My buddy @joecool4108 hit me up about doing a remix using a sample of "Careless Whispers" by George Michael for "Tongue Kissin"

After we finished that mix I began thinking about how "Tongue Kissin", beat wise, is the precursor/prototype to Jon B & 2Pac's "Are You Still Down".
They are similar, yet different.
Now I do know of a version of "Are You Still Down" where it's using an I guess slightly updated version of the beat that was used for "Tongue Kissin", so I got to wondering "Hmm... how come there isn't a version of Tongue Kissin on the updated beat for Are You Still Down"
My guess is that "Tongue Kissin" as a song was left on the "cutting room floor", but the beat was used to make the demo for "Are You Still Down" and then Johnny J went back and updated the beat for the album version.
So I got to thinking what if there was a version of "Tongue Kissin" where Johnny J began updating the beat somewhere in between "Tongue Kissin" and "Are You Still Down" that kinda shows the developement of the beat that somewhat has elements of both songs making it sort of a hodgepodge of ideas Johnny J tested out before narrowing it down to the finalized version of the beat. 😁
Now before anyone asks "what's up with the vocoder voice (robot voice) and female vocal sounds, "Are You Still Down" has a vocoder in it singing parts of the hook along with Jon B. It really can be heard on the "instrumental version"

As for the female vocal sounds I thought that there are a few 2Pac songs that added female sex sounds in them. so why not include them in this song based on the subject matter:

Yeah it seems a bit juvenile to add that in, but hey even further back in the day Marvin Gaye and many other artist had stuff like that in there songs too to add that extra texture to their songs.

FUN FACT: Recorded on April 15, 1996, it was originally intended for a more introspective/retrospective album that Pac began working on with Johnny J shortly after All Eyez On Me and before working on One Nation and The 7 Day Theory. This album was also set to include songs such as “Mama’s Just A Little Girl”, “Who Do U Believe In”, “Words 2 My First Born” and “Baby Don’t Cry (Keep Ya Head Up II)”.
The instrumental was remixed for Jon B’s “Are You Still Down” for his album Cool Relax. 2Pac was featured on the song.
Tongue Kissin' is the original version. Are U Still Down is the B-side to 2Pac’s Tongue Kissin' both records were produced by Johnny J.
Never knew the recording date.
Heard about the introspective album.
Didn't know 'AYSD" was gonna be a B-Side for "TK", but that would make sense.
I think you've misunderstood something, Are U Still Down is on a B-Reel not a B-side. They weren't recorded even remotely in the same session, 2Pac only met Jon B at the shooting of How Do U Want it in May 1996.
What ever 2Pac was working on at that time was no where near complete enough to already have B-Sides, there weren't even any completed album DATs made yet.
B-reels are used to store more/new stuff made later on when there's not always enough room on the original reel.
The perfect example of this is Trump Tight, the A reel is The Outlawz, Kurupt and Big Syke on a beat produced by Kurupt, the B-Reel is 2Pac, Capital LS, ASU, Greg Nice & Some new instruments (guitar), in this case you need A+B to make 2Pacs song, in Are U Still Downs case it seemed to be the full beat + new lyrics with the old ones left on the original reel.

the answer to your question at least in my opinion is that the beat sounds "better" for tongue kissin, at least to me, than it does over r u still down. i think that beat was wasted on r u still down becuase those lyrics can go with almost any r n b instrumental. tongue kissin was just way more rare, so that beat automatically takes the cake
Well, I actually prefer AYSD more than likely because I heard it first, but by the time I heard "TK" I instantly thought ok "AYSD" is obviously built off of "TK" beat wise. I kinda felt "TK" was more of a demo that probably wouldn't have seen the light of day had 2Pac lived. " just my opinion though. 🤷♂️

Based on these 3 mixes you can kinda see on the OG version of AYSD that Johnny J was starting to add things to the beat and adding beat breaks, but it still was the Tongue Kissing beat.

Well for regular vocals I usually use a compressor, a de-esser, a delay and an eq. To do the robot voice I had to use a vocoder
