Johnny you’ve done a really god job with paintwork and blacking; your boat looked as good as new especially the scene where the crane was just lowering it in to the water.Atb Simon
Great series of videos Johny and an honest account of all the work done. I still panicked watching your home swinging about like that and I wasn’t even there. !!!. Take care.
Well Johnny. Found your vlogs about three weeks ago and started to watch from very beginning. So now it time to leave my first comment. What I like about your vlogs is that they are down to earth, interesting vlog with out all the show boating that some other blogs seem to do. I most enjoyed the vlog with the installation of the skirting board and also the paint detailing that you did before the boat yard. Plus yes the blacking of the boat really finnished the boat superbly. Look forward to your future vlogs.. Cheers Pal..
Great to have you aboard. That's a lot of videos watched, that is! As you spotted, I'm not really into "talking things up" which seems to be mandatory on tv now and finding its way into youtube etc. Best, Johny.
great little mini series Johnny ,Dera looking fantastic now a very good job very well done. Being back on the water must be great. I don't know about you but even I had a couple of squeaky bum moments when she was swinging around, looked quite close to the other boat. Now its time to enjoy all your hard work.
A great series of videos, although your freshly painted boat swinging in the breeze must have had your heart in your mouth. Looking forward to the next vids, thank you
Wow Johnny, the price you paid on the batteries seems too good to be true. I thought most Leisure batteries were close to 200 pounds a piece. The job you did on the blacking was far superior to what I've seen done by commercial outfits, your attention to detail is unparalleled. Your boat looks very nice and I do hope those batteries give you many years of trouble-free service.
Leisure batteries come in a range of prices/quality. I've had expensive ones before and been very disappointed with performance, these will doubtless disappoint as of course they are still lead acid which to my mind is a very poor technology, but at least they were priced accordingly and will be ok until I can get around to figuring out a lithium battery set up, definitely not "many years" but long enough.
She looks absolutely beautiful JL, and even better now, where she belongs in the water, you have done an exceptional job on her, and I think that makes it worth the money, happy cruising, looking forward to more adventures, stay safe and well 🚢🚢🚢
Fantastic mini series and great that you included the costs. The boats were very close together. It could have gone badly wrong if your neighbour had started jet washing and wire brushing as you were painting. I've watched lots of the other videos but never have seen you say if you work or are constant cruising. The reason I ask is because I can now take my forces pension and think I could constant cruise on the money
Yes maybe they could have different areas for different processes, it was all quite rough and ready really. I think you'll be fine on your forces pension, as long as you can afford a decent boat in the first place.
The boat looks great. Personally I didn’t think the cost was extreme with all the out goings for the boat yard. You must be very satisfied with how everything has turned out it’s been very interesting watching all the work you have done. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Have seen several boat tubers blackening jobs and all were shite and done on the cheap and quick. Except you, JL. Your NB blackening looks super. The best how-to do it right, for sure. Cheers!
I'm really surprised by the costs. I had guess that the craning and boatyard space would have cost three times as much but that blacking is eye-wateringly expensive -- never would have set that so high.
I bought four tins of course and only used three. Could have gotten away with two so potentialy could have spent just eighty quid on Blacking. The crane cost didn't surprise me.
@@ProjectNarrowboat I was judging by what I've wound up paying every time I need to hire the use of heavy equipment and a crew. Your cost was less than what I've paid for one man on a skid-steer for an hour but maybe I'm comparing kumquats to lemons. Stay warm and dry! Cheers.
The boat looks very good indeed. Well worth the money and effort spent. The consequences of not doing that sort of work can be seen in the final frames of your video. I was looking at "Beez Neez" and imagining what it would cost to bring that boat up to scratch (and it wasn't the worst around by far). It's as the old expression goes: "You can pay me now, or pay me later." The unavoidable costs in life are death, taxes, and the cost of a refit from time to time.
Really enjoyed this series of videos, specially as our boat has been in for blacking at the same time. I hope they did as good a job of blacking ours as you did on yours... but I very much doubt it 🙂
Enjoying your videos. I did my blacking at that yard a few years back, so good to see they are still fairly unhelpful. 3 locks is supposed to be closed Jan to 18th March and I want to go through in March, what's it looking like there please? Thanks!!
@@ProjectNarrowboat Great, hope you've got some of the journey recorded 👍 CRT works programme confused me because it stated navigation was closed from 4th January! I've had a go at them over it!!
Johnny, I’m not a narrowboater, but thoroughly enjoy your videos. You worked damn hard for two weeks and the boat looks terrific, but I have 2 questions…… Why doesn’t the bottom of the hull get blackened, surely rust and pitting can take place underneath??……. And you listed your costs, but what would the estimated costs have been for all the work, if you had taken the boat to a marina/boatyard for the “professionals” to do all that you did??
Apparently the base plate doesn't fare too badly as being that far down in the water there is not so much oxygen. That's one school of though anyway. Tbh it would have killed me trying to do that as well. As for costs, well there would have been the labour charge for the blacking, which varies but prolly around £300+, plus labour on the other jobs - battery fitting, tunnel flash, blacking locker bases, it would have added up to a fair bit.
It varies quite a lot depending on where in the country, but the difference would be in the labour. Obviously, I did so much more than just the blacking and also to my own satisfaction, so very difficult to say really, but ££££'s.
The boat looks beautiful, Johnny. Money well-spent on a job well done. Question: was the last shot taken from atop the boat while the crane was lowering it? - Leigh
Thanks for this series; it was very well filmed and edited. Did you play the guitar at the beginning? I was grateful for the cost breakdown too. Worth every penny knowing it was done to such a high standard.
hi johnny london, enjoyed the vlog thanks,i`m after new batteries for my nb and wondering if you are happy with your new batteries? they seem very cheap, can you send me a link please
Cracking job mate. We paid £550 to get our boat blacked. It’s nowhere near the quality you have achieved though. Well done. Great Vlog. One question on the batteries. Did you consider the carbon lead acid batteries at all? I’ve been reading up on them and they appear to address many of the issues for CC’ers of being unable to get full charging over winter periods.
£550 sounds like a bargain! I've heard of carbon l/a, and really it was an opportunity to do something better than normal l/a but I had my hands so full I just wanted something "for now." Ideally I want to fit lithium, which will involve placing the batteries and all the wiring elsewhere - so quite a big job. Something for the future.
An ouch amount of money the point is you had enough time to achieve all your objectives no great urgency at making sure the job was done right. Watching all the series on what you have done you did it very well having the boat yard do it then not to the same standard slap it on no attention to detail Ka-ching Ka-ching for a boat yard is the order of the day. It certainly was hard work.
Glad to see you cruising again. Your attention to detail and hard work has paid off, she looks beautiful. A job well done! x

