- I only have about 50 pulls saved up for Xiao and I have a 50-50 so crying right now T_T but hopefully making an MMD with him will give me luck. I hope everyone who wants Xiao pulls him too!

0:15 I like that the beginning has this "audio recorder feel" because it gives the vibe of a person telling a story and it's a story they've been telling and living with for a long time. We get the sense that this is a performance. The applause, the hand gestures, the little smile. However there is a hint it might not be a real stage. The chains, the green hue, the desaturation of the warm colours recontextualise this as a performance in, of and for the self. This is a character trapped in his story, reliving it because it is all he can do.
0:30 The story begins properly. The different colour scheme now implies that the previous aesthetic was meant to be a sort of prologue. A calm introduction, setting the mood as dark, whereas this scene now implies a far more energetic aura. We have dark reds replacing the foresty greens, implying not fire, but rather blood and maybe war. The motion once again carries smiles, the movements grander and more powerful. The "stage" is more brightly lit, suggesting we are being shown something very visual, which in theatre would often be a fight or dance. The shots are mostly kept a little further away from the character, emphasising that he is alone, but also allowing us to view his choreography in its entirety.
0:40 A subtle shift towards more close-ups, more facial expressions. The scene turns from a depiction of war to a depiction of what the fighting has done to the character, culminating in...
0:53 The shift towards darkness. While the stage mirrors the prologue the calm is gone, replaced with a more frantic energy. Expressions and movements become less functional and more expressive, showing a character who is maybe unhinged, maybe relieved, but doubtlessly no longer the person they were before or during the red scenes. Many motions emphasise interactions with other people, yet we see no-one, we are only told about them indirectly, which is partially a constraint of the structure of the medium (akin to a one-person-play inherently not having other actors), yet holds metaphorical significance in that the other people are made to feel distant, not present, possibly in the past.
1:23 The scene shifts again. The colour spectrum emulates the one from the previous scene, yet there are markable differences. Dutch angles and more close-ups quickly having us know that this is no longer a re-telling of incidents, but rather a re-living of the feeling of fighting. And here we get another party: The character's shadow. Their movements are mirrored, yet they do not look at each other. This shows there is a certain amount of dissociation of the character to the shadowy figure. And it is important to note that the shadow also wears a mask. Now from previous incarnations of the character we know this mask is associated with his struggle, however it was notably absent from the war scene earlier, implying that he felt that during it he was still himself, while his fighting persona is now distinct from him, no longer something he wishes to consider his identity.
1:42 We return to the character's internal darkness, now realising that the shadow of fighting follows him even to his mind. We are being told that the constant conflict has created a rift in the character's personhood, where they conceptualise themselves as separate from their shadow persona yet incessantly haunted by it. Brief, more light-hearted motions suggest the character trying to create their own identity, yet the shadow once again mirrors them, tainting the attempt and ultimately dooming it to fail. It is also of note that due to the darker colour scheme the viewer may at first not notice the shadow has stuck around. This is intentional as it replicates the character's initial hope that maybe in their own mind they could be themselves, only to realise that the conflict has followed them.
1:58 This scene is very much a repetition of the 1:23 scene, however in this repetition we are told the gravity of the situation: This is taking place over a longer span of time. The repetition allows the insights from the previous internal scene to sink in, making the shadow figure appear less as a companion and more as a burden and possibly stalker, necessary to achieve victory, yet omnipresent and therefore unavoidable.
2:04 Is the first frame in which we see the shadow taking center stage and it is the moment where we see: No, this is not an enemy, it is the character himself. Damaged clothing, the same dance steps now from the correct angle and eyes dimly glowing through the mask, possibly dirty with blood. We can see it is not a separate entity but rather the character, war-torn, exhausted, traumatised, monstrous. The shadow's particle effects make the light figure appear as though spattered in blood, implying that they were never innocent in the first place, never separate, that instead they are two aspects of the same person, each equally valid and equally incomplete. However this insight is cut short, intentionally making it seem as though the truth had only been allowed to glimpse through for a moment.
2:07 The sound returns to the recorded effect. The character sits down, the darkness returns, the shadow is gone, it is implied that this is where the story ends. Or rather that it does not end, that the plight of the character continues. Then the illusion of the stage play is broken, we see the character in a shot from above and the back, clutching his wrist, indicating that we are seeing behind the curtain, the things that he did not intend to show. The stage appearance is strengthened by the strong light on the character's back, emulating a spotlight as though in theatre. Applause rings, yet is rendered hollow by clear pain in the character's movements, yet not his face. We get the impression that this is a play he put on for himself, to assure himself that he is separate from the shadow figure representing an eternal war. When the truth glimpsed through the story was intentionally quickly ended so as not to face the admission that the suffering entity, the light character, may have to reclaim aspects of both light and shadow to once again become whole.

Indeed in the end we see the light figure replaced by the shadow figure, a hint that a reconciliation may indeed be possible. Whereas before, in fact as early as the first frames, the shadow figure's signature mask had been depicted among the chains to indicate it as am implement of imprisonment in this pain, now the camera deliberately frames the scene so as to not show any of them, instead revealing in its entirety the design on the floor that had only ever been seen in part. In previous incarnations of this character we learn that this symbol is tied to their fate and this suggests that ultimately it is not the masked shadow figure that confines him to this torment, but rather an external force like fate.
Ultimately this work shows a story of self-hatred and dissociation stemming from internalised misfortune, the struggle to remain sane under difficult circumstances and the desire to tell oneself a version of events that makes the pain more bearable. The viewer is never taken out of the story by obvious flaws or metaphors that fall flat, instead one gets the impression that each aspect of the Gesamtkunstwerk was chosen with careful consideration, each complimenting and completing the others. No aspect is superfluous yet likewise no element of the work overpowers the others. It is a strong entry to a long line of quality works that I can only recommend.
