The feast of The Annunciation is very important in our story as Christians. Because The Annunciation is the beginning, the beginning of the good news. And what is the good news? We pray it in the Angelus. “The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us”. It is important in our times, because this period of time is urging us to ask, ‘where is God?’.
Why is the beginning important? First, the beginning gives us the root. And in this root, we would be able to see who we really are. What does The Annunciation teach us? That God and men became one. What does it teach? That we, being human, are not just men with body, we are body and soul. We are spirit and body. We can be seen but there is a part of our humanity that could not be seen. I am a body, I am also a soul. The mystery of The Annunciation tells us that God became man, in the womb of the Virgin, not just a fetus that is human, but a fetus that is both Man and God, God and Man. That was the beginning. The beginning also gives us guidance in our way of living, gives us the root of who we are, gives direction in our living. The life of the Virgin Mary was changed because of The Annunciation. It changed because God entered into her heart. It changed because she let God enter into her spirit. In the normal way of life, it is the child who follows the parent. But in the life of the Blessed Virgin, it was the mother who followed her child. The first apostle of Jesus was the Blessed Virgin, because even before Jesus was conceived in her womb, she had already conceived Jesus in her spirit.
First, the beginning gives us the root of who we really are. Second, the beginning gives us the guidance on how to live. But in the end, the beginning also gives us wings. When something had started, it would also end. And everything that has beginning, has also its endings. Except for God, because He is the beginning and ending of all. And what was the end of the story of the Blessed Virgin? Her story started when the angel greeted her, “Hail full of grace, the Lord is with you”. And how did her story ends? By her Assumption into heaven, both body and soul. We started with the Annunciation and it leads us to the Assumption. They are two sides of the same story. But The Assumption is not the end of Mary’s story, but it is a new chapter of her story that started when she was greeted by an angel.
Let us look at these three. First, The Annunciation gives us the beginning, the root about who we are. Second, The Annunciation gives us the beginning, to guide us in our lives. And third, The Annunciation gives us on how we will end. Full of grace assumed into heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of 12 stars. Let’s adapt the lessons of The Annunciation with what is happening right now in our time. First, The Annunciation is the root, the root of who we really are. So, who we are really? We are soul and body. What really is the world? The world is not just for men. God walks with men. Right in the very beginning, we knew the men and God are one. In the weight of our suffering nowadays, we are asking, “God, where are you?” But maybe, the more important question is, “Man, woman, where are you?”. Because God remains the same in His love for us. And if in what we are going through right now, we no longer see where God is, it is not maybe because He already left us, but because it us who left God. We separated our body from our soul. We separated our faith in our lives. We separate God from what we are studying. We separate God from our way of life. The corona virus, like the Annunciation reminds us, that God and men could never be separated. The body and soul could not be separated. What inside us could not be separated from what could be seen by the eye. They are twins, they go together. And if we separate from God, we condemn ourselves to our destruction.
Second, The Annunciation is a lesson on how we should live. How did the Virgin Mary live? She lived being obedient to the will of God. What is our life? Our life is full of blessings. And when we are blessed, we could hear whispers, “You are blessed because I love you. The reason you have food, there are rivers, and clean air, because I love you. The reason you have friends, you have loved ones, is because I love you.” But these whispers from God, we do not take notice. Because we believe that these small blessings are rewards for our hard works. And if we do not hear His whispers and to these small blessings, God would speak to us thru our conscience, reminding us “It is wrong”, telling us “ This is what you should do”, and reminding us “It is a sin, it will destroy you, it could kill you”. But, even though it is our conscience that speaks, we still do not listen. According to C.S.Lewis, pains are God’s megaphones to make us understand that we must listen to Him. If we refuse to listen when we are progressive and blessed and healthy, and we suppressed the voice of our conscience telling us not to kill, not to steal, not to tell a lie, it is already our conscience speaking to us and yet, we do not want to listen, maybe the pain, the sickness, the threat of death will jolt us, will shake us and remember that God is still speaking to us human beings. The corona virus and the Blessed Virgin, both invited us, not to separate from God. And inviting us, do not wait for the pains, sickness and death before we listen to God. If while we are in comfort, in progress, in a beautiful life, we continue to remember the goodness of God, then we would not be needing the pain, we would not be needing the threat of the epidemic, because we would always listen to Him.
Third, the Annunciation leads to the Assumption. Meaning to say, based on how we started, it would tell us on how we would end. What does “today” teach us? Death is real. And death is a gift of God’s mercy. Because we already assumed, that death is the solution to the problems that people made for themselves. No, my dear brothers and sisters, death is a gift of God’s mercy. It is God visiting us at the moment of death and saying to us, “Enough, you have suffered enough in this valley of death, I will take you home, where there is only love, no more pain, no more sickness, no more threats, no more wars, no more violence”. The death is a gift from God, it is a sign of His mercy on our suffering. Let’s not use death as the solution to our problem, the death is not the answer to our criminalities, death must come from God, it should not be done by one person to another person. What does Annunciation teach us? What does corona virus teach us? That pain is real. We had already invented so many anesthesia, so many medicines for us to be numb, but we are not only numb in sickness, in pain. We also become numb, insensitive to each other. And what is the cure when we are already numb with each other? GOD. To love again like Jesus, to serve again like Jesus, to worship the Lord, God our Father, to Jesus. Pain is real and we do not need to remove the pains in our lives. Because the pain, the pain, is a sign that we are still living. And hopefully, the pain that we now experience would become the reason for us to be more caring, more helpful to other people. Because when the pain was gone and we became numb, we will no longer get hurt but we will also never be able to love.
My dear brothers and sisters, the Annunciation tells us who we are, the Annunciation teaches us how to live, in obedience and faith. The Annunciation opens for us the glorious death, the glorious transition from earth to heaven.
Lord, please open our souls, open our hearts and mind. The corona virus is teaching us that we could not separate ourselves from You. It is teaching us that we should listen to our conscience, that we should be thankful for the small blessings that we receive. During the times when we were blind and numb and ran away from problems in this world by means of killing and death, Lord, please take us back to the true way. Lord, in your Incarnation, teach us who we really are, body and soul. In Your Incarnation, teach us how to live like Mary, with humility and obedience. And in Your Incarnation, may we look at death as Your gift of mercy, may we look at pain as our invitation for compassion. Lord, You are with us, stay with us, never allow us to be separated from You. Never again, Lord.
