- Every televised appearance Queen Elizabeth II makes is a carefully orchestrated operation, meticulously prepped for and rehearsed in advance. But while the queen herself only appears during the main shindig, a lot of planning needs to be conducted around her presence. Enter Ella Slack: professional stand-in queen. For the past 30 years, Slack has been waving, sitting and standing in lieu of her majesty, allowing cameras and event managers to adequately prep for the live event. But what qualifies someone to be a royal stand-in? The answer, quite simply, is a regal stature similar to that of her majesty.

Mickey DeVoe the royal family brings a lot of tourism to England and the U.K in general. So, although having a royal family does cost the average taxpayer some money, it ultimately benefits the economy of the country and small business owners.
It's not even just about tourism, it's about the symbol and the history. She's the fact of the UK (less so the Commonwealth realms but I won't exclude those). Everything she does, every way she acts, is rooted in traditional. I would much rather have a symbol, a face of my country be something so proper with literal centuries of tradition and history than have someone like Trump be the face.

You have to realise this is quite complicated. She's there so they see that, amongst others, the technical details are right (like where to park a thing so the queen can comfortable walk from spot a to spot b, see if a mantle doesn't fall off etc), to see if the queen could physically do things, to see if she could make it, to give others that have a specific thing to do with the queen (like holding a robe or curtsying) an opportunity to try if they get it right. It might seem a bit excessive, but these things are important.
Good thing is, she didn't need to be put in a coffin to "Rehearse Queen Funeral"

At first I thought she was a literal doppelganger for the Queen whenever she didn't feel like doing something, but then I realized she's sort of like a test prop that allows everyone else to choreograph the settings so when the actual Queen does the same thing, they've already fixed whatever potential issue might occur.
If she were a literal double, I would had said "Really England? Does she do these events and everyone there, who is totally aware that's not the real Queen, just goes along with it?" Now I realize it's akin to that dude dressing up like Smeagol for LOTR before they put graphics over him.

Very cool! I love these little tidbits. When any royalty would visit our school back home it would also be rehearsed usually about a week or so before their arrival. I though this was just a thing we did in Thailand but apparently it is also done else where!

It does seem a bit silly that she can't sit on the throne during rehersals, but at the same time it's a centuries old national treasure worth millions of pounds sterling - I sure as hell wouldn't want to sit on it! What if something happened (and knowing my luck, it would)
No no, it's the symbolism more than the financial worth. Think about it. If it really were centuries old then it must have been repaired numerous times so fixing it due to an accident would not be a problem. It's just the tradition. Strict tradition to not have anybody but the royal head sit on it.
Not that it's exactly the same but symbolic wise, a serious biker never ever let's another sit on or ride his or her bike either. Not because they're afraid the other person will damage it but because it's just not proper in the biker's eyes.

She’s the rehearsal Queen. She checks to make sure the Sun won’t be in the Queen’s eyes, that everybody can see her, etc, before the event starts
It sounds like, a few days before the Queen goes through any ceremony or procession (probably a day with conditions estimated to be similar to the day of the real thing), they call for Mrs. Slack. She dresses similarly to the Queen, and then she's walked through the process, going through the motions just as the Queen would (minus actually sitting on the throne, of course). While she does that, she makes notes and complaints to the organizers ("The sun is in my eyes", "It's a bit too close", "Could a crowd over there _see_ me properly?", "This tile is a little loose.", etc.).
Because they're so close in height and build and dress, if _Mrs. Slack_ is inconvenienced, obstructed, or obscured by X, Y, and Z, the _Queen_ probably would be too, so they take Mrs. Slack's questions, comments, and complaints into account and make adjustments to the decorations and lighting and such to minimize or eliminate each concern so Her Majesty won't have to deal with them on the day of the real thing.
