Hilariously you kinda get the feeling they tried to at the end of the album version, to which Kendrick avoided their hate by being the realest negus alive
Hip hop is about both though. If it wasn't about the beat, all of these rappers would just go acapella. Rapping is just one half of hip hop. The beats are also critical in to making a good song as it sets the mood and such.
Demetri J You see as weird, or ironic. Because, to me, there's nothing weird, or out of place about it. I'm saying its right or cool by any stretch of the imagination, but I definitely see the attraction. It's not weird at all. However, there's definitely a sense of irony about it.

Actually sending out a positive message to people, damn. He's obviously been through some dark shit and is choosing to keep going and count his blessings, good on you Kendrick.
Growing up in Compton especially in the 90's aint no joke. And for K-dot to have such love and inspiration in his words is a blessing, especially coming out of Compton.

I wasn't a huge fan of this song at first, but after listening to his interviews, it hit me. After I listened to this song a few times I would keep singing "I love myself" even though I wasn't a big fan of it. Kendrick is literally raising peoples' esteem by getting us to repeat the words I love myself in our heads over and over again. If you don't like this, go listen to Lil Wayne. You can have lyrics about how rich Lil Wayne is floating in your head instead.
Yo, I totally agree with this comment. It's catchy. :) Love yoself!! It's nice to have something catchy that's more positive in my head besides Bitch you guessed it lmao
Fake Kendrick fan detected. Look up C4, its an entire mixtape by Kendrick paying homage to Lil Wayne. Not to mention songs they've done together like Mr. Carter 2, Colors, Buy The World and the original All My Life.
Kendrick Lamar!!!!! He's taking one of the best soul group and bringing it back in a whole new way. People might think its weak or gay but I think its straight genius. It's different. And its authentic. Its taking the old generation what our parents grew up on and making it new. Beautiful.
AllDatIAM1 I appreciated all of the samples/influences for this album. The Isley Brothers, James Brown (The Big Payback on King Kunta), etc. This album may not have great appreciation now, but in time with the context of American life at this time, this album has the potential to be brilliant.
The fact that so many people dislike this just shows how many negative people there are out there. A rapper makes an attempt at making a positive, uplifting song about loving yourself in a time where many people hate themselves and commit suicide all the time, and you people want him talking about the ghetto over banging beats.

People that dont like this song honestly are what is wrong with rap. They dont want songs with a message or good lyrics. All you want are shit songs like Migos/Young Thug/Drake*kinda* make with lyrics a 4 year old could make, an 808 and something they can chant like "Yolo" or "Hannah Montana" and i guarentee you are the same people who do not appreciate music from the 90's or 80's. Smh.
alex guerra yeahh they were man, people need to realise that. But slowly i feel the 80's and 90's coming back and yhh Drake does have a few good songs LOL i realised after and put kinda
i dont like this song cuz it aint as good man. Kendrick is better than this. I dont like any of the shit u mentioned that u assumed i would if i didnt like this song. This shit is too candy. it aint the sound we have come to expect from kendrick. I like chill kendrick, i love dark kendrick, i like concious kendrick, i like hard kendrick, I don't necessarily love happy go lucky kendrick.
Mayor McCheese Couldn't have said it better myself. I was expecting a lot more after good kid, m.A.A.d city, instead we get this shit that sounds like something you would hear from Radio 1.
This song aged like fine wine. I dare say the messages are even more relevant now. Some folks used to be skeptical of this song (and album) but TPAB went to be one of the most acclaimed rap albums of all time.

so you hate your self -_- Also define corny and how that definition matches the use of the phrase, 'i love myself'. If you haven't realized it, this track wasn't made for you its for this that wake up not wanting to stay awake, wanting to let go... Those in jails, with no future , with no present, for life...
The song is alright but most people expect him to make music that turns people up and party. This is for a group to get rid of racism. Kendrick has inspiring verses, I honestly am not a huge fan of this song but I still consider him to be killing the current hiphop/rap game

