I had to do a double take because that meant that Mumbo Jumbo rewired his muscle memory to shift with his pinky. Somehow his thumb is mentally linked to crouching and his pinky for sprinting.

Honestly feels like hytale could genuinely have a shot at competing with minecraft. Lower barrier of entry (minecraft has gotten quite complex over the years), enough differences and improvements in building combat and the world that it's inspired by minecraft rather than a copy plus exposure and positive reviews by the hermits. Let's hope the des just keep doing what they are doing cause it works and don't crash this thing

@sewi014I think what will happen is people who have played Minecraft for a while will gradually move to Hytale, while younger audiences will probably play Minecraft first.

Hey Mumbo, in the settings you can enable ennemies health bars, it's really useful to be able to gauge if an enemy is even remotely killable with your current gear, since Hytale has a much steeper difficulty increase than Minecraft.

I wouldn't use the word competitor. I don't think it's accurate to the concept of video games. For example if you had two car companies competing against each other; each individual would pick their car from one or the other, losing potential sales for the other company. But with video games. The same people aquire multiple. I guarantee you most Hytalians play Minecraft and vice-versa. Now, I suppose one could say they're competing for play time, but neither company makes profit based on play time. So it truthfully doesn't matter. (No one uses the marketplace anyway)
Now overall I do think it's a good thing that we have multiple games now, so if Minecraft does something that is bad, I have a second favorite to go to. And Hytalians can go to their second favorite if Hytale does something bad. But I don't know if I'd call that competition. Aside from game sales.
I suppose you could say the merch is competing against each other, that's fair.

I feel it needs to be said how locked in Mumbo is during his gameplay. Most youtubers and streamers become infants when playing an unfamiliar game, missing every cue and misunderstanding everything, but this man just doesnt skip a beat, impressive

From a game design perspective, they blend into the UI. I didn't notice them until several hours in. Could definitely do with something to make them stand out, or at least a small tutorial popup that's like "Look here!"

So quick recap for Mumbo and those not in the know: This is a very early access. The game was in development hell for a long time after being acquired by Riot in 2020. Essentially they wanted to redo the entire game and its engine so it can launch on all platforms. This took so long they eventually abandoned the whole project. The previous owner then bought back his game and now released it to finally give the fans who waited patiently their game even if its very unfinished. The way sales have been going it appears active development can be funded for years to come. We can expect regular updates.
Since you seem to know a bit about the game and I’ve never heard of it before this video, is there actually that much unique content? It just looks like a Minecraft clone and I’m not really seeing anything that makes it stand out.
+ even before the release, the owners of the game said they would commit to chip in with their personal funds (which basically come from the Hypixel Minecraft server) to continue developing Hytale for at least 10 years to come, even if initial sales weren't looking good.

@ChilliCheezus atm not much yet since it is at its earliest stage but there is that adventure mode with actual story and lore so maybe check back when it drops. If you've played Terraria, it's more like that than it is Minecraft when it comes to the vision of the game.
@ChilliCheezus the game will move further away from minecraft the more it gets updated. The survival mode that they have wasn't even originally planned but they made it quickly to give the fans something to play after hell for 7 years

I am honestly shocked by how mumbo is kinda good at fighting and has progressed farther than most of the other hermit in terms of progression tree.
The other hermits got sidetracked with exploring.
Mumbo locked in and got his basics taken care of first. Also, I think he lucked out a bit with an abandoned mine spawning nearby.
I really hope to see Mumbo return to this game. It feels like it does a much better job suiting how he prefers to play. Once this game has some sort of tech system, official or modded, I think we can definitely expect to see him back!

For future cuz it took me forever to figure it out. You can rotate blocks with R. Also there is a setting where you can turn on block placement outline so you know what the stuff your setting down will look like. Just set that to ALL and it'll work with half slabs and stuff
Near the end he had figured it out.
The bear fight is a great contrast with Etho's XD IT's also SO REFRESHING to see someone ACTUALLY READ TOOLTIPS and not just wander around and ask "How do I get leather chat, I don't understand!!!"

It's weird seeing Mumbo semi-competent in combat. It's like Hytale designed combat as part of the game allowing him to slowly get good at it, while combat in Minecraft seems like a distant afterthought and is so dead simple that people can just get away with being bad at it
I have never really enjoyed combat in Minecraft, and I hate to say it but it just brings any fun I have to a grinding halt. At least before the weapon cooldown you could take out mobs at a decent rate but nowadays it's just aggravating
@fartgarfunkeljr personally after playing Bedrock, Java looks much more fun in combat. How did they downgrade.
@fartgarfunkeljr Yeah, me saying Minecraft combat was simple and people can get away with being bad at it didn't necessarily mean it's fun. Plenty of people just cheese combat in some way, either through boats, lava buckets, pillaring up to whack them out their reach, walling them off and hitting their ankles, or other safe and non-direct ways, none of which feels satisfying, to me at least. But even if you go toe to toe with some of the harder mobs without the cheese, it just doesn't feel like a good time even when you know how to handle them, since you can end up draining way more your own resources to do it than if you just cheesed them. And for what? Because that's the other thing, if you don't need something that drops from the mob, there is little point in engaging them. And most mobs in Minecraft have the problem where they only drop unique things that are only used in esoteric recipes which the player may never even use, or at least not need the quantity of the item that is obtained from incidentally farming it.
Hytale at least seems like it has generic drops that come from multiple mobs, namely leather, that is used in many things. The combat can probably be cheesed in many of the same ways it can in Minecraft, but at least you seem to be able to more than just jump->whack->backup/block->repeat for the non-cheese option, and the mobs seem to grow more gradual with difficulty as long as you avoid the noob trap ones, like an early bear, until you can more easily handle it.
Note that I haven't actually played Hytale; I'm just using observations gleaned from this video as it's the only Hytale one I've seen
@KG-Crump Java used to have the same combat Bedrock currently has (minus shields - you instead blocked with your sword to only reduce damage), but it was overhauled to the way it is now back in 1.9
aside from adding shields and removing sword blocking, the rest of those changes just never made it to Bedrock

Even unfinished, the exploration in this game is so great. They really did an insane job with the world generation. TWICE I've found myself randomly having to take cover in a cave only to find crazy stuff. First time was this giant goblin arena with mountains of gold. And the other time was this beautiful spiral underground tree formation. In just RANDOM caves.
And it all also flows into one another so fluidly. There are exceptions, but generally these structures don't feel sprinkled at all and more like they're connected to their surroundings.
ohhhh the world gen is gunna get even better once WorldGenV2 drops.

I recently had a cave expedition where I went from right next to spawn all the way to several hundred blocks into the desert. I was so rich afterwards. I love it.
The hammer tool lets you adjust the block state in the world instead of needing to break it and put it back in the builder's workbench.

Don't judge Mumbo too much. I remember him winning a survival games tournament, where he threw his weapon in the final battle. This baffled his opponent so much, that he just didn't know what to do, and Mumbo won.
