Then the whole introduction of the 6 quirks, vestiges etc all feel like a clear way to have Izuku's journey of powerups be more interesting because hey, 6 new characters and powers and backstories and relations to OFA and more history etc. Clearly we're in it for the long haul. Then we throw hands in the war arc followed by a post-war arc that feels like it's supposed to digest all of the war arc before going to a second war arc. Timing of this is just weird.

      Kinda yeah kinda no
Hori never intended for the series to be long and it doesn't Play to his strengths as a writer
It's moreso the series has elements that either NEED more time in order to be told faithfully or are structured such that they lend themselves to longer formats
More a case of hori having a lot plan but underestimating the work load when putting pen to paper and having to actually commit

I think Horikoshi came up with the whole saving Shigaraki thing pretty late into the game. That's why All For One comes takes up so much focus. He wanted to give Shigaraki his moment while still have a 'demon lord.' defeated which unfortunately meant All For One the ancient evil became little more than a plot device with a personality shift that seemed to go from Megatron to starscream.

Even if the villains died or were killed I'd understand, but the systems of "heroes" and "villains" as they were presented in the manga prior still remain with no changes. The beating heart of the series was change and care and I didn't feel that with this ending. The more I think about it, the only thing I end up feeling is empty.

One funny thing, I remember when I was around 15 years old, I had 3 thorns impaled deep on my knee. I wend to the doctor, they just cut open a little bit to get them out. I was out of comission for an entire week, because, as the doctor put it "the body is not biologicaly made to have objects inserted into it or cut open, so it will spent all the resources, nutrients and energy to fix the cut following a surgery, no matter how small:. So imagine how stupid I thought it was that Bakugo (ignoring all other damage) had his heart explode, and then went through open heart surgery, and just stands up. I know it's a shonen, but come on.

Guys, I have started a new fan story based on MHA where the reader themselves is the protagonist. There are currently 3 chapters, and I hope you all like it. Each chapter is pretty long and takes atleast 15 minutes to read completely. I assure you there are no stupid plotholes which make you feel awkward or cringed out. I just am trying to fix MHA myself while bending the story and adding some more plots to it, while focusing on the reader still being the protagonist.

I think the potential misogyny aspect of miruko’s injuries is just how severe and how many she gets while other characters go through equal or worse physical trauma (hawks, nagant, torino, bakugou) and almost perfectly heal from it with the worst of it being some cool scars

    • @TheAzulmagia

I don't know if I'd say it's misogynistic that she gets scars when Ochako, Jiro, and Mt. Lady are among other characters who recover without significant injury. I will say that the continued limb rending for Mirko did come across as weirdly fetishistic, though. I remember there being a lot of discussion about whether Hori was into ryona when those chapters were current.

Bakugou's revival gets even worse when you realise that Edgeshot didn't need to do anything. Best Jeanist is right there! He can control fibres, why didn't he use his Quirk to stitch Bakugou's wounds with fibres? Then the magical sweat drop can do its thing and jump start his heart.

    • @ignightroad
      @ignightroad 3 месяца назад +4

While I don’t like the Bakugo revivial, Edgeshot did more than just “stitch wounds”. He was acting as a pacemaker on top of that. Regardless, it felt ridiculous. It didn’t really feel like there was enough build up that reviving a dead person was even in Edgeshots repertoire of abilities. I never really took that as being a capability of foldabody. But I guess it can be left up to interpretation of his quirk based on the “I just fiddled with his insides” line after taking out Kurogiri in chapter 88. Either way, it felt a little contrived. Atleast Hori did give Bakugo some awesome moments after bringing him back.

I think it's pretty disappointing that Deku started this series as a Quirkless boy that wanted to become a hero like All Might so he could save others and have a reassuring presence, while also juggling the issue of having too much hero worship for All Might while also having a lot of internalized self-hatred. But then he just never actually learned how to be the type of hero he admired All Might for. The dialogue from one of the final battles outright says that he still thinks of himself as a loser without OFA and that's never addressed. Deku never has to reevaluate his self-worth or overcome any internal flaws that hold him back from his full potential. Just get in the bath, stinky, and let's wrap this series up.