This song is so refreshing for Hip Hop. Not the same Trap shit. Not every song K.Dot makes has to either be a story/lyrical slaughter, let him have fun
If you want to here where it is sampled from, it’s the song called That Lady prt 1 and 2 by the Isley Brothers. I think it’s towards the last half of the song
This is why we cant have nice stuff. You say one sold out because their mainstream.Stop being hipsters and actually listen and examine the song he still gives a meaningful message. He doesn't have to rap about Compton all the time. Its better this way because it shows he is versatile. You ask for meaningful rap and when you get it you insult it.What is wrong with you people?
keep moving forward. no matter what happens. keep your head up. shit will be bad. things will go wrong. don’t ever give up. don’t ever give up on yourself. keep moving forward.
before good kid maad city was out, people were complaining about how swimming pools was so mainstream, how backstreet freestyle didnt sound like kendrick's shit, how poetic justice was corny.. but then, you all called it a masterpiece! you guys saying this song is bs, just wait for the whole fucking picture again.. just saying!
jshmiami yeah dont worry bro, he knows how to make an album and give life to songs that otherwise would be just decent. section 80 played like a book, good kid maad city like a movie. every song matters to construct concept albums like these two and so far, he pulled that off, both are amazing albums that are still bumped today. lets see what hes gonna bring next.
yea, and swimming pools wash't even mainstream. some people don't even know the true meaning of that song because they're too last to follow the story of the album
Paul Camp yea bro people these days are lazy as fuck and they pretend to love a certain artist only by listening to his singles.. thats why they're always saying hip hop is dead when it isnt! swimming pools is actually very dark in the context of the album, even more so with the skit that comes wit it
Interesting coming from Fortnite, never thought I would discover such an amazing gem of a song through it. So in love with this song the first time I heard it
Why are people bitching about this song? This song is ALL about positivity, and accepting yourself the way you are. Why do people never appreciate positivity? Personally I think this song is great, the lyricism is still in there it's just people refuse to understand the meaning behind this song. #onelove
I feel the same when people shit on my Music like i am 17 and have autisim consdiering that my raps fairly good like dont judge it based on the artist but on the lyrical content and stuff idk not comparing myself to kendrick at all i wish i held up to him but ik thats a loong way away but i am sick judging off what they expected not the product its self
Kendrick is inspired Tupac. Back then alot of people changed through Tupac's song.. Tupac also raps about how he survived and grew up in the hood but sometimes he raps about changing people like for example "Changes" or "Keep ya head up" and more. That's what Kendrick doing right now, Changing people.
This is personally one of my favorite songs by him. I think that i and u just encompass mental illness and self-loathing in such a binary, easy to understand concept. Some days, you're like i and you can go out and say that you accept yourself and your failures, but then the darkness comes in and you have days where nothing can stop that voice in your head that's constantly bringing you down, and u shows that in such a realistic manner. It's hard to listen to.
I swear to GOD I cannot listen to more then 10 minutes of Drake before I start feeling feminine myself. Thankfully K-Dot can bless your ears with some real shit
yeah i agree he can make very good songs 0-100 is a good example, but he gets on the emotional side. Like how many albums do you have to make about your ex gf? I didn't like how he reacted to kendrick's control verse either
I knew kendrick would be pigeonholed into the gkmc box. After making such a great album. It's gonna be like how Nas was looked at cause he didn't make something just like illmatic.
+Joshua Bailey HILARIOUS AND ORIGINAL HILARIOUS AND ORIGINAL HILARIOUS AND ORIGINAL HILARIOUS AND ORIGINAL HILARIOUS AND ORIGINAL HILARIOUS AND ORIGINAL HILARIOUS AND ORIGINAL HILARIOUS AND ORIGINAL HILARIOUS AND ORIGINAL HILARIOUS AND ORIGINAL
Damn kendrick, these "fans" so quick to turn on you just because they expected a banger beat . Well fuck em, let them go back to rick ross or meek mill bullshit. Their mind and ears are stuck to only one thing "money and pussy" and not the love your trying to spread. I'm lovin it and I dig the funky ness, always trying something different . Stay fresh niga
