Ahhh.....a much-needed gear and gadget fix. I needed that. After having just spent CAD$1,050 to build out my mini toolkit, though, my girlfriend came running into the room at the sound of Jon's voice, when I started this video, screaming "nooooooo!!!!!!!" 🤣 Good times.
@@stephenbarabas6286 You're just wee bit obnoxious, aren't ya? The exercise, my friend, was to exactly recreate the compact tool kit Jon put together. The cost was what it was...incidental.
9:25 The biggest problem with the Sofirn IF24 is actually the rotary switch and the lack of a lock-out function, which is very susceptible to accidental contact. I once managed to almost puncture my favorite backpack with the black light stick. Another point mentioned is the unnecessary colorful party light and the lack of an option to switch directly to red light. For me, the Olight Arkfeld Pro is the best all-round lamp so far. Cheer´s
I really like a strobe function, but it's useless if it's not instantly accessible imho, no use if you have to cycle through the whole menu (and possibly skip it)
Thanks for the suggestion of the Tau 2 powerbank. It is exactly what I have been looking for - a very small, light, backup power source. I don't think much of the Surevival Pen, though. It is rather silly and ugly as well.
Thanks for this wonderful update. My shopping neuron would like to buy everything you feature so tantalisingly. On this occasion I confess that I did find the Sofirn IF24 irresistible so bought one direct from their website. To my surprise, the price was much lower than anticipated and delivery took just a few days. The light itself is just what I hoped it would be. I am a fan of LED Lenser gear but the Sofirn is now my favourite.
"A bit of a niche product" is the kindest, most tactful way I've ever heard anyone say "it's overpriced". Of course that doesn't mean I won't buy it. Wish I had held out for the IF24 now. I have the IF23 and it's a good light but the interface definitely needed the improvement.
Changing the colour of the led from red is good for using maps or charts with contour lines as many have red contours which are impossible to see under some torches.
If the James Brand driver used double sided extended bits it would be more functional. Would love a cheaper less fancy version of that figgit ring. That magnetic cable is awesome though.
Great video as always, Jon. Products that charge with older, non-USC C connectors are non-starters for me which is a shame with those cool retro speakers.
The Sofirn IF24 is close, but it needs to remember state, especially if I turn it off at each of the 3 options. Very frustrating. It is nice overall, but I find the Wurkkos HD01 flat light with green laser pointer a bit more fitting for what I typically need. Though the Sofirn does have a bigger battery that is swappable. Would be nice if either added a 365nm UV light. I find that really useful as well as a double clip.
The magnetic cable is cool and all, but I think retractable cables are slept on. they can be any length you want and just pull and let go to bundle up the cable.
I wish the Sofirn flashlight had the form factor of the James screwdriver. I like thin, flat EDC gear and a thin flat flashlight would be oh so comfortable in the pocket. Especially if you are rolling around on the floor trying to fix something. A big square or round light would be really uncomfortable pressed hard into your leg.
Picked myself up a new EDC pocket knife from COVACURE UK on Amazon - 2.4in folding non-locking blade with skeletonised handle. Light, with a good blade - and plenty of fidget appeal. £10. 😉
I love Jon’s reviews, longtime subscriber and fan. I’m curious, is his style of delivery (the exaggerated pauses, monotone delivery, and the “and now to tuck you in to bed” conclusion to every item’s review) something common to British presenters, or is it just a Jon thing?
One thing I don’t understand about edc screwdrivers and wish others would start incorporating is an extension of some sort. That would truly make it an all in package and make it so much more useful…
Jon, Do you use noise cancelling head phones on long flights? I'd be very interested in your thoughts given how you evaluate travel gear. Please let us know which you use and/or recommend. I've used Sony noise cancelling ear pods and been happy with them. I'm now thinking of getting some over the ear headphones for audio books, movies, etc. 🍻
@@JonGadget Thanks for the reply. I agree that over the ear add size and weight. I've been looking into it as some of the movies I've watched would've benefited from less ambient noise. Action movies aren't a problem of course. 🍻
I have the Sofrin IF23. It's a great light, but I do like how much easier it is to access the different modes and how more compact the new one is. Not sure I'm a fan of all the color options. I think I would have been fine with a static color and maybe an RGB fade for entertainment purposes. The cop lights are dumb as hell.
We have several ponds in our area with mowed lawns atheistic nice. A women who is new to the area went missing recently- thinking foul play when actually it is was an accident. Police believed that trying to avoid a deer at night on a curved road, she jerked the wheel & car flew over the curb & submerged under one of those pond's which actually was 25feet deep. She was missing a couple days until they noticed skid marks. I often wondered if having a readily accessible window breaker & seat belt knife mounted near the dash board might have been able save herself.

Sofirn IF23 can be used as a 5000mah powerbank. Wonder why they got rid of it in the new IF24 and Pro versions? Thought a power bank combined with a flash light was the new way...guess not

How would you compare the James Brand screwdriver to the bit bar from Big Idea Design? Is there much difference aside from price and the amount of bits they hold?
The James driver doesn’t stack up against the Gen 1 Big Idea Design driver in the price range and the Gen 2 make it look poorly designed, the only reason not to angle the bit like the Gen 2 is because they didn’t do their market research. I have the Gen 1 BID driver and with plenty of use under my belt angling the driver is an absolute must. £140 for a fidget ring! Are you serious!?