He just couldn't pick a lane when it came to his potrayal of Hero Society and the way it should be resolved, and so we have the build-up and plot-points that show its faults and shortcomings, and the way it contributes in the creation of its own villains, but all of that ends up amounting to NOTHING because the heroes just "win" by killing all the villains and we are supposed to believe everything is fixed now. And all of the previous nuance and complexity is just... lost like that.
It truly feels like Horikoshi got cold feet after My Villain Academia arc (easily one of the bests arcs on the manga), and just decided to backtrack and make MHA the typical Superhero story.

@@dolphinpower1107no like theres some stuff he says is good that i agree with, and theres stuff he says is bad that i agree with, but mostly i just disagree with a lot of the smaller nitpicks, in which he makes like hundreds. It was just a little annoying to watch him repeatedly make side point that made me go "w... what?? Theres completely valid explinations for this huh?"
^For example, he says its bad writting that there arent central characters that dislike endevor/or dont like him anymore after dabis dance. Meanwhile 1. Endevor admited to what he'd done, apologized, then he said AND proved that he is attoning. 2. His family has forgiven him for what he did, 3. That stuff was like, over 10 years ago 4. Literally anyone who has talked to endevor would realize he's not like this anymore and that he's become a better person. And 5. The wind guy not hating endevor anymore makes PERFECT SENSE, because the REASON he said he hated him was because of that "look in his eyes" (because of endevors deep seeded hatred and lack of kindness), endevor doesnt have that anymore and is like, kinda a softie, so if the wind guy saw legit anything about endevor, or endevor himself, anytime recently, it makes 100% sense he wouldnt hste him anymore because the reason he hates him is gone.
Why would you expect characters to not see this? If you still disagree, look at ALL mha fans, theres like almost nobody who doesnt forgive endeavor, thats because anyone who knows all the information about his situation and has any shred of empathy would not see him as a bad person. For a real life example look at kendrick lamar, wether the allegations are true or not, when people saw that his family had no ill will against him, even IF he did beat them at one point, we know he and his family moved on and he became a better person. I personally have never seen someone who wont forgive kendrick, or someone who didnt forgive endeavor for what he's done, so why does this guy expect the characters to feel that way, characters who should know endeavor and understand what hes like now compared to before. Thats just, kinda dumb ngl.
^and see look at that. It took THAT long to respond to one of this guys points he made in 10 seconds in a 4 hour video. I have like 50 more of these in the chamber. Its not that i find everything he says to be wrong, its just that he makes TONS of points like this that I disagree with.
But yea i pretty much agree with what he said about the toga stuff lol, i think it mightve hit a little bit harder for me though since im pretty sure im more emotionally invested in these characters than he seems to be.
And yea, i do think toga dying is stupid and dumb, but at least it felt pretty emotional to see her chose to sacrifice herself for someone she loved instead of killing someone she loved, and to see her die happy and on her own terms. So i dont like it, but I also dont COMPLETELY hate it.

@rustedcrabtm6438 i can agree with what you said here, but its admittedly pretty boring lol no other reason than that.
It's much more entertaining to see the interpersonal drama unfold. Especially since Endeavor as a character is so closed off to anybody OTHER than his family, except maybe hawks.
Like, his bond with the sidekicks are practically nonexistent, so shaking up the pot would make them more interesting within the story.
And as for wind guy, i don't really care about him, he's just a nothing burger of a character.