Except they don't have more talent, they have the lowest standard of talent, they literally rap about the same thing in almost everyone of their songs, at least kendrick discusses different topics
Ty Rice Genesis's album Abacab (1981) was a huge success and though the songs are a fair bit generic, there are still great bits throughout. The songs reflect dark emotions and are about people who feel lost or who are in conflict, but the production and sound are gleaming and upbeat (even if the titles aren't: "No Reply at All," "Keep it Dark," "Who Dunnit?" "Like It or Not"). Also their previous album, Duke (1980), had themes such as a separated wife who regains custody of the couple's child ("Please Don't Ask") and this was very mainstream music back then. So I don't understand your argument that because there's a message behind lyrics (which there usually is), that piece of music cannot be mainstream. On a side note, the writing of Genesis dwarfs the quality of Lamar's to that of a 10 year old in comparison.
Ty Rice I'm not saying that it is a bad song, it's a feel good song and that's why I think it will likely be a mainstream song. Lyrically, it's not his most complex work for sure. That's essentially what I meant.
This is the most important piece of music in my life. If it wasn't for this track I wouldn't be too sure if I would still be out there feeling alright.
I remember when this was the first single from the album and nobody was really feeling it until it was on the album and then everyone loved it Kendrick is a genius
To be perfectly honest, I love this song. The lyrics are great, the hook is nice, and the beat is unique. Everybody complaining about the beat don't know how to appreciate different kinds of production. But that's ok ya'll can say you want cause at the end of the day HE LOVE HIMSELF!
It's funny. I have listened this song for about a year and finally now i completely understand the message. This track helped me a lot throughout my depression. We better acknowledge the greatness of Kendricks message. I promise I will sing about you my brother!
I don't understand how people can hate this song. it's filled with inspiration. And for the first time ever, it doesn't talk about drugs, sex,or alcohol.
@@tsucube4377he never mentions weed and mentions lean once but not in promotion but rather in criticism. Were YOU listening? Seems you dont really get the message let alone bothered to pay attention to what words he did and didnt say. Next time pull up the lyrics alongside the song if you struggle to follow along instead of incorrecting someone
I love this song. As a people, we need more empowerment & encouraging music with self-love messages instead of walking around try'na justify looking like some other race & culture. Big up to Kendrick. Hope this song isn't drowned out by the negative rap that dominates the airwaves.
this is so old school it hurts i love it simple sampled beat and amazing flow and meaningful lyrics people who disagree with this dont understand where hip hop came from.
Eminem is only hated cuz he's white, because he has one of the best wordplay ever, best lyrics, the issue of him is that he's not as commercial anymore, but his back in the day songs where real good, listen to the Curtain Call: The Hits album (From song 2 please), And Encore album, to me his best albums
So glad he didn't revert to making any heavy-beat lifeless shit that fills the charts these days... hopefully the rest of the album is the same sort of style.
He makes big pictures with albums. You cant judge a song by itself from kdot like backseat freestyle because in his album the song represents him messing around with his friends free-styling in his van
This song brings such good vibes... Kendrick brought justice to this track no doubt. Dear Hip Hop heads, stay open minded. Kendrick has a huge variety of songs which fits different sub genres. Rather that than artists which only creates the same sound multiple times. Again. Stay open minded. If you don't like it, fine. Just don't expect Kendrick to release ''Good Kid, M.A.A.D City'' every time he decides to release an album. Hearing a different feel when we're used to a certain feel from an artist is not always good, but in this case ... well, it was.
Another plus for the rebirth of real music. Shoutout to the Isley brothers sample and message along with superior lyricism. They don't do that anymore. Great original song

