  • As a full-time Nomad without a permanent home, you can choose any state you want to be your state of residence, but how do you choose which state is best for you? We'll tell you how to evaluate the options and then how to make that state your domicile. South Dakota. Texas and Florida are at the top of most peoples list but there are other good choices.

I could listen to Bob talk for an hour about which type of screwdriver is his favorite. It would be well thought out and he'd weigh the pros and cons of each.

Watching 5 years later and I agree with your Nevada decision! Love the west and proximity to so many amazing places! It’s great not having any state or local income tax to file! I also appreciate not having to have a yearly inspection (aside from smog) on my vehicle! In this area, Reno/Tahoe, it’s a short drive for a change is scenery! I can have my feet in the Pacific Ocean in 4-5 hours!

You're not ugly Bob. 👍🏼You shouldn't have made that comment. 😐I mean the scenery is pure magic but a lot of folks out here think you have a wonderfully friendly and familiar face to go along with your thoughtful and intelligent and incredibly informative videos. Your videos in fact , are so helpful for folks whose 401k's did a nose dive , are pensionless, are divorced (-$$$$) or just realize that costs vs earnings are a joke and want and need an alternative way to live. I would venture to say folks on the road full time may have had their lives saved .........by you. No more keeping up with people you don't even like, no more bills, oh my gosh. I've got to say, full timing as you describe it, seems like the only way to live! In fact, far from a last resort (no pun intended) I think you could say without reservation (no pun) FTRVING is for anyone, with or without money and wealth, who wants to a live a life that is true and "deliberate" (Henry David Thoreau- "live deliberately"........[or discover at the end of life that you haven't lived at all]. I'd love to watch another video on full time rv philosophy - I'd love to hear all the inspiring stories out there from folks who took this plunge and said, "up yours, keep the f'ing house, I don't give a $@&!; and I'm out of here." Consumerism really is an endless road to nowhere and steals your attention away from the things in life that are truly meaningful. God Bless you and all the nomads out there.

Bob, I don't know if I told you this, but as a Canadian I set out on trip in 1999 to travel through the US. I was living in Alberta, Canada then (I'm Canadian) and I travelled 10,000 miles through the USA over about 6 weeks. I was in my own travelling in a car, but I spent my nighrs in motels. I was in my mid 40's then. I loved the journey and I wish I could revisit some of the places I had seen. I'm beggining to realize I'm more of a tourist than a vandweller. I love learning new things and seeing new places. I KNOW I could NEVER be happy parked in a desert or in any one place for extended periods.i've been watching your videos for about 6 years now and I'm very grateful for them. You have given me options; tou've opened my mind to opportunities I've never thoight of before. Thank you Bob.

We currently live in Wisconsin. Getting a Real Driver's license was super easy for my husband and super hard for me because I am female and my last name has changed twice. I literally had to get my divorce papers from 30 years ago! Along with my birth certificate, my marriage certificate for my current marriage, plus my license from my last residence. It took me months! My husband, however, got his the same day we applied and only had to have his birth certificate! Just a little FYI for the ladies out there. I'm not sure if anything has changed. That was in November 2015 when we got the Real Driver's License.

One of the things to take into account, speaking of the safety net in California, is that I believe last July the law changed, whereby if you have to go into a long care facility, you can now keep $160,000 of your assets and still be covered under either Medicaid or Medi-cal (I forget just what it is called.) Some states only allow you to keep something like $2,000.

Wyoming (where I used to live) no state income tax, and for voting, you can sign up the day of a presidential election and vote that day. It has to do with INTENT. All you have to do is state that you are there and your intent is to return and make your home there, then you can register and vote. You may change your mind the next day, lol, but that was your intent, yesterday. Also the UW Healthcare in Casper is based on income, and Dental is available also based on income.

To me, this video with so many of the topics you discuss are GREAT and so much more informative and potentially life changing for the better if addressed prior to there becoming a serious issue, than so many other videos out there.
It's nice to see an experienced person like yourself pointing out some of the landmines and potential pitfalls that newbies and others would be wise to be mindful of as they embark on their journeys.
Your repeatedly reminding people that you're not so much providing the answers as you are providing some suggestions of what to consider getting answers to. Answers we'd all be wise to look for that are best suited to us individually.
Of course, not knowing about so many of the underlying issues out there that we might wish to be privy to makes it difficult to know what questions to ask and you did a GREAT job of pointing some of them that for me had me thinking what other nuanced subjects could be discussed in similar fashion. Hoping to see and hear more. Thanks again for sharing your time and wisdom!

If you travel around a lot, South Dakota would make a lot of sense. It's within 2,000 miles of 48 states, plus big chunks of Canada and Mexico. So if you need to see your doctor, you should be able to drive there in three days or less. If you just need an annual checkup schedule it for the summertime. If it's an emergency, just get to an airport and fly there.

Once you become a Texan, or just plain lucky enough to have been born and raised in that glorious country, you'd understand how deeply held the love and respect for this great state endures. The various terrains and wide openiness of the land, the people, our history and traditions are all integral parts of our identity. You must first live, travel, and get to know the real people of our state in order to understand.

Texas IS a nice place..however, the residents there are have subjectivity. Where most mature, intelligent human beings can say: "I love my state, and Im proud to be there..and I know others feel the same". Texans comprehend approximately half of that. They think that if they love their state, then no one else can love theirs. Its like the old motto; the only things wrong with Texas are the people.

I'm fortunate to already live in the perfect state that fits the vast majority of your criteria. Wyoming the best politically in the country very very pro-gun. Awesome hunting and fishing. No state income tax. Very low sales taxes throughout the state my city is 4% for City County and State. It's beautiful here. In fact I saw something a couple of days ago that said Wyoming was the number one state for retirement.
You mentioned a 4-mile walk to Walmart, well here in my Paradise, it's just a short walk to Walmart too. Okay, it's more of a hike, well really more of a journey, okay so it's an expedition a hundred miles.lol

On the list of no tax states, you forgot Tennessee. Not only does TN not have an income tax, we passed an amendment to the Tennessee Constitution that prohibits the legislature from passing one. They no longer have the authority. I think East Tennessee is a great place to pick up a cheap piece of land and have access to lots of nature and recreation.
You're right... there are other factors besides income tax, though that's a big consideration.

Bald Eagle Without researching all the other issues I’ve been kicking around the thought of retiring to eastern TN. Far enough north to be cooler in the summer, far enough south to be warmer in the winter, far enough west to be away from hurricanes, far enough East to be away from tornados, not too far from NC where my brother plans to retire.
I’ve been planning to sell my house in IN and hit the road full time, but with a lot of campgrounds shutting down and not letting folks in due to the COVID thing it seems prudent to own a bit of land for a home base you can’t be kicked out of. So now I’m thinking maybe buy a lot in an RV park and rent it out while I travel and don’t need it.
So did Bob ever say why some folks are thinking of TN for domicile?

TN is a very solid retirement destination. I've been here for decades but the real estate environment has changed drastically in the last ten years. People are pouring in from all directions and I don't think it's going to stop anytime soon. Values are going way up. If you want pick up land at a reasonable price, I'd do it sooner rather than later. I just took my own advice, btw.

East Tennessee is a beautiful area - I lived there for 7 years. However, they do have state taxes on income. There is no income tax on earned income but Tennessee does have a 5% capital gains tax on investment income. That means it isn't the best place for retirees living off their savings to claim residency.
