Wow, I've never seen the procedure before. I've undergone this operation 6 times throughout my childhood. I had a cholesteatoma in my right ear which can cause brain damage and in the worst cases death. Every time they removed it, it grew back. The end result was the ultimate widening of my ear canal. These operations have resulted in a 73% hearing loss. Unless I really concentrate I'm basically deaf in my right ear. God bless the surgeons who saved my life from this horrible disease.

Had this done in 1967 I was 17. I had ear infection in my right ear which was always draining "we said back then your ear is running" I had this problem as a child in the 50's my parents could not afford for me to have surgery so it wasn't until my Dad had a better job with insurance that I was able to have the surgery. I would not let them put me to sleep because when I was younger in the 50's they used ether to put me asleep for my tonsillectomy, so the surgeon just numbed the whole right side of my head. I could hear the drilling the Dr. talked to me during the whole surgery. I did not feel any pain during the surgery. They told me at the time they did not use ether anymore and I could just get a shot and go to sleep. Even though I did not feel any pain during the surgery I would recommend just going to sleep. I will be 70 soon, never had anymore ear infections after the surgery but did loose the hearing in my right ear because it had gone untreated for too long, anyone having this done good luck, it's not as bad as it looks, I was back to my old self in a few weeks, and no more ear infections or drainage for over 50 years now👍👍 The hearing loss I guess did not seem unusual since I always had cotton in my ear so I could not hear out of that ear anyhow.

I had this surgery today. The recovery was somewhat painful, perhaps a 3 or 4 on the 1 to 10 pain scale. Prescription strength ibuprofen reduced the pain to about 1 or 2. Oddly, the most painful (5) was opening my mouth wide enough to take a big bite of a hamburger. Chewing was ok, but opening my mouth hurt! In summary, the video is very accurate but the actual process is NOT that scary. Get it done, you will be fine. 😊

Well done, very informative. I had this op 7 months ago. The middle ear was removed and a new ear drum constructed. Didn't have any pain (drugs). Had to sleep on my right ear because of the cup that was taped to my left ear. That was the only discomfort. The op took 5 hours, might as well have been 5 seconds in my time span. I stayed home for about 3 weeks until the bandages were removed, I was too embarrassed to go out in public. The only thing I have felt is a tingling in my scalp above that ear. I had a "mini-stroke" prior to the op and the condition was discovered with an MRI. I had a drooped smile on my left side that has returned to normal. Eating was a chore because food would migrate to the left side of my mouth between my gum and my cheek. Don't wait to have this op done otherwise the pain will become unbearable and the end result is premature death. The Cholesteatoma eats the inner and middle ear and then begins to eat through the skull.

I had this kind of operation on my left ear in 2008. My left ear was already deaf when I had the operation. I think the deafness was caused by the infection which must have spread to my inner ear. My consultant told me the disease was extensive whatever that means exactly. I don't know how drastic the operation I had was but I think I was told afterwards that there was some reconstruction. Ten years later it feels OK but is still deaf.
Now I need a similar operation on my right ear. The disease hasn't progressed as much this time. I can still hear well with this ear. I was told that the operation is not urgent. I just hope the problem's been spotted soon enough so that my hearing can be preserved.

please tell me the symptoms you had. my mother has the same problem

    • @cheryltindwani9998
      @cheryltindwani9998 7 лет назад +1

      Vertigo
      Titnitis
      Hearing loss
Foul smelling discharge (yellow or white)
Eroding of the middle ear bones
      Fullness feeling in ear
      Fluid buildup/drainage
      Infections
      Cracking or popping sensations
      Eustation tube dysfunction
      Hole in ear drum
      General feeling of unwell
      Mild fever
      ..just to name a few
Your mother may have all, some or none of these symptoms. It's best to see an ent and get a CT Scan of the middle ear. Generally it's not life threatening if you catch it on time death is rare but is not ruled out. Death or complications occur once the advanced cholesteatoma has eroded the bones, the mastoid pockets, and finally into the brain causing bacterial meningitis. Only one way out of this cholesteatoma is surgical removal procedure. It behaves like a tumor but is non cancerous yet extremely destructive destroying anything in its path. I wish your mother all the best and a quick recovery when she gets this procedure done. Give us an update in the future. I've had this operation done twice in the left ear.

I had this surgery 9 years ago which destroyed all the middle eye bones after which I was fitted with a prosthesis. I am now basically deaf in my right ear.
I then had this surgery for the second time last week Thursday.I'm healing quite nicely, except still a little starry-eyed. Unfortunately, the Cholesteatoma left a hole in my balance organ this time which they reconstructed with bone dust and cartilage. They also put back my prosthesis which was dislodged over the years.
I am hoping I am hoping this is gone for good this time and that the prosthesis will return some of my hearing again!

Greetings from Greece and thank you very much for this informative video.
One question: At the end of the video you mention eardrum and bone may be removed, is it to avoid future inflammations? Is the patient going to lose hearing permanently?
I have chronic otitis and always suffering from eardrum fluttering, and probably ear drum perforation but lately symptoms have skyrocketed and i started thinking of going into surgery so i am having some questions. I know i should ask my local doctor about them but it would be extremely helpful to listen to other doctors' opinions as well.

If you have a mastoid cavity, you can have it obliterated (filled) as to prevent debris from collecting within the cavity. Bear in mind each operation carries risks. I had this done recently and my facial nerve was accidentally severed during the process leaving me with problems I did not have before. Always weigh up the pros and cons.

They don't go into the cranium unless the cholestiatoma has been ignored for some time. Catch it early enough and the worse case scenario is they remove all of the inner and middle ear. Deafness is better than death.

Had this surgery 3 times on my right ear but a total of 5 surgeries including reconstructive surgery which actually took more of my hearing instead of fixing it like they intended. I'm completely deaf in my right ear now. Does anyone else who has also had this surgery have any leakage? It smells and makes me disoriented - I'm afraid it's come back again...I haven't had a proper check up since my last surgery at 15 so about a decade ago.