People don't always recognize an artists evolution!
For real!
I remember listening to this back in 2015
And he really just dropped album of the decade after that, almost out of pity lmao.
Did... People just didn't understand the message when it first came out. It's too relatable now a days
Hip hop is not about beat. Hip hop is about lyrics and meaning behind rhyme and flow. But people don't realize that these days.
Hip hop is about both though. If it wasn't about the beat, all of these rappers would just go acapella. Rapping is just one half of hip hop. The beats are also critical in to making a good song as it sets the mood and such.
Rapping is 1 fourth of hip hop, not 1 half. It's 1 half of hip hop music though.
But I like the beat
Hip hop is about beat, and lyrics.
"hip hop" now is just a catchy melody and a chorus that repeats the same bar over and over and over and over etc.
Weird how a song about loving yourself has lead to comments from users that do nothing but insult others
Its so funny because its true
And songs about drug use, money, and degrading women gets the most love SMH.....
Demetri J You see as weird, or ironic. Because, to me, there's nothing weird, or out of place about it. I'm saying its right or cool by any stretch of the imagination, but I definitely see the attraction. It's not weird at all. However, there's definitely a sense of irony about it.

Growing up in Compton especially in the 90's aint no joke. And for K-dot to have such love and inspiration in his words is a blessing, especially coming out of Compton.
I done been through a whole lot
Trial, tribulations, but I know God
Satan wanna put me in a bow-tie
Praying that the holy water don't go dry, yeah yeah
As I look around me
So many motherfuckers wanna down me
But ain't no nigga never drown me
In front of a dirty double-mirror they found me
And I love myself

I love myself

I wasn't a huge fan of this song at first, but after listening to his interviews, it hit me. After I listened to this song a few times I would keep singing "I love myself" even though I wasn't a big fan of it. Kendrick is literally raising peoples' esteem by getting us to repeat the words I love myself in our heads over and over again.
If you don't like this, go listen to Lil Wayne. You can have lyrics about how rich Lil Wayne is floating in your head instead.
Exactly. Well said
Yo, I totally agree with this comment. It's catchy. :) Love yoself!! It's nice to have something catchy that's more positive in my head besides Bitch you guessed it lmao
Alan Valadez Good point.
Way to go my man well said
Fake Kendrick fan detected.
Beautiful.
THANK YOU. agreed
100% this is where hip hop needs to go not what they play on the radio.

Maybe they just don’t like how it sounds 😐

the live version in the album is a lot better anyways

People that dont like this song honestly are what is wrong with rap. They dont want songs with a message or good lyrics. All you want are shit songs like Migos/Young Thug/Drake*kinda* make with lyrics a 4 year old could make, an 808 and something they can chant like "Yolo" or "Hannah Montana" and i guarentee you are the same people who do not appreciate music from the 90's or 80's. Smh.
I agree with you the 80's and the 90's were the real deal and this song is dope but drake's got dope stuff beside the sensitive shit
alex guerra yeahh they were man, people need to realise that. But slowly i feel the 80's and 90's coming back and yhh Drake does have a few good songs LOL i realised after and put kinda
No...all we want is real hip hop such as Nas.
i dont like this song cuz it aint as good man.
I was expecting a lot more after good kid, m.A.A.d city, instead we get this shit that sounds like something you would hear from Radio 1.
how can anyone hate on this?? the beat is so sick and super fuckin fresh!

Nolimit Jose that's mean lmaooo
Nolimit Jose That had nothing to do with anything... but I laughed. So take this like. Lol
Nolimit Jose you ain't even have to cook that boy like that.
I know right, I love this song, the haters can go listen to their garbage, repetitive, slow songs, while I listen to this, I love this beat
This song aged like fine wine. I dare say the messages are even more relevant now. Some folks used to be skeptical of this song (and album) but TPAB went to be one of the most acclaimed rap albums of all time.
You guys notice how there's cars honking towards the end of the song? Kendrick once said on a song life is a traffic jam...
Tupac - Life is a traffic jam. .
He also said life is like a box of chocolates make up your mind Kendrick...

Also define corny and how that definition matches the use of the phrase, 'i love myself'.

