Good grief, what a monumental effort with a healing broken toe. I had my school formal at the Beenleigh Rum Distillery back in 1986. Yes, the road you walked on at Pimpama was the old highway to the Coast. Certainly a different perspective to driving.
As an old Brisbane boy and one who spent a lot of time driving to the Gold Coast in the 1960s and 1970s, I recall the old highway with great fondness. I have been enjoying your walks immensely. Thank you.
I normally walk around Dreamworld, under the motorway besides Coomera river. Beautiful area to walk. That big lake at 15:12 is Damien Leedings park. Nice lake to walk around. I consider walking from Coomera to Southport or Surfers Paradise. You're giving me some inspiration :)
Rob, you’ve regurgitated my imagination and my emotions with this narrative video....sitting in cold miserable cloudy winter Melbourne I re~sensed the joy of having driven the route hundreds of times on very early Sunday mornings listening to Macca on radio ABC Australia All Over program so I could to wrestle the surf, ground my body on the soft sand and be on that beautiful strip of beach. And yu took me places under/ over all those bridges, rivers, creeks, footpaths that I flew past & always wondered about! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thank you for this, it lets those like me who take the train each day to work or occasionally drive along the motorway see what it looks like from off the road
I have just recently come across your channel its great. I am an avid urban walker myself but a rank amateur compared to yourself. I just do about 12km a day on average. What you do is incredible. This walk a real epic. Thanks for all your great videos. Cheers mate 👍
@surferrosa1104 thanks! My feet were killing me over the last few k's - it remains the longest single walk I've done. I'm keen to bicycle it one day though. Thanks again for watching my shows. Got a new Gold Coast one coming up within the next few weeks.
Just came across your videos. This one was really interesting to watch because I live in Logan and have driven to the coast hundreds of times over the years, and watched all the various road upgrades etc. it was fun watching you walk and explain the various sights. When I first came to live in Brisbane, we use to stop at the strawberry farm whenever we visited the Gold Coast. I didn’t know it had been turned into housing estates.
@theresa healy and it's amazing how one comes to understand the topography of the landscape as well. Hills, streams, valleys - all must be traversed. In a car it's easy but on foot even small hills after a while can be a challenge.
The old highway to the Gold coast - I was born 1955, and remember as a kid the family trips down to visit my Grandma at PAlm Beach. The Coles Servo where you had the sandwich, opposite that Roundabout is a hidden cemetery - Pride of place at the front is Russ Hinze, the Minister for everything - second row is almost all members of the Oxenford family...
Actually, it's been named Coral Sea. South Pacific Ocean is a little more east. Pacific Ocean is a titch north. As with all the videos on this channel, a great effort.
Very interesting and enjoyable thanks . I lived in Beenleigh years ago and we would stop at the now gone strawberry farm ! They had animals to pet and a cold drink there, a quiet place half way to the Coast ! And on the way home Yatala pies ! We left 15 years ago and it's become very built up , traffic looked very heavy ! A great walk well done ! Best wishes from St Just in Cornwall UK .
I love doing that in my local suburbs and surrounds. Not just the pretty parklands and streets with posh houses. But all the everyday workaday roads and buildings, factories etc...and little hidden hollows., to get a rounded feel for where I live. Never walked as far as you are though!! 😮 What an adventure! Good on you. 👍
@theresa healy thank you very much indeed for your kind feedback. There are things to discover everywhere and all it takes is to put your walking shoes on, head out the door and go looking. Thanks for stopping by!
Just watched this....well done! Local urban adventures...epic stuff. Thanks for posting your journeys. I can't believe I didn't come across your channel earlier ..✌️
@10:00 yes this is the old highway, as kids we remember the soldier and church well... I now live in Ormeau,,,,,, The murals you saw at around 7:00 where the soldiers lost in WW1 from the district.
@Kolan Sam Rain, hail nor snow stops me from walking, not even a broken bone. Thanks indeed for watching. (Though if I break a leg I might take a few days off).
Hope you do a walkabout of New Farm one day as I attended New Farm State School from 1959-63 and though i know its history. I would not mind it being explained on film and I use to live in Kent Street and then over a shop at which is known as Halls Buildings which is named on the building on the corner or Commercial Road which leads down to the wharf - thank you for your walks
What an amazing achievement! Well done 👍 I bet that water felt great on your sore and tired feet!!! 💙💙 You're walks are very inspiring but I don't think I could ever do that.
Rob Amazing, i couldnt event have the balls to walk down those inbetween parts of Yatala and Pimpama or where you had to share the road. and its a great walk too on the way you got Ormeau shopping village, you got the Service centres and off course the yatala Pie Shop so its a good people who do this route walking/Jogging or Cycling wont go hungry maybe if i were to do it as you said i would Bicycle if i was going to do this abit slow in areas of interest to take in the scenery that Church and Cemertary looked spooky probably at night. In fact here i go on my high horse the state government i think they need to invest more in walking paths and bike infrastructure between between shared councils like Logan and Gold Coast perhaps we will have less reliance on the Cars on the M1. for example if i was Gold Coaster wanting to work at Yatala if the bike ride and path was safe well lit due to the great weather the SE gets i would cycle to work no need for the car clogging up the M1. Anyway off high horse and thanx for your tour i hope your recovered well which off course you have.
Very informative but you missed some of Beenleighs history. The history of Yatla Pies ( midway from Brisbane to Southport) and Bullens Lion Park, ( the large industrial blocks just south of Beenleigh.) The hotel was the Oxenford Hotel and not the Oxley Hotel. A walk I would never do or have done.
@Dennis Hannam thanks very much for your feedback. I didn't mention Yatala Pies or the old lion park simply because I didn't walk past them. I was on the east side of the highway going south and missed both of those places completely. (They are on the west side). I have though just shot a video about the Stapylton area and Yatala Pies will be mentioned in that one. Hope you enjoy it 😄
Man that's one hell of a walk!!! Do you remember what you had for dinner that evening and how long did it take you to recover?! Thank you for the video.
The SHRINE was and is a tribute to a car load of friends who were hit and killed in their broken down statesman by a kid who was on his phone back in about 2014/1015 Rip curly
Hi Rob, I am a 1980 immigrant to Brisbane with my two babies. Thank you so much for this and all your shows. I think your shows should be compulsory viewing by ALL BRISBANE primary and Middle schools so that the young people have a very tangible historical connection to where they live and its history. Without knowing your history, you have no anchor in life, and are easy prey for all the propagandists that are waiting to pollute your mind..
Wow Rob, top work and thanks for sharing that great walk with all of us. I reckon you would make a great tour guide. I like the historical aspect of your videos and as a walker myself, I can identify with the effort required including those painful feet at the end of the day LOL. Bet the feet took a while to recover from that effort? Also just looked at your Boundry Street video and that is excellent too. My first job was at the old peters ice cream factory in Boundry Street West End. I think there is some kind of retirement community there now? Anyway, thanks again for the great and really interesting videos mate.
The last several times I have crossed the Coomera River I have thought of this video. (Tip: often best to get off the motorway around that point of the trip to avoid the chronic congestion). You really should hike Springbrook some time.
@@walkaboutwithrob Well, I go there weekly, because it's that great. I was going to suggest perhaps Purlingbrook Falls first, then Twin Falls (4 km each), but knowing the kinds of walks you do, maybe one along the roads would be more your thing. Lyrebird Ridge Road, for sure. All lined with forests. Got to be loads of local history up there. One thing: if you didn't like the lack of footpaths in Dalby, you'd find wandering between each settlement challenging!
Quite a bit of my old bike commute to Southport. I used to ride from Jindalee to South Brisbane, get on the train to Helensvale, then ride that pathway along the Gold Coast highway to Southport.
Oh 2 year ago I went to Brisbane with two friends and we all got split up and I was stuck at South port my friend ended up paying for a plane, but if I knew that the beach was at South port I could of just walked along the beach back to Tweed and hitched a ride back to coffs, my city navigation skills are low, only if I seen these vid before hand ,
A train ride back to Brissie must have been a restful relief after so many clicks on your feet. What decade are you in, may I ask. I feel your pain. Southeast Queensland seems to never slow down in terms of the development. Bit of a shame but when you're in your sixties the change is all the more obvious. Cheers!
@rooshooter Fortunately, I had a friend who picked me up and drove me home after my long journey. Such a kind thing to do. Even during covid development continued seemingly unabated. Oh and I recently turned 50.
Enjoyed the vid, Beenleigh my new home, massive walking journey. There is an app called “Map My Walk”. This will map your walks from start to finish. Would love to see your exact trekk and it also maps your duration too. Thanks Rob keep em coming.
@Queensland Emergency Vehicle Turnouts thanks. The Gold Coast Highway is a rather dull stretch of road and the ambulance was the most interesting vehicle to go past for the entire length of it.
Mate I love your walks very much, but please you must learn to walk on the right side of the road where you can see all of the traffic coming towards you, where you walk you have no idea of what the traffic is coming behind you. take care and look forward to more of your very interesting walks.
Would like to know how did you get home and did you have a night down there. I think you inspired my partner (and my son) to extend themselves in riding 32 kms instead of just the normal 10 or so and I was thinking next time I am up at the coast I will walk the 4kms to IGA instead of hopping in the car .Your walks are very interesting snd a a sign of inspiring endurance Thank you
Broken toe or not you are very fit, to be walking everywhere. Foot fatigue, soak your feet in epsom salt and a foot massage if you can. I think you would’ve lost me way in the beginning hahaha. I walk cause I don’t drive but not that far good on you.