honestly, My Hero Academia as a whole to me is simply one big great idea that was executed poorly. a futuristic world where superpowers are so normal that growing up without one gets you marginalized like you're a lesser race, where Hero is a real profession that literally shaped society as a whole but is secretly corrupt from the inside, and a main villain who's lived hundreds of years and whose power lets him steal any power he wants? fucking gold! incredible ideas! going to school to get a hero license? it would be so cool to see what the curriculum would be. two more main villains (Shigaraki and Dabi) who are only villains directly thanks to how Hero society failed them? incredible. this story could have been so good, all of the potential was there, and to me as a whole Horikoshi just wholly fumbled the execution on almost every single one of his great ideas.
dont get me wrong, i love this show. it was the first anime i ever watched, i consume tons of fanfiction for it as well as write my own and its really dear to my heart, but you cant deny that Hori fumbled, big time.
(here's where the EDIT starts because i refuse to read the manga because of how trash it had already become and so was using this video to recap myself on the ending. the first half of this comment was written halfway through the video, when i was calm and just a little disappointed. the second half of this comment was written after i finished the video, and now im pissed. really, really pissed.)
look at a show like attack on titan, another series with a questionable ending. maybe you think it was an absolute dogshit retcon, maybe you think it wasn't so bad, but the least you have to say is at least it feels like Isayama was trying to make something good. it is really hard to end a legendary shounen series that lasted years in a way thats super cohesive when there is so much to tie up. the AOT ending felt weird and somewhat disjointed to me, but i wasnt offended by it the way i feel just honest to god disrespected by horikoshi's shit ending. it feels like the man could not care less about the integrity of his plot or his characters. "i do everything with respect for the world of MHA"? what a fucking joke, man. at least try to make something you can be proud of. it shouldn't even be debatable how disgustingly bad the cast of characters were treated, retconned and thrown away into oblivion. im left to wonder what the point of it was. what does horikoshi think he's getting across as the message of the series with the ending he wrote. i could write an ending better than that. jesus christ people HAVE written endings better than that for MHA. archiveofourown.org/works/14572500/chapters/33674223 literally here. here's an example. read it, or dont. its good. words dont describe how disappointed i am in horikoshi and how upset i am at the way one of my favorite shows of all time got slaughtered.

The enitre LoV became villains because hero society failed them.
Shigi and Dabi are the most obvious, but iirc Conpress's family was basically Robin Hood, stealing from the rich to gice to the poor. Toga sought help with her tendencies but instead of helping her coexist and managing her urges (which could be as easily managed as teaching her self-discipline to only take a safe amount of blood regularly and teachig her consent and communication skills), Hero society instead ostracized her and make her bottle up her emotions until she couldn't anymore. Hero Hunt reveals that the government intentionally lets peole fall through the cracks and become villains, and is therefore designed to lack social safety nets, which Twice fell victim too. Spinner was the victim of racism. Mha racism is very blatantly based of irl racism. While racism is done by individual racists, racism is a systemic problem. Hero Society has shown to value heteromorphs less than other people due to them being esthetically harder to market and profit off of. Valuing certain minorities less creates racist biases and sterotypes that propagate racism.
I agree with you, I just wanted to point out the entire LoV are victims of Hero Society, not just Shigi and Dabi

Even toga's death was in my opinion good because it really made uraraka's character in the epilogue more interesting.

By the time Deku left to fight Shigaraki, Toga was over her crush on Deku, yet for some reason, Ochako had to bring up that she also had a crush on him. It's boring that her whole development revolves around Deku. I also want to add that Toga's death wasn't necessary. She could have lived and been taken by the police for questioning. After some rehabilitation, Toga could have worked with Ochako to improve Quirk counseling.

When deku accepted the charity cuck ironman suit, not only did it undermine the "losing the power" ending, it also undermines the "respectable teacher" ending. It indirectly implied that being a teacher is not enough. You still can't make a difference in this world if you are quirkless.
Also, making the class 1-a be too busy from hero work to hang out implies that villain activity is still rampant and the ofa vs afo stuff barely changed the status quo. What a payoff for "this is a story how I/we became the greatest hero". Stain has more effect in the society than deku.

I just thought about it as you were talking about all might, but it would have been so nice to see his character arc being that of a man who thought he could carry society on his back, without ever really challenging the status quo, to that of man who understands that the systems in society are the ones who should be protecting the people, like imagine after losing OFA, somewhere along the line all might has to grapple with the idea that his entire lifes effort was a waste, just being a bandaid and keeping the status quo, when what he should have been doing was changing the society that fails the villains, this would have made the dynamic between him and deku so interesting, like imagine a world where the last theme of my hero academia, is how All Might was able to improve japanese society, not as a hero, but as a quirkless activist/politician etc. The contrast of that with how deku desperately wanted a quirk, when what society needs was a change to its systems, and all that can be done without a quirk. It really would have elevated all might's character, the mentor seeing his pupil potentially waste his life the same way he did, but i do wonder, even if horikoshi had the time to actually make a ending that wasn't rushed, would he have really actually have critiqued even a little bit of modern day capitalist society, i really doubt it.