Every single one of his songs has a message, They aren't suppose to make you turn up and party. No one listens to lyrics anymore.
Turn up to backseat freestyle and look out for detox
Reapersivan777 go read on rapgenius.. you obviously need it! Kdot is lyrics.. not random mumbling to keep a nice beat
I have read his lyrics. I let the story unfold, but sometimes I just ignore it and let the nice beat take over.
me too.. both are important - come for the beats, stay for the lyrics.

Good to know this. I hadn't heard of Kendrick until GKMC was already considered a classic.
jshmiami yeah dont worry bro, he knows how to make an album and give life to songs that otherwise would be just decent. section 80 played like a book, good kid maad city like a movie. every song matters to construct concept albums like these two and so far, he pulled that off, both are amazing albums that are still bumped today. lets see what hes gonna bring next.
yea, and swimming pools wash't even mainstream. some people don't even know the true meaning of that song because they're too last to follow the story of the album

Why do people never appreciate positivity?
Personally I think this song is great, the lyricism is still in there it's just people refuse to understand the meaning behind this song.

Lyrically, it isnt as complex as his older work. "fee, fi, fo, fum. My heart undone" not really the best hes done lol
Ofcourse, but it doesn't change the fact that it's still a dope track.

Aquino Loayza Don't let autism limit you bro, you can still be a dope rapper.
P.S. I make rap music too.
OMG Finally who understands!
This the only jam track I bought. I mean I had to 😂😂
NO GOD
Only one you should🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥‼️💯💯
I swear to GOD I cannot listen to more then 10 minutes of Drake before I start feeling feminine myself. Thankfully K-Dot can bless your ears with some real shit
With Drake you start crying on your way home in your car.. "Hold on we're going home"
Jorge Casillas
im telling you man lol
lmfao bruh
Nathan Thomas
lol I'm not even tryna hate on Drake, im just bein real
yeah i agree he can make very good songs 0-100 is a good example, but he gets on the emotional side. Like how many albums do you have to make about your ex gf? I didn't like how he reacted to kendrick's control verse either
As Kendrick says, "this one's for the kids"
That thundercat solo at that end...I LOVE IT!!
fuck im going to have to say it *inhales* "is this the song from fortnite??!!"
ill go kms now
I knew kendrick would be pigeonholed into the gkmc box. After making such a great album. It's gonna be like how Nas was looked at cause he didn't make something just like illmatic.
But some people think that section 80 or even OD is better than gkmc
Nas made Stillmatic and Gods Son which were very good. talking about 8 years apart
ISATGDuh
outa here with that. someone can make a claim for section.80, but my dude, OD had mediocre production. gkmc is easily a classic.
You probably thought Nastradamus was dope too
Don Mac nobody thinks that and Nas is my fave rapper
This is almost a continuation of Real off the 'good kid m.a.a.d city' album, he says "how can I be real if I don't even love myself?" Dope beat K.
And this message is powerful, I'm sure their are ppl out there, not able to sing this song cause they hate themselves so much.
Who's still loving themselves in 2016?
I love myself every day
I loved myself since 94. No reason to quit now.
213 likes, let's leave it like this, BTW the mumble rap bandwagon doesn't love itself, full of hate
i
In a pandemic's thirst, an oasis have i become.
Whole lot of fake Kendrick fans, they'll be crawling back when his album drop lol
You ain't had had to bring meek mill or rick ross into it im sure they have more talent then you..but I agree with everything else.
Except they don't have more talent, they have the lowest standard of talent, they literally rap about the same thing in almost everyone of their songs, at least kendrick discusses different topics
tru
Hopefully it's one of his "mainstream" mass appeal/radio songs...
***** It's very basic, so mainstream cats can understand it...
You clearly aren't listening to the the words and the message behind it...
***** J Cole & TLC song
This is Hip Hop, it has a message. Kendrick continues to put out GOOD GOT DAMN MUSIC that uplifts the culture......!!!!!
every now and then i come back to this album and become more and more grateful for kendrick with each listen of this masterpiece
