength did fail and limbs did tire
And woe betide you Annan waters
By night you are a gloomy river
And over you I'll build a bridge
That never more true love can sever
That never more (That never more) true love can sever
That never more (That never more) true love can sever
That never more (That never more) true love can sever
amazing music, thnxx for posting :)))
more bridges, less pain. yes
I am not safe on this wild voyage.

I'll sink happy on this beggar's choice.
Oh, turn the boat around, my boys.
And sail me fast away from here.

Always loved this. Found it was taken from Nic Jones, but both versions stand.
I thought it was a traditional Irish song? That was how it was taught to me as a child anyhow. She sings it beautifully though
Why doesn't America have singers like this?
Thanks, Rusby08, for putting all these great songs up, with lyrics. Are you part of that great family enterprise, or a dedicated fan?
It is an easy thing for one whose foot is on the outside of calamity to give advice and to rebuke the sufferer.

I feel bad for the mare.

Try listening to kierstenmh she has got a georgeous voice as well! :)

no mention of the Nic Jones version?! Equally as brilliant as this
not to mention The Voice Squad's a capella version
And I sang it in the shower yesterday and that was not'alf good also.
Learned from the singing of Nic Jones...
So I guess the boatman didn't let him use the boat.
On the other hand, given the singer and the song title, it would have taken about two seconds Googling to work out what album it's from. So relax, for fuck's sake.

I want to have a million of her babies.
WHATS IS A SNIFTER
A shot of what you fancy!
cf. the mayor of Casterbridge
As a matter of fact, I could almost swear she is Sandy reincarnated.....the similarity is uncanny
no relation to gunnerkrigg court then :( shame cause the song RULES.
Actually, he named the river in the comic after this song, rather than the actual river in Scotland.