Huge props for completing the whole retrospective from start to finished. I too had to trudge along with the manga until the beginning of the final arc, which in hindsight was way too late to drop it. Though the apathy of seeing continual disappointments from villain hunt onwards was still there.

decided to rewatch, and that ending kinda hit me, you talked about the fandom so much in the video, and on my first watch, i kinda... dismissed it??? "oh haha toxic anime fans", but it really wasn't that.
i started watching you like, a year and something ago (and joined some streams :3), you and oceaniz made me appreciate MHA more, and also made me more critical of certain aspects of it, however, my engagement with it basically ended there, I only discussed MHA with close friends, at most, as i was not someone in the fandom, or a twitter user, for that matter.
i really didn't know that MHA got you to where you are right now, friend group, youtube inspiration, etc, and while theres some stuff to love about that, it really must have sucked to have your passion for a story die like that, and to add to it, the toxic positivity it created in act 3, the way the fandom just didn't accept any critizism, and attacked people (like you, or) close to you for being critical of the series.
it kinda gave me a new perspective on it, its different to watch something and to be dissapointed by it; "oh haha that game of thrones thing ended badly, whatever!" and just move on, to the way you experienced it so closely.
like many others, great video, and i really hope whatever this shitshow was, it gave you something decent out of it, good luck on your next projects, and have a good one man

I love to come into a video thinking I know all the criticisms and still getting blindsided by obvious right hooks of Fridge Logic that I didn't see all this time. Himiko pulling Deku through the portal really does make zero sense when he has (at minimum) Full Cowling on plus Air Force, Fa Jin, & Black Whip at his disposal, as does leaving Kurogiri at Central Hospital instead of moving him to, say, one of Japan's other islands? Doesn't even need to be much, just have Cementoss build a concrete bunker for him before sending him onto the Coffin.
And to think swaths of the entire fandom became unable to open their senses to differences of opinions... Truly thankful to have not experienced that darkness first-hand purely by life circumstance. My heart goes out to everyone who suffered through that kind of dogmatic insanity.
I'll probably never get the good of early MHA out of my head, which makes it all the more important to come to know it as a whole; to love blindly is a fool's errand that can only lead to falling on one's face. I always knew I'd finish the series to conclusion as I have with other long-running series, but making the last leg of this journey alongside Asa really has made so much of a positive difference in the experience compared to others.
Go take a long rest and get your head on straight, Horikoshi; keep on doing good work, Asaratha. Thank you both, as well as to all the contributors for this powerful retrospective; wishing better things for each of you in the future!

Interaction among character is lacking a lot, no way they lost contact for a years if they actually care with each other and always in good terms, like koichi still sending popstep a photo to show he is okay, why hori forbid deku and uraraka the same treatment at least?
Also maybe instead showing deku save a kid from tripping make something like spiderman 2 when peter lost his power, it better to proof a point that deku body still moving on his own rather something that every normal people would do.
Isnt he still hero with license? he can still helping people legally, it make him look like chicken out because he doesnt have op quirk anymore.

I am convinced that MHA is just a stealth prequel to The Boys. The ending pretty much confirmed that Heroes are still treated like celebrities. The world of The Boys takes it to a whole other level, having the Seven be in movies, action figures, and it wouldn't surprise me if they had comic books of romanticized version of themselves.

43 minutes in and there's one argument that I somewhat disagree with. The argument regarding tbe female characters who get destroyed and mutiliated compares to their male contemparies would naturally deserve some form if acknowledgement to be distinguished from male characters. I argue this because when you compare the occasions which the strongest amidst the female cast get to participate in high stakes fights to their male counterparts, a handful of the women get the short end of the stick in some fashion.
    - Mirko gets more heavily mutilated than any character in the series during what was essentially her debut fight, and all she did was toss her weight around the same way a male character would. Whereas someone like Aizawa lost his leg essentially on his own terms to avoid the loss of his quirk.
    - Star dies in her introductory battle as the strongest woman in the world and one of the strongest characters in the story.
    - Midnight dies after failing to contribute anything to the Machia battle while Kamui Woods got burned alive and seemed to get along just fine despite being made of wood
    - Ochako nearly bleeds to death from a single stab wound, while Bakugo survived numerous impalements
    - Even a non-combatant like Rei had to suffer permanent burns just to contribute an arguably substantial role to the story
And obviously, male characters get their own fair share of brutalization and mutilation here and there. But it feels disproportionate when female characters contribute less often to higher stakes encounters and are made to suffer worse fates on average compared to male characters who are more abundant and have more opportunities to experience different outcomes in battle.
I don't think it points towards Hori as a misogynist, but I would argue that it understandably would leave a bad taste in the mouths of those who would enjoy female characters participating in the same power fantasy as male characters with no strings attached. I dont think there is really a female character in MHA who achieves that