Kendrick always goes in. 🤘
It's funny. I have listened this song for about a year and finally now i completely understand the message.
This track helped me a lot throughout my depression. We better acknowledge the greatness of Kendricks message.
I promise I will sing about you my brother!
The Boy ls Banging...
In Case You Have Not Heard Him Yet, l Wanna Co-Sign For Him. The Boy ls Bad...
This was my first Kendrick Lamar song which i heard for the first time in 2016 on loop for 1 hour straight. It's quite nostalgic 😍!
“He said I gotta get up life is more than suicide.” FELT!!!!
1)kendrick lamar
2)schoolboy q
3)meek mill
4)wale
5)j.cole
Nigga said meek mill and wale. Hop off that radio son
Drake be leader of the new school
Big KRIT?
J. Cole should definitely be higher than Meek
Kaleb Bell whats your top five?
I don't understand how people can hate this song. it's filled with inspiration. And for the first time ever, it doesn't talk about drugs, sex,or alcohol.
People are too afraid of speaking about happier things, apparently.
Are you even listening? He talks about weed and lean a lot in this song.
This song is so good all the way through.
June 2021 🙌🏾 One of my absolute fav uplifting songs ❤️❤️☺️
If you don't love this song you don't love yourself.
I love this song. As a people, we need more empowerment & encouraging music with self-love messages instead of walking around try'na justify looking like some other race & culture. Big up to Kendrick. Hope this song isn't drowned out by the negative rap that dominates the airwaves.
Marcus Finnie YEAUH!
Good message and music, idk why people are trippin.
Right!! I love myself being BLACK. I LOVE HOW THE SONG SOUND 70's...remind me of a time of black power. I can picture Jimi Hendrix being on this.
when he screams "I LOVE MYSELF!"...chills
Making it out of junk junction with this🔥🔥
this is so old school it hurts i love it simple sampled beat and amazing flow and meaningful lyrics people who disagree with this dont understand where hip hop came from.
How do people think this is mainstream? It's based off of the Isley brothers. He's taking after Ice Cube's stuff which is awesome.
It's also like OutKast
The Groove of this song is at whole another level. Eminem is a God cau he calls himself this way. Kendrick males divine music.
Yes, divine is actually a pretty accurate word.
+Edgeforce1 4 real I can't stand Eminem
Eminem isn't a god by any means. only kids who pretend to like rap think he's a god.
Eminem is only hated cuz he's white, because he has one of the best wordplay ever, best lyrics, the issue of him is that he's not as commercial anymore, but his back in the day songs where real good, listen to the Curtain Call: The Hits album (From song 2 please), And Encore album, to me his best albums
a great listen during these times.
SeKc I'm mean I hope it's not too mainstream - so, yes, I agree with you
That dj mustard shit lol
nooooo no no no i want shit like the art of peer pressure sing about me and adhd
Franklin Johnson exactly or look out for detox or ignorance is bliss
Love this song. It grows on you after listening to it a lot.
This has to be one of Kendrick Lamar best songs
This song brings such good vibes...
Kendrick brought justice to this track no doubt.
Dear Hip Hop heads, stay open minded.
Kendrick has a huge variety of songs which fits different sub genres.
Rather that than artists which only creates the same sound multiple times.
Again. Stay open minded.
If you don't like it, fine.
Just don't expect Kendrick to release ''Good Kid, M.A.A.D City'' every time he decides to release an album.
Hearing a different feel when we're used to a certain feel from an artist is not always good, but in this case ... well, it was.
If Kanye had dropped this, yall would've buried him by now.
LMAO
Lol it's only the truth
Everyone IS burying Kendrick according to all these comments...
Kanye is dope and does dope shit
* Hangs Up *
Kanye still doing dope shit !!!
Shoutout fortnite for puttin me onto this gem
sammee
FR. Fornite helped me find these bangers I didn't know existed
This a masterpiece and it makes me feel some type of way and I can explain it.
Why do people hate trying new things and trying to get better? Salute to kendrick dope song old school mixed with new school
Another plus for the rebirth of real music. Shoutout to the Isley brothers sample and message along with superior lyricism. They don't do that anymore. Great original song
