About a year ago I found a Fray Bentos pie at the local supermarket here in Tasmania. I was so excited having fond memories of eating them in the UK back in the 1950s/60s. Never have I eaten so tasteless and expensive a pie. Bitterly disappointed. I'm definitely going to try your homemade pie idea though I'll most likely make my own filling in my InstantPot.

Fray Bentos used to be a rare treat for us kid's back in the 70's. Now, they've gone the same way as Holland's Steak & Kidney Pies's, Hardly any real meat, just gristle & chemically thickened gravy. Virtually tasteless. Like most British stuff, they USED to be good.

@@cdub5033 Fray Bentos is the capital city of the Río Negro Department, in south-western Uruguay, at the Argentina-Uruguay border, near the Argentine city of Gualeguaychú. I had 2 Fray Bentos pies amongst my emergency food supply. I cooked one yesterday. It was crap. I saved the can and used a can of stewed steak from the same supply, as I was rotating my stock and using those past the best by dates. I bought some frozen puff pastry and my mistake was to use the pie tin as a cutter, instead of cutting round it. The result was a bit of a gravy leak, but it was so much better than the Fray Bentos pie. Thanks for the idea.

My example is always - A whole cheapo chicken, cut into 8 pieces casseroled in a baking pan or slow cooker with a bag of frozen veg and spices/seasonings/pasta sauce/curry sauce, or even a can/packet of soup & serve with rice or mash.
You could make it 10 times without it being the same meal = Italian, Greek, Moroccan, Indian, Asian.
And don't even get me started on what you can do with a cheap mince 🤣

I know I’m late to the party but if you’re still making pies and wondering what to do with your pastry scraps, here’s what I do:
Re-roll out the pastry, spread marmite on it and sprinkle some cheese, then roll it up and cut slices (so you end up with spirals) then cook them for 10 mins or so - great little snacks!
Also works with chocolate spread, jam or pesto if you’re adverse to marmite
Sometimes I cut 2 inch squares instead and put a slice of tomato, some cheese and seasoning diagonally in the middle, then bring each other corner in and seal together in the middle over the filling with a dab of water. Again cook for 10 mins or so and you have filled puff pastry bites 😊
If I really can’t use the scraps I have a bag of scraps in the freezer, then when I have enough I defrost the bag and use that to make pies etc 😊

I bought a Fray bentos from Blighty’s in Ontario here. I was so disappointed, hardly anything inside them, nothing like I remember them.

    Hey
Those little molds would also make fruit pies with a pastry top. I do that. Apple season and have made three this week.great for one person.
Wish I had molds like yours.

At least at the moment despite insane energy price rises they are both (gas/electric) rising with each other. I am so glad that I have a gas cooker to make all my meals with, it's literally 5-10 x cheaper for the energy and so much simpler to cook with than any electric whether air fryer, microwave, or full blown oven and range.
The Fray Bentos and Princes meat pies are a terrible pathetic version of what they once were. I used to buy them as a kind of dog food as my dogs loved to scrape the baked on pastry on the edge of the tin and they could also treat the tin as a temporary dog bowl. Fun times.

I bought a 3.5LCosori. It has a nice dial system and it is spacious as you say. I love it, but I did buy it because you did such a good video on your channel with a big Cosori.

I have just had one of those after seeing this earlier. Cooked in the Air Fryer using your guidelines & like you, I used to love them years ago & they were tasty.................Not now, had 3 minute pieces of meat & all tasteless. Going to make my own now.

Fray Bentos used to be a special treat when staying at grand parents in the 70's , nowadays looks like more meat in a tin of dog food , used to love the pastry , but wouldnt buy one now , should rename them Shy Bentos , the pie with flaky pastry and gravy , and 1 piece of meat if your lucky 👍😉

To be Honest nearly everything you buy now has been reduced in it's ingredients. It got to the stage where prices became ridiculously high so manufacturers started to cut back on the weight and size of products. And cut back on real wholesome fillings

Nostalgia, and a lack of pies overall in Spain, had me grabbing a couple of FB pies recently. Pie 1 looked and tasted how I would imagine wartime rations would have. Pie 2 was binned without opening. Don't understand how you can destroy a product like this, and still be in business.
