    Thanks very much for posting this annotated version of your "pear on a brick". I'm just getting started with pastels, so I've been grateful for your tutorials. This pear is a beautiful still life. The video and notes provide a clear explanation of what you did, as you worked. The occasional out-of-focus moments aren't distracting. The one thing I wished for, occasionally, was to know what color you were using - which brown - when was actual black used (if it was used at all) - did you sneak a little indigo blue into the shadow on the left hand edge of the pear - and so forth. I'm going to see how close I can get (not very close, of course) tomorrow.

    Superior paper >>>> superior materials

      Hi and thanks! In this case, I used a still life setup for reference. And yes, it does become intuitive with practice.

  • @CharcoalPencilPusher
    @CharcoalPencilPusher 8 лет назад

    Ria, thank you. I assume you have them scanned as quickly as you can so as to avoid any loss of color due to storing them. Yes? And I also assume you transport them to the scanner keeping them face up until the moment you have them scanned(?)
    Do you find that art loving buyers of pastel paintings are just as happy to own a print as they are to own an original?
    I am a beginner with pastels and I apologize for knowing nothing about them except how beautiful they are. I'm going to let you teach me :-)

    • @riahills
      @riahills  8 лет назад

      Donald, pastels are quite resilient and the colors, unless placed in direct sunlight for a long period, do not fade.
      Transporting them to the scanner is not a problem. Even upside down the particles stay on the paper because of the papers tooth. The only thing which needs to avoided is smudging them.
      I don't sell prints but if the quality of the print is good I'm sure people would be happy with them.

  • @CharcoalPencilPusher
    @CharcoalPencilPusher 8 лет назад +1

    Please tell me what the scanning process entails. I get pencil drawings scanned occasionally and the scanning machine requires that the drawing lie facedown. I would think that a pastel painting such as this one would loose quite a bit of its color by turning it upside down to be scanned. Am I wrong? Is this a problem? Thanks, Don
    PS I love your work!!!

    • @riahills
      @riahills  8 лет назад +3

      Hi Donald,
      Surprising as it may seem I scan with the pastels directly on the glass - face down. I am careful that no shifting takes place to avoid smudging. Nothing is lost. I do use paper with a fair amount of tooth which prevents the particles from falling off.
      I actually tap the back of my work while it is taped to foamcore board to loosen any stray particles when I am finished.
      Thank you!!

  • @SheasBathLab
    @SheasBathLab 5 лет назад

    I love this. But if I had to critique it I'd have to say the highlight on the lower left in my opinion should not be white but maybe a bright cool grey or green even. The brick doesn't look like a brick. Looks more like a sponge. Bricks are not concave at the edges, just doesn't look right. Otherwise I love this painting. Again, just my personal perspective.

    What do you use to seal the pastel so that it doesnt rub off? Btw, nice work!

    • @riahills
      @riahills  8 лет назад

      I don't seal them but they do need to framed under glass. Sealing them causes a chemical change. Many pastel artists don't use a fixative . . it's not necessary for preservation.