The way that Mirko’s mutilation in particular is framed in the manga also comes across as weirdly sexually charged. Like do we have to see her crotch as she is being maimed? As she is on the ground bleeding out? Was that really necessary?

Comparing Ochako's stabwound to Bakugo's impalment and later his entire body being smashed to peices is not really fair because bakugo is clearly just built different, okay now the real reason is because in MHUR Ochako only has 250 base health while Bakugo has 300 so Bakugo in that fight had that extra 50 health to fall back on 😂

      @Azzie_S Месяц назад +1

I'd agree it's probably not misogyny, but I think there's still a bias against female characters. The female (barring Stars & Stripes and a few others like Nejire, Ryukyu, Momo, Mt Lady, Mirko) also tend to have fairly weaker quirks too. If you compare Ochako who needs to touch her opponent to float them compared like Shigereki or Overhaul who touching people can just straight up destroy them. Ochako's fights against Toga might as well be two regular women fighting which is a bit absurd when you consider the kind of battles going on around the same time.
A lot of the female character quirks seem to be disproportionately weak compared to their limitations or very support/scouting focused. And most of the stronger villains are either very durable or regenerate get defeated by one big attack. Something that almost none of the female character's quirks are capable of outside beating generic goons.

Im just barely an hour into this but i literally screamed at 1:02:11 when you mentioned tokoyami's comment on chihiro's ass. When i caught up on season 7, I recorded a whole breakdown of how MHA's humor has been weirdly misplaced and its characterizations butchered in later arcs and this specific scene was one of the largest ones at the heart of it!! I mean, I could understand Mineta or Denki saying something like this but Tokoyami usually carries himself with more respect and restraint so when I heard this, it made me ao incredibly sad. It made me realize how much each characters' individual voices and dynamics had been neutered when that was one of the main things I admired about the series to start with (as the creator of my own comic with a huge cast).
That said, I definitely had second thoughts about whether or not I was being too hard on this scene. But hearing it brought up here genuinely made me SO happy that i had to take a lap around the house and come leave this comment 🥲

Hori sees the problem with Hero society, shows us how society has failed these people, and has society literally collapse due to its unsustainability, proving the villains correct.
Then he literally dumbs down all the villains (with except of twice, dabi, and toga) and kills them all off (except dabi). Then he turns around and puts all the blame on individuals for not pulling themselves up by their bootstraps. Acts like these critical flaws with society, which made it unsustainable and literally made it collaspe, is actually the fault of individuals, and the current status quo is great and the system itself could do no wrong.
The quirk counseling, designed to cure undesirables and make them fall in line, gets "expanded." I saw parallels between quirk counseling and Canada's residential schools, which were designed to "kill the Indian in the child," and worked to take ingenious children and forcefully strip them of their culture, history, any undesirable aspects of them to make them fall in line with white society. Both took people who fell outside of the government's opinion on what was okay and tried to cure those aspects instead of co-existing with them.
He specifically wrote about how the current government literally designed society to have it fail people and turn them into criminals in order to profit off them. His solution to this is to reward this corruption by putting the equivalent of a black site cia agent as its leader.
Not only does he try to completely invalidate the villain's ideas by putting all the blame on them and act like the status quo could do no wrong, but by doing so, he unintentionally proves the villains right. His ending is supposed to be a happy ending with everything getting better, but if you don't take his word for it and critically abalize it yourself, you'd see that killing the villains and discrediting them didn't change anything. All Might concept is an explicit critique of this idea, and the story disproves it by having society become disillusioned and collapsing as soon as the government's narrative is disproven. Yet Hori's ending seems to be in support of All Might's idealogy, reverting society back to what it was like under All Might and treating it as a happy ending after he spent years dissecting and critique every aspect of it. By trying to discredit them Hori accidently proves them completely correct. By writing what he thought was the solution to all the problems within society and what he imagined an ideal happy ending would be, he unintentional proved the villains correct, justified, and in the right, making this a dark ending.
I generally don't hate anyone (except for billionaires and their allies), but i feel genuine resentment towards Hori. Like he looked at the problems around him, and instead of looking deeper at his own work he instead spits in the face of everything I thought he stood for and blames it on the outsiders, saying it's their fault they suffered. I never thought I would feel this way over a piece of fiction, but I guess that only shows how invested I was with this world and how betrayed I feel by Hori's ideology.

