  • The ferry was started in 1925. The first ferry boat was the Captain John Smith and crossed the James River the first time on February 26th 1925. The boat was 60 feet long and could carry 16 Model T Fords across the James River. It was privately funded by Captain Albert F jester. After the Captain John Smith was retired in 1950 the deck house was used as a water side Cottage and was placed on pylons in the Elizabeth river near Portsmouth Virginia. In 2003 the deck house was removed and donated to a preservation group in Surrey. The ferry boat Virginia built in 1936 carries only 28 cars and is now still in use as a backup boat and soon will be replaced by the new ferry boat that is currently being built. The ferry boat Pocahontas was built in 1995 and holds 70 cars. The ferry boat Surrey was built in 1979 and holds 50 cars. In 1945 the Commonwealth of Virginia acquired the ferry and the Department of Transportation assumed all operations. Talks of building a bridge across the river have came up many times in the past. But it has been decided that by placing a bridge across the James River in this area would not be a good idea because it would not look good going past Jamestown Island and all of the other historical sites in this significant area of our history.

The James River scares me to death.

      Why

@@-GetGoTv Because of it's sheer size, width and depth at the Ferry location. I don't even want to see the James River Bridge at Newport where the river is 5 miles wide. You fall in there and even the best swimmers don't stand a chance

9:42 Seagulls actually do that all the time. They follow closely in the wake of tugs and ferries since they can kick up marine life. I'm not sure how useful it is for them though.

Apparently crazy people also do feed them. I see no joy in attracting hundreds of seagulls. You might get pooped on.

Ferries run every 30 minutes. You drive your car on and it doesn't cost anything it is free. It takes about 15 minutes to get to the other side and during that time you can get out of your car and walk around or go upstairs to the observation deck. Once you get to the other side you can go about your way or you can turn around and get back on the ferry and ride back another 15 minutes for free

Ya this ferry wakes me up at 5 am by blowing the horn every 2 minutes in the morning it sucks wish they would close it!!! It a free ferry and a big waste of money!!! Also it make it hard to go out in a small boat because the waves from the ferry will crash you !! The land is being washed out from the waves ! So this ferry is a problem!!!

😄! You took the joy out of me wanting ride on the ferry for a few seconds lol. I was wondering if it cause any problems for other small boats and if it was washing the land away.
