Very nice video. I like your approach and style. I’ve used the grey 1200 and 1500 on about 10 Gunpla models with lots of small detailed parts. I also use the leveling thinner by Mr Hobby. That combo never covers up any detail. Even though I’ve primed with it for for many hours, I still picked up some pointers. Subscribed.
Thank you for this review, I've gotten fed up with Stynylrez - they're either amazing products or clog my brush up, one or the other. So after hunting around for a suitable replacement to use in my airbrush I've settled on the 1500 black and thinner, on my research travels I found this video. This has convinced me to get some, I just gotta wait a while because in the UK it's harder to find than hen's teeth lol
I'm glad it was helpfull.. I've used all there different types an I realy like it.. you just have to thin it down. Hold great to styrene and resin.. I'm very happy
Rick: two things: 1. I love that you don’t over-weather and rust your models like some experts and 2. How the H*ll do you keep your work area so clean?? Dan the Fan
Thank you for the compliments. I love to weather and "beat up" the build but your right. Must people over do it. Less is best!! On the work area.. ya.. that's when I shoot video. I'm constantly cleaning and reorganizing. You should see the work station right now.. looks like a bomb went off. 🤣
Fantastic review, please allow me to mention that at mr hobbys site they propose the 1500 grade to be thinned with mr rapid thinner, because it needs stronger thinner due to its consistency etc.
In practice, both MCRT (Rapid Thinner) and MCLT (Leveling Thinner) work well. I have regularly airbrushed 1500 + MCLT for many years without issue - it gives a satin finish. (That is my ‘go to’ primer.) I have also airbrushed 1500 + MCRT for years - it gives a flat finish. Both are done with an Iwata High Performance airbrush with 0.18 needle at 20-25psi at a mixture of approximately 1:1 (but then thinned a bit more).
@@Ricks135scalemodels They just realesed the black version in 1000 grit. However its in the new aqueous surfacer range instead. I have tried it before it is some sort of solvent based too, it only have a mild alcohol like smell. I think thinning it with the leveling thinner might help in making it more durable.
That levelling thinner seems to be the go to product when everything else fails, as a matter of interest what did you use to clean your airbrush after using that paint Rick?
Does it leave a sandy look after spraying on clear gloss coats? I’m having issues with the current primer I have and am looking to switch. All my models come out with a speckled sandy look… not sure how to describe it.
I have not used it on a smooth finish. I have used Tamiya fine primer on those applications with great results. I will say the primed finish look very smooth though. Hope that helps.
I clear all paint. Drop a little Tamiya airbrush cleaner in bowl.. rub with a cotton swab to loosen up then blow run all threw brush. I follow up with lysol all purpose cleaner run that threw then drop a drop of airbrush oil. and
Hello, om using valejo paints and clear but im not happy with the clear so i will try mr hobby , does it need thinner or can you spray it right out of the jar ?
I have been using Tamiya clear. I do have to thin it a little to get it to spray. I just got mr hobby clear but I have not used it yet. I seams to be the same as Tamiya. Just thin 5 to 10% no more.
I see you really blasted that stuff on, I was priming with gray surfacer 1200 today and it took me forever to build up layers, maybe I was being too cautious... Did it obstruct any details once it dried?
@@Ricks135scalemodels good to hear, maybe I need to try spraying like that myself... tested it on few miniatures and Im not really happy with the result, some areas are flooded while others are barely covered, maybe I took too long and the bottom layers dried out and didnt level properly, so spraying thicker layer and faster would help here?
Well . I've used it 4 times. 2 black 1500 and 2 gray 1200.. both thinned 50 50. 26 psi. My passes are quick. No issues on over spray. Iwata airbrush eclipse hp-cs I believe time is .5
Thanks for a straightforward and helpful video 👍
Thank you
Well all the questions that had are answered now, really good info 👍🏼
Hope it was helpfull

Mr Hobby products are the best. You want to try Mr Hobby paints. Better than than smelly, sticky old Tamiya. Good demo.
I have been changing over to Mr Hobby products. I've had great results with them they are outstanding.
Thanks Rick. Very informative review
Thank you
Thanks for this info. Ordering some today!
I'm realy happy with it.
That leveling thinner was a game changer for me.
I am so happy. It's a great product for sure.
Does the leveling thinner have any smell
There is a very light smell as it's a laquar I believe but it's not at all strong.
@@Ricks135scalemodels how smelly was it compared to other thinner thanks
Very very light in my opinion. Standard laquar thinner is 10 times stronger then there thinner leveler. Very comfortable.
Good tips, thanks.
Thank you

I haven't tried that but I've had perfect results so far. I'll look into that and give it a try. See if it changes anything.

@glenncauley9102 nice!. .. u realy like the product.
This is how I also paint my viechles. Wish they had this black primer in grit 1000 because it covers up more while 1500 is like a base colour.
Ya. I'm not sure why the dont have it in multiple grits and colors.

Nice and interesting review Rick .
Keep on the good work buddy .
Stay safe and well there :)
Thank you Ozzy
nice review keep them coming
Thank you
Thank you!!!
Its a great product Rick I often use it there is also a Mahogany colour and white all work brilliantly
Thank you Greg. I'm real happy. I saw all the options and I see so many options. I'm glad I found out about it.
Hi, can i use the finishing 1500 black after surfacer 1000?, both are spray cans version. that would make it the primer 2 coats.
Yes. Should not make a difference but the black can darken the overall look.
@@Ricks135scalemodels ok..thanks for advise.
@razif6916 no problem, the primer color can really be used to accent your paint.
@@Ricks135scalemodels isee..thnks..will play around then with it.

Very true!!
I´m curios about the needle size in your airbrush. Or, maybe that´s not critical using these products.
I've used it in my iwata .05 and my border .02.. worked great in both.
It is a great product! Nice review Rick. Is that a weasel? Thanks for sharing, take care and keep up the good work my friend.
Thank-you George. I like this product a lot. The kit is a Revell SPZ Marder 1a3.
That levelling thinner seems to be the go to product when everything else fails, as a matter of interest what did you use to clean your airbrush after using that paint Rick?
I should have talked about that. I ran about 2 ml of tamiya airbrush cleaner as a habit then fantastic house hold cleaner. Came out perfect.
@@Ricks135scalemodels Thank's for replying..
@@Ricks135scalemodels You can use isopropyl alcohol for cleaning, cheaper and less toxic than tamiya AB cleaner and works pretty well.
I've done that also.. does work good.

Does the leveling thinner have any odors
I though I answered this. Sorry for the delay. Very little odor.
@@Ricks135scalemodels it is okay thanks I am getting some and use it for clear coat
Hey great review , What brand is that marder greetings from germany ;-)
Gutenberg tag!! It is a Revell 1/35 1a3. Thank you!!
If I were you I'd use it with tamiya paints and not that x20a. Your results will be much better, plus the laquer is tougher
I plan to try that but I have 2 new bottles of tamiya to go threw. Definitely a good idea. Thank you Rick!!
Just a comment for the algorithm
Thank you sir!!

I would think you should be go. If you can adjust your flow rate then I would say get something like a pice of styrene sheet and try out.