Been patiently waiting for this video for so long and what an amazing conclusion to the MHA retrospective. Perfectly explains my issues with MHA's writing post-Act 3, the state of the MHA fanbase, Hori's declining health as well as the anime and with the cameos it's clear that a ton of love and passion was put into this video.
For me personally I'vealways had my opinions on MHA from time to time, and although they're not very positive, MHA still holds a special place in my heart. I loved the characters, the story, the worldbuilding, etc, and even though they were left underwhelming as Act 3 went on, I was still heavily invested in the story. My criticisms towards MHA come from a place of love (despite what MHAtwt likes to believe) because surprise surprise I cared about the story and writing. I think you, Oceaniz, and many, MANY others have gotten me to look into MHA on a much deeper level.
I might just be some random subscriber, but seriously. Thank you so much for sticking with MHA to the very end. And to leave off some corny line "Don't cry because MHA's over. Smile because it happened."
Thank you once again for making these MHA videos, streams, retrospectives, etc. It may be the last time you'll cover MHA, but I'm DEFINITELY not going away anytime soon, whether it's Re:Zero or Kagurabachi (which I just recently caught up to), I'll stick around and see what more you can offer!❤

I'm gonna leave this comment here, saying that I cannot wait for the inevitable historical revisionism that will happen towards this section of the series when the anime adapts it. It has been really interesting seeing the narrative about certain choices in the story change as they get animated. Over night the most hated and criticized aspects of the manga get turned into some of the most beloved moments of all time. I guess it's just a symptom of the only people still watching MHA being diehard fans (and I include myself in that group despite my criticisms of the manga and the anime). I expect by the time the anime adapts the ending of the manga most people will say it's peak fiction, not only forgetting what it was like at the time, but pretending it was never even considered bad by some people in the first place.

With that said, I hope everyone enjoyed the My Hero Academia run time, despite it's low damps and high peaks it was an unforgettable experience.
    C'est fini.

Asa, I wanted to thank you for this series, as it, & several of your other videos, have been insanely helpful with the act 3 rewrite & I honestly don't think I'd have even half the ideas I've got if not for your videos analysing this series. I'll be sure to thank you, Oceaniz, & everyone else that has helped in the actual videos when they come out.

Is this a rewrite that is posted publicly or just a private for fun kinda thing?
If so I would like to read.

    IT'S HEREEEEEEEE
Would it be weird to edit and add my thoughts as I go through lol?
    - 5:33 hurts to hear that and while i was just a lurker i remember seeing those moments and getting weirded out by them. It's fine to have criticisms towards your fav series and it shouldn't be *one side vs the other.
8:45 it really could've given us some of the best Deku moments too... but stopped just before we got some actually intersection from him..
11:34 would've been so interesting! Especially with the Endeavor we have now who is trying to be good.
Like what emotions would he show? How would he deal with that and the public shaming him for his family abuse at the same time? With trying to track afo down as well! Just a lot that could be expanded upon that we didn't get...
14:35 valid. That's something i feel with a lot of the moments in act 3.
    15:03 haha......
16:21 just such a weird thing. Seeing people excuse it while it would've been perfect for his plan.
Also knowing about shiggy's quirk and that theory thanks to the ending it MAKES EVEN LESS SENSE??
Even just to give to nomu's or anything would've been good especially since Chisaki literally can't use it anymore.
