FreeCAD - 3 Ways to Extrude

  • One of the things I love about FreeCAD is that there are many ways to solve a problem. In this demonstration I introduce 3 ways to extrude a face.
    There are several name for "Extrude" in FreeCAD. Depending on which workbench you are starting from.
    Part Design - Pad ( working with sketches )
    Draft - Trim or Extend ( will work on any face or line )
    Part - Extrude ( a sketch )
    The different tools take differing approaches to the extrusion and have different parameter available.

    Thank you for the video!
    I am new to freeCAD, and I will come back to this video to learn this again. 😁
    Actually I wanted some educational video with my dinner, so this was helpful.
    I need to find some way to know all the terms and words for this program as I did for blender. 😊

    Hi.
    Is there any way how to extrude multi enclosed sketches into single solid object which will be hollow at the end.
    Let say, one circle inserted in to another one. And I would like to extrude object between them.
    Or it is only possible to extrude bigger object and then substrate smaller one?

    I made a plane and when i tried to extrude it, it did not work because it doesn't belong to the active body. It also did not work with the 2 other methods. Is there any way to extrude a random plane or must it be somehow referenced or have a sketch with it?

    I started with the "sketcher" and when I select "part design", the Pad button is greyed out. What do I do?

    • @TheRainHarvester
      @TheRainHarvester 5 лет назад +6

      Ok, I figured it out. You have to select the Sketch on the left window's "Model" tab. Then go to the FreeCAD's pulldown menu and select "Part Design". Then Zoom out and your 10mm version of the sketch is there. I'm such a noob at this program.

    at 4:30 how can you set the distance of the circles radius from the edge of the face it is on?
    when I select the radius I cant select the edges to set the distance in the sketcher.

      Press x then select the edge to link to an external geometry. I have been looking everywhere for this answer. Coming from SolidWorks this peeved me.

    • @mathcodeprint
      @mathcodeprint  4 года назад +1

      Usually this means your sketch is not a closed loop. Picture a circle with a small piece missing FreeCAD doesn't know what to make solid. It can't be just visually complete it has to be complete using constraints. Look int the combo tab to the left click the link counting the degrees of freedom. The items that are not constrained will turn green. Work on constraining those items. Then you will be able to pad. If that is not the issue look down at the status bar at the very bottom, warnings and problems show up there.

      @@mathcodeprint I very much appreciate the help. I got the sketch to show on the body but it will not allow me to pad it so I can make the shapes cut out

    • @ulaB
      @ulaB 3 года назад +1

      @@mathcodeprint That actually just happened to me too. I had a fully constrained / closed sketch, but it consisted of multiple connected areas. I thought I could use different pad features on all the different areas like I did in F360, but it seems you can't do so in FreeCad.

    Oddly, following your tutorial, my extrusion only extrudes the outside boundaries. Before I did the same actions and then it did result in a solid. I see no indication of what did differently other than the result on the screen. Is this a known problem?

    4:14 when I want to draw a circle right there but it needs to be on a specific place. How do you do that? How can I use the lines from the underlaying body?? I know it was possible in Inventor.. but I want to learn it in Freecad

    • @mathcodeprint

      That is what draft snap is for, or you can enter specific coordinates in the combo tab to the left.

    Ok you did another video on studs and i caught onto that, but man this is becoming a PITA BIG TIME... How to I simply create a hole in the wall I made. Trying to construct an in-wall shelf for a client's entertainment stereo box but 12 hours and all I have is a damn 11ft wall with studs. Missing the simple 2, 13" square holes

    • @mathcodeprint

      I don't recommend using FreeCAD for a commercial need that has a a deadline. That is unless you have been using it for a long time. It is too quirky. To create a hole in the wall, you can most like subtract out a cylinder. You will likely use the boolean tool in the Part workbench. NOT the Part Design Workbench. The first is for working with parts, the other is for creating parts.

    How to modify "extrusion" or "extruder"? For example: how to make a fillet or chamfer? (there is an error if I try: "Selection is not in Active Body ! Select an edge, face or body from an active body".) And it doesn't work if I place it in new body. Same problem with just cube or cilinder.

      robo joe Oh, if you need a simple block in FreeCAD, the quickest way is: (1) Activate Part WB, (2) Click the Cube builder icon, (3) Adjust the L,W,H dimensions.
      Free charge, oc course. And parametric design can be involved.

    Great, now if the extrude button was not greyed out I would know all three places to select it. This video is like a video titled how to make pizza that shows multiple ways of putting pizza in your mouth.

    • @mathcodeprint
      @mathcodeprint  3 года назад +2

      Admittedly this an early video of mine so the quality is likely lower than more up to date vids. Usually if something is "greyed-out" it is a result of not having a proper "selection" or there is another active "Task" running. In the combo bar to the left click your tasks tab and see if something is waiting for input. Also, now I want Pizza.
