Some people clip their horses during the winter so that they don’t get sweaty and uncomfortable when riding. When they get sweaty in the winter after a ride, if they do not get a cooler on them right after you dismount they can colic from the quick drop in temperature
A lesson horse that I often ride got his winter coat really quickly, before it was even cool out yet so he had to be clipped. I live in the southern USA, it takes longer for the temperature to cool here, and horses' coats grow by the amount of daylight rather than by the temperature.
I don't live in the UK but I heard on he news that a severe snowstorm hit the UK. Then they said that it was a false alarm and only a horse named Casper's hair
yeah, i was watching a photography video and this got recommended to me for some reason. i have absolutely no interest in horses and have never watched a video on them so its weird this was recommended to me. cant say im disappointed tho lol
I love how calm Casper is ❤️, I've seen clipping live only one time and the horse was really grumpy. For revenge he ate half of my friends hair because she cut his mane 😂
I don't know why, but you're so motivating. I just found you yesterday, but everytime I watch your videos I get so inspired to be organized and do my homework. I don't know why. I don't even like horses. It's just so relaxing to watch you.
I've seen a couple of your videos now, and I am so happy to watch someone that seems very gentle and considerate towards their equines. Keep up the great work! 👍
By leaving some hair on in an area not prone to sweating, the horse gets extra warmth but without excessive sweating when working. Basically, because it's cold but Casper is ridden often you only want to cut off the hair where he is prone to sweating a lot :)
OMG CASPER IS SECRETLY A POLAR BEAR!!! 1. His fur was like a polar bear before it was cut. 2. When Esme cut his fur it flew away and it looked like snow!!! It looked like snow on the ground as well!
You're adorable. Great job. Fun to watch. Can't wait to get back to the ranch tomorrow. Took 4 days of introducing the clippers. No more rearing haha. Thanks so much for this video. Chill and happy ending. :-)
People moan about clipping and rugging, but in the Uk it usually rains 24/7, so turning them out means hours of waiting for them to dry with full coats, some ponies don’t dry in daylight hours, so clipping or rugging is only real way too give them daily exercise and field time. I know my girl has had worse problems with rain scald in natural, very greasy coat when she’s been out of work, so a full clip and light rug means no over heating, no rain scald and I was also able too towel dry her if it rained during hack, while fluffy she needed towels, fleece rugs to get dry before darkness. This also means greys can be spot bathed too keep away stable stains, without them being left with soggy thick coats for hours! We’ve also had full coated girls get clumps of mud and poo melted into belly fluff if stabled regularly through winter, so clipping stopped that horrid mess! As for the clipper lines, you need a really good set of clippers, sharp, constantly oiled blades etc too get a clean clip! Being a perfectionist I was only happy if it was perfect, so expensive clippers were a must for me (Thankfully the old set my gran bought were stupidly good!) I now have a poodle and had too put birthday and Christmas presents aside that year too get the best clippers available and I can get a beautiful smooth finish.....just a shame I don’t want to risk them on my highland pony! Thick coat is fine, but those oils aren’t getting near my clippers lol!
Hi Esme, We have 6 horses we used a solo comb which looks exactly same as pulling without the pain! The solo comb worked on all of ours from Cobs to our Fine thoroughbred and Irish Sports horse. High recommend it!!! Xx
Miriam Miller yes they have sensory nerves at the end of their hair and are bound to feel some discomfort when having their mane pulled. However it is a personal choice of how you keep your horses mane. we have always solocombed and will continue to do so because it works for our horses it’s pain free and looks good too. , Esme chooses not to pull Casper’s mane because she’s worried it will hurt him and that is fine.
Oh my! The was SOO satisfying to watch! I know I'm very late but I hope I get a like or a pin or a heart by you Esme. You are my inspiration, you are my life and I can't imagine life without watching your videos. For some reason, you make my day all the time and my RUclips life wouldn't be good if I didn't have my inspiration...YOU! I love you and your horses so much! It might be different with horses, but from what I know about dogs, you’re supposed to go with the grain, not against it, that is so not as much hair is taken away and also so it gives it a neater look. I hope this makes sense? Great job anyway as he looks brilliant! I hope I helped!
When I was an instructor at a horse riding & care centre I was told that because horses pile is very thick, that the razors would simply glide over the hair, only shearing a tiny amount and that it would take ages to shave. We were however working with a variety of heavily piled horses and it is probably very different from dog grooming. Every animals fur/hair is different and requires different, although similar care.
So glad you don't pull manes! I absolutely hate it it's awful when you think about it 🙈 If you hold the bit you want to 'pull' use a comb to back brush the rest and then cut the bit you are holding off it looks like it has been pulled x
You are so amazing and such an inspiration to me. Me and my friends are ALWAYS talking about you! You have made me a better rider and help me with my confidence! You are so pretty! I ❤️ Casper mickey willow Toby Bruno and the Guinea pigs! There was a goat at my stables called Hugo who sadly passed away last night and I’m really upset 😢 but your video helped me! I know so much more about horses now 🐴! Thank you so much! Love you 😍 😘!!!!!!
It's the style of the clip. Blanket clips are made to allow the horse warmth in areas that don't sweat much (the areas unshaved) while still providing some comfort for the areas that are more likely to sweat (the shaved areas). The areas that sweat most are clipped so that when the horse exercises, the sweat doesn't cool down and stay trapped in its coat, preventing them from becoming warm when they finish working. She said all of this in the video.
Just a recommendation for how to get a smoother cut without so many lines: always try to go with the flow of how the hair grows, and do shorter, more frequent passes with the clipper. For example I noticed you did a very long pass straight up his shoulder and that's bound to leave a lot of lines. Keep an eye out for the direction the hair is growing and follow that (in reverse of course since you're doing a reverse clip). Another tip is to make strategic use of a brush: backbrush the hair out before a pass and you'll get a smoother cut. You did a great job for your first time though, very satisfying to watch 😃
Why is this so satisfying to watch?
Exactly!

We probably all agree

I didn’t realize horses needed clipped on their body. This is so fascinating!
Kitty Kat they don’t need it but if you show, and or there winter coat won’t come off you can do that.

No they don’t. It’s actually pretty bad for horses because it ruins their body temp regulation.

Hey I’m a dog groomer and shaving in reverse is okay but it’s two length shorter then the blade and looks bad on certain coats.

Why is there still hair like on where the saddle goes on? Just wondering.
Jade Alizibeth i’m not a horse expert but I think the blanket clip reduces friction of the saddle on the horses back, more comfortable for the horse
It’s also so that when he’s not working he still has a bit of a coat so he’s not as cold
Casper is such a beautiful horse 💕
