Music:
After WWII, we had thousands of Italian and Greek migrants who set up cafes and restaurants as businesses. Over time, they trained us as baristas and we learned everything about coffee. Some of us even have espresso machines at home, but mostly we go to a cafe with a friend and at home we make tea. We can buy tea at cafes and restaurants but it’s easy to make at home.
The coffee cafe culture is replacing the pub culture for meeting up. Pubs are nearly empty. Australia is growing up away from the drunks we once were known as.
Thanks for sharing this authentic Aussie knowledge, Jeni! It’s amazing to learn how deeply coffee culture has roots in post-WWII migration-especially with the Italian and Greek communities. I love how they’ve influenced Australia’s café scene. We’re fans of a good espresso, and definitely tea (coming from England). We’ve definitely noticed that tea is more of a home affair for many. The blend of cultural history and daily rituals here is truly special. Looking forward to experiencing more of it firsthand!

I'm a 60 year old Aussie woman, I've lived in a lot of different places in QLD, NSW & now VIC. There is nowhere I've lived in the last 40 or 50 years where you could leave your home or car unlocked. Maybe still in very small country towns, but generally no, you're asking for trouble.
I have lived in places where we locked our cars but I've lived in more places where I didn't have to lock the car or the house. We leave the house unlocked to go for short walks where we are now and only lock our car overnight

A guy can walk in the city at night, but I would never recommend that for a woman, they are much more vulnerable against a male attacker.
I was an auditor with State Transit & worked a few nights in Sydney. Not a good place to be after midnight if you are a female. Even myself, I worked alone & still needed to keep myself safe as there were many fools having their first beer but the number of women getting home alone was incredible. This was 25 years ago so well before Uber & the like so I suggested these women grab a cab home but got the usual "I have no money". I did use to work alot of overtime in years before but caught the train partly home at 9pm then cabbed it to my home.

As a family still adjusting to life in Australia, our perspective on safety is shaped by our experiences from where we’ve lived before. For us, it’s more about the comfort and security we feel in a new environment compared to what we're used to. We appreciate the insight and will always keep safety at the forefront, no matter where we are.