Grand job Johnny - boat looks fantastic !......Now to enjoy a bit of cruising .....take care and stay safe and well ...
Exactly - enjoy it for a bit now all the work is done.
That's a lot of money, but it was actually less than I was expecting. Your boat looks astounding!
I felt the costs were okay, but if I'd had labour on top it would have been rather a lot.

The crane operators seemed careful, there's quite an art to lifting 20 tons of long thin steel in a confined space. Glad it is all done though.
Excellent mini series johnny 👍really enjoyed that!!! Great to see you back on the cut out and about, keep her going 👍
Hopefully just a few small jobs to do as and when for a bit.
Great series of boatyard DIY projects, we have really enjoyed these daily vlogs!! Nerve wracking to see your voat swinging away.... crikey!! Xx
Good to be back in the water safe and sound!
A job really well done and great weather to.
Don't worry about scrathing the boat that, feeling will soon wear off!
The banks seem more badly maintain than usual - lots of bent armco sticking out etc, but I'm doing my best.
Your boat looks fantastic. Love how you had a camera on the boat while it was being put back in.
I just set it and hoped!
Great job Johnny. Very lucky with the weather.
I heard that!
Blimey that certainly was swinging about a bit!
20 tons of steel in the wind!

Yes and the longer you leave it the worse it gets - there were no issues at all to deal with and it is totally protected for another 2-3 years.

The boat looks great. It's a lot of money but given the amount that you had to do, perhaps no so bad.
Hopefully that's it for a year or two now though I do have a few other jobs on the horizon.

In what way? I've never had any problems. I guess it depends where though, there are a couple places I keep hearing about.
How long will it last before she will need to come out again
2-3 years. Prolly do the anodes next time as well.

No - I left it for the next needy boater.

That was a bit from when the boat was being craned out actually - I completely forgot I had it so it fitted just nice behind the costings.

hi johnny london, enjoyed the vlog thanks,i`m after new batteries for my nb and wondering if you are happy with your new batteries? they seem very cheap, can you send me a link please
Tayna batteries on eBay, but they're nothing special , just a stop gap to some lithiums. If you intend sticking with lead acids you could do better.
Do you not have to black the bottom of the boat?
Most just choose to ignore it as it is hard to get to and apparently lower oxygen content in the water down there so not too bad.
Johnny, I’ve just noticed how many solar panels you have; how many Watts worth do you have on the roof there ?
In total 1140w. It's more about still getting something on a bad day than it is peak power though.