I really enjoy these. Thanks Rob. I have relatives in this walk area from the 1860's till present so it rings home to me.

@Bike-dl3cm thank you so much! Yes there's nothing quite like that beach on the GC. Sounds like you need to make a pilgrimage back here!
Kind of vaguely remind me of Les Higgins, the bush Tuckerman who used to be on the abc, like last century
Legend.
That's about 40kms. Madness. Glad you had a good day though.
Actually it came to about 47km's. I've never been so exhausted.

Ahhh I remember the Albert river bridge,we used to always be scared in the old rickety trains in the 70,s. We loved going to Beenleigh swimming pool
[5:12] Those are taro plants (Colocasia esculenta), a pest weed in Brisbane waterways.
Mate what a solid walk I walked back to Coomera from surfers few years back never again lol 😂 😊
Wonderful video Rob, thank you for sharing, I enjoy your walks so much and hope to do a few of them myself in the future when I have more time.

Man that's a long walk, quite the accomplishment.
I did this route many times on my small cc scooter. Takes me back to the days we used to follow the old pacific highway in dads EH Holden.
Magpie's.. always say hello to Magpie's, they remember and teach their young who nice people are. You won't get swooped!!
I grew up in slacks Creek in 80's. The crossing at paradise Rd on the highway was a stop sign.
